Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17: CORRECTION PROTOCOL

Chapter Seventeen: Correction Protocol

The world didn't shatter.

It tightened.

Like something invisible had grabbed reality by the throat and pulled it into place.

Amara felt it in her chest first—a sharp pressure that made it hard to breathe.

Then—

Silence.

The glitching stopped.

The crack sealed.

The other version of her—

Gone.

Just like that.

Amara stood there, frozen, her hand still outstretched in empty air.

"No…"

Her voice came out broken.

"No, that's not—"

A pulse ripped through the ground.

Hard.

Violent.

Amara staggered.

Ethan stepped back instantly, eyes scanning the space.

"It's starting," he said.

Her head snapped toward him.

"What is?"

He didn't answer.

Because he didn't need to.

The air shifted again—

This time, not unstable.

Precise.

Cold.

Controlled.

Mid-Chapter Hook ⚡

👉 If the system isn't breaking anymore… does that mean it's fixing things—or locking them down?

Amara's pulse spiked.

"No… no, this isn't better."

Because this—

This felt worse.

The world wasn't glitching anymore.

It was aligning.

Everything snapped into place with unnatural perfection.

Too clean.

Too exact.

Like reality had just been rewritten and sealed.

Her breathing turned uneven.

"It corrected it," she whispered.

Ethan nodded once.

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"Then why do I still feel like something's wrong?"

Before he could answer—

A sound cut through the silence.

A sharp intake of breath.

Not hers.

Not Ethan's.

Amara turned—

And her heart dropped.

"Kai?"

She was there.

On the ground.

A few feet away.

But something was off.

Very off.

Kai pushed herself up slowly, her movements unsteady, like her body wasn't responding the way it should.

Her hand gripped her side—

And when she pulled it away—

Blood.

Amara's stomach twisted.

"No—hey—what happened to you?"

She rushed over.

Dropped to her knees beside her.

Kai's breathing was uneven.

Her eyes struggled to focus.

"Don't…" she said weakly. "Don't let it—"

Her voice cut off as she winced.

Amara's chest tightened.

"Don't let what?"

Kai grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

Stronger than she should have been able to.

"It's not stable," she said.

Amara froze.

"What isn't?"

Kai's gaze flickered toward Ethan.

Then back to Amara.

"All of it."

Her pulse spiked.

"I figured that part out already."

"No," Kai said sharply, forcing herself upright. "You don't understand."

Ethan didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

Just watched.

That alone made Amara uneasy.

Kai's grip tightened.

"The system is breaking," she said.

Amara shook her head.

"No—it just fixed the duplicate. I saw it."

Kai let out a weak, almost bitter laugh.

"That wasn't fixing," she said. "That was damage control."

Her stomach dropped.

"What's the difference?"

Kai's voice lowered.

"Fixing means it's in control."

A pause.

"Damage control means it's losing it."

Silence hit hard.

Amara's pulse roared.

Mid-Chapter Hook ⚡

👉 If the system is losing control… then what exactly is trying to take over?

Ethan finally stepped forward.

"That's not entirely accurate," he said.

Kai's eyes snapped to him.

"Then say what it is."

He held her gaze.

"The system isn't failing," he said.

Amara's chest tightened.

"Then what is it doing?"

A beat.

Then—

"It's prioritizing."

That word felt wrong.

Too calculated.

Too intentional.

Amara frowned.

"Prioritizing what?"

Ethan's gaze shifted to her.

And stayed there.

"You."

Her breath caught.

"No…"

Kai's grip tightened again.

"He's right," she said quietly.

Amara looked between them.

"No. No, I'm not the center of this."

Kai shook her head weakly.

"You are now."

The ground pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

A low hum filled the air—

Familiar.

Too familiar.

Amara's heart sank.

"They're coming," she whispered.

Ethan didn't deny it.

Kai forced herself to stand.

Barely steady.

"We don't have time," she said.

Amara stood with her.

"What do we do?"

Kai looked at her.

Really looked.

"You stop being seen."

Her pulse spiked.

"How exactly do I do that?"

Kai hesitated.

And that hesitation said everything.

"You can't," she admitted.

Amara's chest tightened.

"Then what was the point of saying it?"

Before Kai could answer—

The air split.

Clean.

Sharp.

A tear opened above them—

And the figures dropped through.

Multiple.

Faster this time.

No hesitation.

No delay.

Amara's breath caught.

"They're not waiting anymore."

"No," Ethan said.

"They're not."

The figures surrounded them instantly.

Perfect formation.

Perfect timing.

Like this had always been the plan.

Amara's pulse hammered.

"Okay… okay, think."

Her eyes darted around.

No escape.

No delay.

No reset.

Her chest tightened.

"There has to be something—"

Kai grabbed her arm.

"There isn't," she said.

Amara shook her head.

"No. I didn't come this far just to get erased."

Kai's voice dropped.

"Then stop acting like you can outrun this."

That hit harder than expected.

Amara stilled.

Her mind raced—

Choices.

Always choices.

But this time—

No clear path.

Ethan stepped back.

Out of the circle.

And that—

That was new.

Amara's eyes snapped to him.

"What are you doing?"

He didn't answer.

He just watched.

Like before.

Like he wasn't part of this.

Her chest tightened.

"Ethan—"

One of the figures stepped forward.

Closer.

Its presence pressed against her mind.

Cold.

Precise.

Final.

Then—

It spoke.

Not out loud.

But she heard it.

Clear.

Direct.

"Anomaly confirmed."

Amara's breath caught.

"No…"

The figure continued.

"Memory retention beyond acceptable parameters."

Her pulse spiked.

"No, wait—"

"Sequence disruption verified."

The air grew heavier.

Kai tightened her grip.

"Amara…"

But Amara couldn't look away.

Couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

The words hit again—

Harder this time.

Final.

"Designation assigned—"

A pause.

Long enough to feel like a verdict.

"Irreversible error."

Everything stopped.

Her heart.

Her thoughts.

The world around her.

Amara's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"…what?"

The figure didn't repeat it.

Didn't need to.

Because she felt it.

Deep.

Locked in.

Something had changed.

Something permanent.

Kai's grip shook slightly.

"That's not good," she said.

Amara let out a hollow breath.

"No…"

Her eyes lifted slowly.

"…that's worse than not good."

The figures stepped closer.

Closing in.

No hesitation now.

No delay.

Just execution.

And for the first time—

Amara realized something terrifying.

This wasn't about correction anymore.

This was elimination.
