Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15: THE WRONG TIMELINE

Chapter Fifteen: The Wrong Timeline

Rain kept falling.

But something about it felt… delayed.

Amara stood frozen in the middle of the street, her chest rising and falling too fast. The man—Arin, he called her that—was gone.

Just gone.

Like he'd never been there.

Her fingers tightened.

"No… no, this is wrong."

Everything looked the same.

But it wasn't.

She could feel it.

The air didn't sit right. The sounds didn't carry the same way. Even the rain hitting the ground felt slightly off—like it was happening a second too late.

Amara turned slowly.

Looking.

Searching.

"Ethan," she called out.

Her voice didn't shake—but something inside her did.

A beat.

Then—

"I'm right here."

Her heart skipped.

She turned sharply—

And there he was.

Ethan.

Standing a few steps away.

Alive.

Normal.

But something in his expression—

Cold.

Too focused.

Too aware.

Amara took a cautious step toward him.

"You remember?" she asked quickly.

Ethan frowned.

"Remember what?"

Her chest tightened.

That wasn't right.

Not after everything.

Not after Level Four.

"You don't remember the street?" she pressed. "The bus? The reset?"

He stared at her for a moment.

Then gave a short, confused shake of his head.

"Amara… what are you talking about?"

Mid-Chapter Hook ⚡

👉 If Ethan doesn't remember… then why does he feel different?

Amara stepped back slowly.

"No… no, something's wrong."

Ethan's expression shifted.

Concern—but controlled.

"Yeah," he said. "You're acting strange."

That tone.

It didn't match.

Not the Ethan she knew.

Her pulse spiked.

"You're not reacting," she said. "You're just… watching."

A pause.

Too long.

Then—

Ethan smiled.

Slight.

Measured.

"I always watch first."

Amara's stomach dropped.

That was new.

Very new.

She took another step back.

"Okay… yeah, no. That's not you."

Ethan didn't move.

Didn't deny it.

Instead—

"Things change," he said calmly.

Her breathing turned uneven.

"That's not how this works."

"Isn't it?"

The rain stuttered again.

The world flickered.

Just for a second—

And when it came back—

A car was parked where there hadn't been one before.

Amara blinked.

"What—"

She turned.

The building behind her—

Different.

Not broken.

Not glitched.

Just… wrong.

Like she was standing in a version of reality that had been rewritten mid-scene.

Her heart pounded.

"This isn't the same loop," she whispered.

Ethan watched her closely.

"No," he said.

"It's not."

That confirmed it.

Her stomach dropped.

"You know," she said slowly.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Everything went still.

Amara's voice sharpened.

"How much?"

Ethan didn't answer right away.

Instead, he stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But not familiar either.

"Enough," he said.

That wasn't an answer.

That was a warning.

Amara's chest tightened.

"You're not supposed to remember," she said.

Ethan tilted his head slightly.

"Neither are you."

That hit harder than it should have.

The world flickered again—

Longer this time.

The street stretched—

Then snapped back.

Unstable.

Unpredictable.

Amara looked around quickly.

"This place is breaking."

Ethan shook his head.

"No," he said.

"It's adjusting."

Her breath caught.

"To what?"

His gaze locked onto hers.

"To you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Amara took another step back.

"No… I already went through that."

"Not like this," he replied.

Her pulse roared.

"What's different?"

Ethan's expression didn't change.

"You didn't reset."

That landed.

Hard.

Mid-Chapter Hook ⚡

👉 If there's no reset… then what happens when things go wrong?

Amara swallowed.

"So what—this is permanent now?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Which told her everything.

The air shifted again.

This time—

More violently.

The street around them began to glitch in pieces.

Cars flickering in and out.

Buildings shifting positions.

People—

Gone.

No one else was there.

Just them.

Amara's breathing turned shallow.

"This isn't stable."

"No," Ethan agreed.

"It's not meant to be."

Her voice dropped.

"Then why bring me here?"

He held her gaze.

"You brought yourself."

That again.

Her choice.

Her decision.

Her consequences.

Amara clenched her jaw.

"Then tell me what I'm supposed to do now."

Ethan stepped closer.

Close enough now that she could see it clearly—

He wasn't confused.

He wasn't reacting.

He was… calculating.

"You adapt," he said.

"To what?"

"To change."

That wasn't helpful.

At all.

The world flickered again—

Harder.

The street warped—

Then split.

Just slightly.

Like two versions were trying to exist at the same time.

Amara's eyes widened.

"Wait…"

She stepped forward.

Closer to the distortion.

"What is that?"

Ethan didn't stop her.

"Look closer."

Her chest tightened.

Every instinct told her not to.

But she did anyway.

Amara stepped toward the split—

And saw it.

Another version of the street.

Same place.

Same rain.

Same moment.

But—

Different.

Her breath caught.

Because in that version—

She was there.

Standing.

Alive.

Talking to Ethan.

Normal.

Like nothing had ever happened.

Amara staggered back.

"No…"

Her voice broke.

"That's not possible."

Ethan watched her reaction carefully.

"It is now."

Her heart pounded violently.

"That's another timeline."

"Yes."

Her breathing turned uneven.

"And I'm in it."

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"Then what am I?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Not immediately.

He let the question sit.

Heavy.

Then—

"You're the one who doesn't belong."

That hit deeper than anything else.

Amara shook her head.

"No… I made it this far. I didn't break just to be—"

"To be what?" he cut in.

"A mistake?"

Silence.

The world flickered again—

More aggressively.

The two versions of the street began to overlap.

Bleed into each other.

Amara looked between them—

Her mind racing—

Think.

Think.

If both exist—

Then something has to give.

Her pulse spiked.

"They can't both stay," she whispered.

Ethan didn't deny it.

"No."

Her stomach dropped.

"Then one of them—"

"Will collapse," he finished.

Her breathing stopped.

Mid-Chapter Hook ⚡

👉 If one timeline must collapse… which one survives?

Amara's eyes locked onto the other version of herself.

Laughing.

Talking.

Alive.

Unaffected.

Everything she wasn't anymore.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"That version…" she whispered.

Ethan followed her gaze.

"Yes."

Her voice dropped.

"That's the life I lost."

A pause.

Then—

"Or the one you never had."

That stung.

Amara's fists clenched.

"No."

Her voice steadied.

"No, I chose forward."

Ethan didn't argue.

Didn't comfort.

He just watched.

Waiting.

For her to decide.

Again.

The two realities began to tear against each other.

Stronger now.

Louder.

Unstable.

Amara's heart pounded.

This was it.

Another choice.

Another consequence.

Another moment where everything changes.

She took a slow breath.

Then—

Stepped forward.

Not toward Ethan.

Not toward safety.

Toward the split.

Toward the other version of herself.

Ethan's voice followed quietly—

"Careful."

But she didn't stop.

She reached out—

Her fingers trembling—

The moment her hand touched the distortion—

The other Amara turned.

And looked straight at her.

Smiled.

Like she knew.

Like she had always known.

Amara's breath caught.

And then—

That version of her stepped forward.

Out of the other timeline.

Into hers.

Alive.

Real.

Standing right in front of her.
