The fall didn't kill them.
That was the first good thing that had happened in a while.
It hurt, though.
A lot.
---
Shin'ya hit the slope wrong.
Not a clean landing. Not controlled. He slid, rolled once, tried to stop it, failed, and ended up crashing shoulder-first into something that thankfully wasn't sharp enough to make things worse.
He stayed there for a second.
Then—
"I'm alive," he said.
A pause.
"…That's new."
---
A few steps away, Yuki had already stood up.
Of course she had.
She brushed dirt off her sleeve like falling down a near-cliff into unknown territory was part of her daily routine.
"You're slower," she said.
"I fell down a cliff."
"It wasn't a cliff."
"I experienced it as a cliff."
---
She ignored that.
Which was rude.
---
Shin'ya pushed himself up.
Everything hurt.
Again.
Shoulder. Side. Back. Leg.
Nothing broken.
Probably.
---
"Please tell me they didn't follow us," he said.
Yuki didn't answer.
Which—
He turned.
---
They hadn't.
---
Not directly.
---
The slope was steep enough, uneven enough, that the creatures above weren't rushing down.
They were watching.
Waiting.
---
"That's… somehow worse," Shin'ya said.
"Yes."
---
Silence settled.
Not the same silence as before.
This one felt heavier.
Denser.
Like the air itself had changed.
---
Yuki's gaze shifted forward.
Not back toward the creatures.
Ahead.
---
Shin'ya followed it.
---
And saw it.
---
At first, it didn't look like anything important.
Just a clearing.
Small.
Circular.
Surrounded by trees that grew slightly further apart than the rest.
---
Then he noticed the center.
---
A sword.
---
Standing upright.
Driven into the ground like it had always been there.
No pedestal.
No markings.
Just—
There.
---
"That's—" Shin'ya started.
"Yes."
---
Ketsugai.
---
It didn't glow.
Didn't radiate power.
Didn't look legendary.
---
It just existed.
---
And somehow, that made it worse.
---
Shin'ya took a step forward—
Then stopped.
---
Because something else moved.
---
Not behind.
Not above.
---
In the clearing.
---
It stood between them and the sword.
---
At first, Shin'ya thought it was one of the creatures.
Then he realized—
It wasn't.
---
It was bigger.
Not just in size.
In presence.
---
It stood upright.
Not fully human.
Not fully anything else.
Its limbs were longer, heavier. Its posture stable in a way the others hadn't been.
Its eyes—
Locked onto them.
---
"This one's different," Shin'ya said quietly.
"Yes."
---
The creature didn't rush.
Didn't circle.
Didn't test.
---
It stepped forward.
---
Once.
---
The ground shifted slightly under the weight.
---
Shin'ya exhaled slowly.
"Of course there's a boss."
Yuki didn't respond.
---
The creature moved.
---
Fast.
---
Faster than the others.
---
It crossed the distance in a blink—
---
Yuki intercepted.
---
Her blade met its strike—
---
And stopped.
---
Not cut.
Not deflected.
Stopped.
---
The impact alone forced her back half a step.
---
Shin'ya felt that.
---
That wasn't something they could overwhelm easily.
---
The creature followed through immediately.
No pause.
No reset.
---
A second strike—
Lower—
Faster—
---
Yuki adjusted—
Barely—
The edge of the attack grazed past her instead of connecting cleanly.
---
"Stronger," she said.
"I noticed!"
---
The creature shifted again.
---
Not attacking.
Repositioning.
---
It wasn't rushing.
---
It didn't need to.
---
"Don't let it control the pace," Yuki said.
"How?"
"Interrupt it."
---
Right.
Simple.
---
Shin'ya moved.
---
Not toward it.
---
To the side.
---
The creature's attention flicked toward him—
Just for a second.
---
That was enough.
---
Yuki stepped in.
---
Her strike came down clean—
---
The creature blocked.
---
Not with a weapon.
With its arm.
---
The blade cut—
But not deep.
---
It didn't react.
---
It grabbed.
---
Yuki pulled back instantly, avoiding the follow-up.
---
"Hard to cut," she said.
"Also noticed!"
---
The creature turned.
Fully now.
Toward Shin'ya.
---
That wasn't good.
---
It moved.
---
Shin'ya didn't wait this time.
---
He stepped forward—
---
Not back.
---
The creature's strike came down—
Heavy—
Direct—
---
Shin'ya shifted just enough—
The attack missed him by inches—
---
He was inside its range.
---
Too close.
---
Good.
---
He drove his hand forward—
---
Not blindly.
---
Focused.
---
The contact wasn't visible.
But the effect was.
---
The creature's movement stuttered.
Just for a second.
Muscles locking—
Signal interrupted—
---
That second mattered.
---
Yuki moved.
---
Her blade cut across its side—
Deeper this time.
---
The creature stepped back.
---
Not staggered.
Not weak.
---
Adjusting.
---
"Good," Yuki said.
Shin'ya blinked.
"That worked?"
"For now."
---
The creature tilted its head slightly.
---
Then moved again.
---
Faster.
---
This time—
It didn't go for Shin'ya.
---
It went for both of them.
---
A wide swing—
---
Yuki blocked—
The force pushed her back—
---
Shin'ya reacted—
---
He didn't think about elements.
Didn't name anything.
---
He moved his hand—
And the ground in front of the creature shifted—
Loose—
Unstable—
---
Its footing broke.
Just slightly.
---
Enough.
---
Yuki adjusted instantly—
Her next strike landed cleaner—
---
The creature reacted this time.
---
Not pain.
---
Recognition.
---
It stepped back.
---
Shin'ya exhaled.
"Okay, that's working."
"For now," Yuki repeated.
---
The creature straightened.
---
And then—
It changed.
---
Not visually.
---
In behavior.
---
It stopped testing.
---
Stopped adjusting.
---
It committed.
---
"Careful," Yuki said.
---
It vanished.
---
Not literally.
---
Just—
Too fast.
---
Shin'ya tracked it—
Too slow—
---
It appeared behind him.
---
He turned—
Too late—
---
Impact.
---
He didn't fully feel it.
Just—
Force.
---
He hit the ground hard.
Air knocked out of him.
---
Everything blurred.
---
The creature moved again—
---
Yuki intercepted—
Her blade forcing it away—
---
"Get up," she said.
---
Shin'ya coughed.
"Working on it."
---
He forced himself up.
Again.
---
The creature didn't wait.
---
It came again.
---
Shin'ya moved.
---
Not fast enough.
---
But enough.
---
This time—
He didn't react after.
---
He reacted during.
---
He stepped in—
Again—
---
Risky.
---
Necessary.
---
His hand met its movement—
---
And the interruption hit stronger this time.
---
Longer.
---
The creature's body locked—
Half a second—
---
Yuki didn't waste it.
---
Her blade cut deep.
---
The creature finally reacted.
---
A sound.
Low.
Not pain.
---
Acknowledgment.
---
It stepped back.
---
And for the first time—
---
It looked at them—
Differently.
---
Shin'ya breathed heavily.
Everything hurt.
More now.
---
Yuki didn't move.
Didn't relax.
---
"Can you keep going?" she asked.
---
Shin'ya looked at the creature.
Then at the sword behind it.
---
Ketsugai.
---
So close.
---
"Yeah," he said.
---
The creature stepped forward again.
---
Slower.
---
Deliberate.
---
Stronger.
---
"Good," Yuki said quietly.
---
And then—
---
They moved.
---
Together.
