Chapter 12 - Chapter. 12

They ran

Not immediately.

Not blindly.

For half a second—maybe less—both of them stood their ground.

Because running without direction here would be worse than staying.

Yuki's eyes moved once.

Left.

Right.

Forward.

Decision made.

"This way."

---

Then they moved.

---

The creatures didn't hesitate this time.

No testing.

No circling.

No waiting.

They surged forward all at once.

---

Shin'ya didn't look back.

Not at first.

He focused on keeping up—on matching Yuki's pace as she moved through the forest like she'd already memorized the terrain.

Roots.

Branches.

Uneven ground.

She avoided all of it without slowing.

---

Shin'ya didn't.

---

He stumbled once.

Caught himself.

Kept going.

---

Behind them—

The sound.

---

Not footsteps.

Too many for that.

---

Movement.

Through trees.

Over branches.

Around obstacles.

---

Faster than they should have been.

---

"They're gaining," Shin'ya said, breath uneven.

"I know."

"Any plan?"

"Yes."

"Is it good?"

"No."

---

That was honest.

---

A shape moved to his right—

Too fast—

---

Shin'ya reacted instantly.

---

Wind.

---

A sharp burst sideways—

The creature was pushed off its trajectory just enough to miss him as it lunged from between the trees.

---

It didn't stop.

It landed, adjusted—

And came again.

---

"Keep moving!" Yuki said.

"I am moving!"

"Faster."

"I'm trying!"

---

Another one dropped from above.

---

This time Shin'ya saw it coming.

Barely.

---

He stepped forward instead of back.

---

Wrong direction.

Right timing.

---

The creature hit the ground behind him instead of on top of him.

---

He didn't wait.

---

Fire.

---

A quick burst behind him—

Not to kill.

To disrupt.

---

The creature recoiled just enough.

---

Yuki cut it down as she passed it.

---

They didn't stop.

---

Didn't slow.

---

The forest blurred around them.

Trees passing too quickly to process.

Light flickering between branches.

Ground uneven, shifting, unpredictable.

---

Shin'ya's breathing got worse.

Not from lack of stamina.

From pressure.

---

Too many.

Too close.

Too fast.

---

"They're herding us," he said.

Yuki didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Yes."

---

That wasn't good.

---

"To where?" Shin'ya asked.

---

No response.

---

That was worse.

---

A shadow moved in front of them—

Not the element.

An actual shape.

---

Another creature.

Blocking the path.

---

Yuki didn't slow.

---

Her sword moved—

A single clean strike—

The creature didn't even have time to react before it dropped.

---

"Through," she said.

---

They kept going.

---

But now—

More appeared.

---

Not just behind.

Not just to the sides.

---

Ahead.

---

Cutting off paths.

Forcing direction.

---

Shin'ya felt it clearly now.

---

This wasn't random.

---

They were being pushed.

---

His foot caught on a root.

---

He stumbled—

Harder this time.

---

The ground rushed up—

---

No.

---

He forced himself forward instead of down.

Barely stayed upright.

---

Too slow.

---

A creature reached him.

---

Claws—

---

Pain.

---

Deeper this time.

Across his side.

---

He gasped—

Almost stopped—

---

Didn't.

---

Move.

---

He moved.

---

Water.

---

A sudden burst under his feet—

The ground shifted—

Slippery—

---

The creature behind him lost footing for half a second.

---

Half a second was enough.

---

Yuki pulled him forward by the arm.

Hard.

---

"Stay up," she said.

"I'm up."

"Stay that way."

---

They kept running.

---

Shin'ya's vision blurred slightly at the edges.

Not enough to stop him.

Enough to notice.

---

Not good.

---

Another one dropped in front of them—

---

Too close.

---

No time to dodge.

---

Shin'ya reacted.

---

Electric.

---

Stronger than before.

Less controlled.

More instinct.

---

The spark hit directly—

---

The creature froze mid-motion—

Just for a moment—

---

Yuki cut through it instantly.

---

"Better," she said.

---

Shin'ya almost laughed.

---

Now was not the time.

---

The trees began to thin.

Slightly.

Not open.

But different.

---

Yuki slowed—

Just enough.

---

"Careful," she said.

---

That tone again.

---

Shin'ya didn't like it.

---

They broke through the next line of trees—

---

And stopped.

---

Not by choice.

---

The ground ahead—

Dropped.

---

Not a cliff.

But close enough.

A steep slope, uneven, jagged, leading down into darker forest below.

---

Behind them—

The creatures emerged.

Dozens.

More than before.

Filling the space between trees.

Blocking retreat.

---

For a moment—

Everything stilled.

---

Shin'ya's breathing was loud in his own ears.

Too loud.

---

"They trapped us," he said.

---

Yuki didn't respond.

---

Her gaze shifted once.

Down the slope.

Back to the creatures.

---

Calculating.

---

"They won't stop," Shin'ya said.

"No."

---

The creatures began to move again.

Slowly.

Closing in.

---

Not rushing.

Not wasting energy.

---

They didn't need to.

---

"Yuki," Shin'ya said.

---

She didn't look at him.

---

"On my mark," she said.

---

"That's not reassuring."

"It's not meant to be."

---

The creatures lunged.

---

All at once.

---

Yuki moved forward—

Not back.

---

Her blade cut through the first two before they could reach her.

---

Shin'ya followed—

Not thinking—

Not hesitating—

---

Fire.

Wind.

Electric.

All at once.

Not clean.

Not controlled.

But enough.

---

Enough to create space.

---

For a second.

---

Just one.

---

"Now," Yuki said.

---

And she jumped.

---

Down the slope.

---

Shin'ya stared for half a second.

---

Then—

"Yeah, okay."

---

He followed.

---

The ground disappeared under his feet.

---

And the forest swallowed them.
