Chapter 57 - Chapter 59: The Price of Taking Back

The phone screen lit up the darkness inside the car, casting a pale glow across Ariana's face as her eyes locked onto the message. Her heartbeat slowed for a second—not from calm, but from that dangerous kind of stillness that comes before something breaks.

"You took what belongs to us… now we take something back."

Her fingers tightened around the phone until her knuckles turned white. For a moment, she couldn't even breathe properly. It wasn't just a threat—it was a promise.

Adrian noticed immediately. "What is it?" His voice was sharp, alert, already anticipating the worst.

Ariana didn't answer right away. She just turned the phone slightly so he could see the message through the rearview mirror.

The effect was instant.

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"Damn it," he muttered under his breath, his grip on the steering wheel tightening as the car sped faster through the empty road.

Ariana's mind was already racing ahead. Take something back. That meant they had already made a move. This wasn't a warning—it was happening now.

Her gaze dropped to her daughter, still asleep against her chest, unaware of the storm circling around her. Ariana's arms instinctively tightened around her, a protective shield forming without thought.

"No one touches her again," Ariana whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Adrian heard it.

"And no one will," he said firmly. But there was tension in his voice now. Calculation. Urgency.

Because he knew—

If the syndicate had sent that message, then something else was already in motion.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

A sharp, piercing sound that cut through the silence like a blade.

Adrian glanced at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately, putting it on speaker.

"Speak."

A distorted voice came through, mechanical and cold.

"You're moving faster than expected, Mr. Adrian."

Ariana's breath stilled.

The syndicate.

Adrian's tone turned icy. "If you have something to say, say it."

A faint, almost amused chuckle echoed from the other side.

"You've taken the asset," the voice continued. "That disrupts balance."

"She's not an asset," Adrian snapped. "She's my daughter."

A pause.

Then—

"That distinction doesn't matter to us."

Ariana felt anger rise inside her, sharp and uncontrollable.

"What did you take?" she demanded suddenly, leaning forward. "What do you mean by 'take something back'?"

There was a brief silence.

As if the voice on the other side was acknowledging her presence.

"Ah… Ariana," it said. "Still as defiant as ever."

Her stomach dropped.

"You remember me," the voice added.

Ariana's fingers trembled slightly.

She didn't just remember.

She knew.

That tone. That controlled cruelty.

"You were there…" she whispered. "Back then."

Another soft chuckle.

"Very good."

Adrian's patience snapped. "Enough games. What did you take?"

This time—

The answer came without delay.

"Look behind you."

Ariana's heart stopped.

Slowly—

Too slowly—

She turned her head.

Her eyes went straight to the back window.

For a second, she saw nothing but darkness.

Then—

Headlights.

A black SUV.

Too close.

Following them.

Her breath hitched.

"Adrian…" she said, her voice tight.

"I see it," he replied instantly, his tone shifting into something deadly focused.

The voice on the phone continued, almost casually.

"You didn't think we'd let you leave that easily, did you?"

Adrian pressed harder on the accelerator. The engine roared as the car surged forward.

"Hold on," he said.

Ariana tightened her grip around her daughter, her entire body going rigid as fear and adrenaline collided inside her.

The SUV behind them sped up.

Closer.

Closer.

"They're not trying to scare us," Adrian said under his breath. "They're trying to stop us."

As if confirming his words—

The SUV swerved suddenly.

And slammed into the back of their car.

BANG!

Ariana gasped as the impact jolted them forward.

Her daughter stirred, a soft cry escaping her lips.

"It's okay," Ariana whispered quickly, holding her tighter. "I'm here… I'm here…"

Another hit.

Harder this time.

Adrian fought to keep control of the wheel, his jaw clenched, eyes sharp.

"Stay down," he said.

The phone was still on.

The voice returned, calm as ever.

"Return the girl… or lose everything."

Adrian's response was immediate.

"Come and take her."

And with that—

He hung up.

The SUV behind them accelerated again.

But this time—

A second set of headlights appeared from the side road.

Ariana's eyes widened.

"No…"

Another vehicle.

Blocking the path ahead.

A trap.

Perfectly executed.

Adrian's mind worked in seconds.

Left—blocked.

Right—too narrow.

Forward—closing.

Behind—attacking.

There was only one option.

He made the decision instantly.

"Brace yourself," he said.

Ariana tightened her hold around her daughter, lowering her body protectively over her.

"Adrian—"

He didn't answer.

He just—

Turned the wheel sharply.

The car swerved violently off the road—

Heading straight into the darkness.

The vehicle bounced harshly over uneven ground before finally skidding to a stop near an abandoned stretch by the riverside.

For a second—

Everything was silent.

Then—

Ariana's shaky breath filled the air.

"Are you okay?" Adrian asked immediately, turning back.

Ariana nodded, still holding their daughter tightly. "She's okay… I've got her…"

But the moment didn't last.

Because—

Headlights appeared again.

They followed.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Of course they did."

Ariana's heart started racing again.

There was nowhere left to run.

The car was stuck.

The river behind them.

Enemies in front.

And their daughter—

Right in the middle of it all.

Adrian reached for the gun hidden under his seat.

Checked it.

Loaded.

Ready.

Ariana looked at him.

"Adrian…" she said softly.

He met her eyes.

And for a brief moment—

Everything else disappeared.

"I'm not losing you," he said quietly.

Ariana shook her head.

"You won't," she replied.

Then her expression changed.

Cold.

Resolved.

"But this time… we don't run."

Adrian understood.

Completely.

He gave a slight nod.

"Then we fight."

Outside—

The SUV doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Armed.

Closing in.

The night grew darker.

Heavier.

Because this wasn't just survival anymore.

This—

Was war.

Cliffhanger:

👉 As the enemies surround them—

Ariana suddenly steps out of the car alone…

And says—

"You want the girl? Then come through me first." 😈
