The car door opened with a sharp sound that cut through the tense night air.
Ariana stepped out slowly.
Alone.
The cold wind brushed against her face, but she didn't flinch. Her expression was calm—too calm for someone surrounded by armed men. Behind her, inside the car, her daughter had started crying softly, frightened by the sudden chaos. Adrian's hand tightened around his gun, his entire body on edge, ready to react at the slightest wrong move.
"Ariana, get back in the car," he said, his voice low but firm.
She didn't move.
Instead, she took another step forward.
"You want the girl?" she said, her voice clear and steady despite everything. "Then come through me first."
The men surrounding them paused for a moment, exchanging glances. They hadn't expected this. Fear? Yes. Panic? Maybe. But not this kind of defiance.
One of them stepped forward, clearly the leader of the group. His face was partially hidden in the shadows, but his voice carried authority.
"You're making this harder than it needs to be," he said. "Hand over the child, and you walk away."
Ariana let out a quiet, humorless laugh.
"Walk away?" she repeated. "You think I'll ever trust that?"
The man didn't answer.
Because there was no answer that would make that lie believable.
Behind her, Adrian slowly stepped out of the car as well, positioning himself just slightly behind Ariana—but close enough to pull her back if needed, close enough to shoot if it came to that.
"This is your last warning," Adrian said coldly. "Leave. Now."
The man's attention shifted to him, and for a brief second, something like recognition flickered in his eyes.
"So you're the famous Adrian," he said. "I expected someone… less emotional."
Adrian's gaze turned lethal.
"You don't get to speak about emotions," he said. "Not after what you've done."
The man smirked faintly.
"We don't deal in emotions," he replied. "We deal in value."
His eyes moved past them—
To the car.
To the child inside.
Ariana noticed it instantly.
And she moved.
Just a single step—
But enough to block his line of sight completely.
"You're not touching her," she said.
This time, her voice wasn't just calm.
It was dangerous.
The man exhaled slowly, clearly losing patience.
"Take them," he ordered.
Everything happened at once.
The men moved forward.
Guns raised.
Adrian reacted instantly—pulling Ariana slightly back as he fired the first shot.
BANG!
One man dropped.
Chaos erupted again.
Gunfire echoed through the night, bullets slicing through the air as Adrian moved with precision, taking cover behind the car while returning fire. Ariana didn't freeze this time. She moved quickly to the other side, opening the back door and shielding her daughter with her own body.
"It's okay," she whispered urgently. "Stay down, don't move, no matter what happens."
The little girl nodded weakly, tears streaming down her face but trusting her completely.
Another shot rang out.
Closer this time.
Ariana flinched as a bullet hit the side of the car, metal denting loudly.
They were getting closer.
Too close.
Adrian cursed under his breath, realizing they were being surrounded. Even with his skills, there were too many of them.
This wasn't a fight they could win head-on.
"Ariana!" he called out. "We need to move!"
She looked around quickly.
River behind.
Enemies ahead.
No escape.
Unless—
Her eyes shifted slightly to the side.
The slope.
Steep. Dangerous.
But possible.
"Adrian!" she shouted. "The riverbank!"
He followed her gaze instantly.
Understood.
It was risky.
Extremely.
But it was their only chance.
"On my count," he said quickly.
Ariana nodded, tightening her hold on their daughter.
"Three… two…"
Before he could say one—
A gunshot rang out from the side.
Different angle.
Different direction.
Everyone froze for a split second.
Another shot.
Then another.
One of the attackers dropped.
Then another.
The leader turned sharply. "What the—"
From the darkness—
More figures emerged.
Armed.
But not with the syndicate.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
He recognized them.
His people.
Backup.
"They're ours," he said quickly.
Relief flashed across Ariana's face—but it was brief.
Because the fight wasn't over yet.
Gunfire intensified as both sides clashed, the night turning into a battlefield of chaos and flashing lights. Adrian took the opportunity immediately.
"Now!" he shouted.
Ariana didn't hesitate.
She held her daughter tightly and ran toward the slope.
The ground was uneven, slippery, but she didn't stop.
Adrian followed right behind her, covering them as they moved.
Shots rang out behind them—
But they kept going.
Down.
Closer to the river.
Finally—
They reached the bottom.
Breathing hard.
Alive.
For now.
Ariana dropped to her knees slightly, still holding her daughter, pressing her close as if anchoring herself to reality.
Adrian stood beside them, scanning the area, making sure no one had followed.
For a moment—
It was quiet again.
Too quiet.
Ariana looked up at him, her voice barely steady.
"Is it over…?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Because deep down—
He knew.
This wasn't the end.
Not even close.
Then—
A faint sound reached them.
A phone.
Ringing.
Ariana's phone.
She slowly pulled it out, her hands still shaking.
Unknown number.
Again.
She answered.
Silence.
Then—
A familiar voice.
Soft.
Calm.
Terrifying.
"Impressive," Adrian's mother said.
Ariana's blood ran cold.
"But running won't save you," she continued. "Because the moment you chose to keep that child…"
A pause.
Then—
"You declared war on me."
Ariana's grip on the phone tightened.
Her fear slowly faded.
Replaced by something else.
Something stronger.
She looked at her daughter.
Then at Adrian.
Then spoke—
Her voice steady.
"Then it's war."
Cliffhanger:
👉 Adrian's mother smiles on the other side and says—
"Good… because next time, I won't be taking chances." 😈
