Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: LEVEL THREE

Chapter Ten: Level Three

Amara hit the ground hard.

Air rushed out of her lungs as her knees slammed into rough concrete. For a second, everything went blank—no sound, no thought—just impact.

Then it rushed back.

Cold.

Silence.

Weight.

She sucked in a sharp breath and forced her eyes open.

Darkness stretched around her, but not the kind she'd seen before. This one felt heavy, like the world itself had been drained of life and left behind.

Amara pushed herself up slowly.

"Okay…" she whispered, more to steady herself than anything else. "Still here."

Still thinking.

Still remembering.

That mattered.

She looked up—and froze.

This wasn't a room.

It was a city.

Or what used to be one.

Buildings stood in broken halves. Windows were empty holes. The ground was cracked, uneven, scattered with debris like something had torn through the place and never looked back.

Nothing moved.

Nothing lived.

Her chest tightened.

"Level Three," she murmured. "Of course it is."

A sound behind her.

She turned quickly.

Kai was already on her feet, scanning the area like she didn't trust a single inch of it.

Knife still in her hand.

Always ready.

"You good?" Amara asked.

Kai gave a short nod. "For now."

Amara stood fully, brushing dust from her palms.

"This place feels different," she said. "Not controlled."

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"It is controlled," she said. "Just not perfectly."

That didn't sit well.

Before Amara could respond—

A sharp metallic scrape echoed through the ruins.

Both of them froze.

The sound carried too far.

Too clean.

Not random.

Amara's pulse jumped.

"Tell me that's just the wind."

Kai didn't even look at her.

Another scrape.

Closer.

"Yeah," Amara muttered. "That's definitely not the wind."

Kai shifted her stance, angling herself toward the sound.

"Stay close."

"Trust me, I'm not wandering anywhere."

A shadow flickered between two broken structures ahead.

Fast.

Gone.

Amara blinked.

"You saw that?"

"Yes."

"Good. I'd hate to be the only one losing it."

Silence followed.

Thick.

Waiting.

Then—

A figure stepped into view.

Amara's breath caught.

"Wait…"

It wasn't distorted.

Wasn't broken.

Just a man.

Standing there like he belonged.

Watching them.

Her voice dropped.

"That's new."

Kai didn't lower the knife.

"Don't trust it."

"I wasn't planning to," Amara said, though she couldn't look away.

The man raised his hand slightly.

Not threatening.

Just enough to show he knew they were on edge.

"I've been waiting," he said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Amara exchanged a quick glance with Kai.

Then back at him.

"For us?" she asked.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

That made it worse.

Kai stepped forward a fraction.

"Why?"

The man studied them for a moment.

"You're not supposed to be here yet."

Amara exhaled sharply.

"We keep hearing that."

"I'm aware," he said.

Something about that answer—

Like he'd seen this before—

Made her stomach tighten.

"Who are you?" she asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Someone who made it further than you."

Silence.

Amara felt it sink in.

"You got out?" she asked.

The man tilted his head slightly.

"There's no 'out,'" he said.

That wasn't comforting.

At all.

"Then why are you still here?" Kai pressed.

The man's expression didn't change.

"I didn't stay," he said.

Amara frowned.

"Then how are you here?"

Another pause.

This one longer.

He looked at her directly.

"I was sent."

Something shifted.

Not around them.

In him.

Amara saw it—just for a second.

A flicker.

Like his outline didn't fully agree with itself.

Her breath caught.

"You're not like us," she said quietly.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"No," he replied.

"I'm not."

Kai moved instantly, placing herself between him and Amara.

"Don't come any closer."

He stopped.

Easily.

Like he didn't need to push.

"You've already broken more rules than you understand," he said.

Amara stepped forward despite herself.

"Then explain them."

"You're not ready."

"I'm tired of hearing that," she snapped.

His gaze held steady.

"And yet it's still true."

A sound cut through the tension.

Behind them.

Footsteps.

More than one.

Amara turned slightly—

And her chest tightened.

Figures.

Moving through the ruins.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Not one.

Several.

"Okay," she whispered. "That's worse."

Kai didn't turn.

"They're reacting," she said.

The man shook his head lightly.

"They're responding."

"To what?" Amara asked.

He met her eyes.

"To you."

Her stomach dropped.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," he said calmly, "you've been noticed."

The figures were closer now.

Too close.

Amara's voice tightened.

"Then help us."

The man studied her.

Long enough to make her uneasy.

"Why should I?"

Amara didn't look away.

"Because you said you were waiting," she said. "So clearly, we matter."

A beat.

Then he nodded once.

"Fair."

Kai's voice was low. "This is a mistake."

"Maybe," Amara said. "But we don't have time for better ones."

The footsteps closed in.

The man exhaled slowly.

"One piece of advice," he said.

Amara leaned in slightly.

"Make it count."

His gaze sharpened.

"When you reach Level Four," he said, "you won't survive by running."

Amara frowned.

"Then how—"

"By choosing."

Her breath caught.

That word again.

Before she could ask more—

He stepped back.

And the space around him—

Folded.

No glitch.

No break.

Just—

Gone.

Amara stared at the empty space.

"Okay," she said under her breath. "I hate that."

Kai grabbed her arm.

"We move."

They ran.

Through broken streets.

Past empty shells of buildings.

The sound behind them grew louder.

Closer.

Relentless.

Amara's thoughts raced.

Choosing.

Level Four.

Sent.

None of it made sense yet—but it would.

It had to.

"Where are we going?" she asked between breaths.

"Forward," Kai replied.

"That's not helpful."

"It's all we have."

They turned a corner—

And stopped.

The ground ended.

Not a cliff.

Not clean.

Just—

Gone.

Like the world had been cut off.

Darkness stretched below.

Endless.

Amara's chest tightened.

"Tell me that's not where this is going."

Kai stepped beside her.

Looked down.

Then back at her.

"It is."

Behind them—

The figures were closing in.

No time left.

No space.

No options.

Amara's heart pounded.

"This is insane," she said.

Kai met her gaze.

"No," she said quietly.

"This is Level Three."

The footsteps were right there now.

Amara looked down again.

Then back at Kai.

One breath.

One decision.

"Tell me something," Amara said quickly. "If we jump—"

Kai didn't let her finish.

"We don't know."

That answer hit hard.

Amara nodded slowly.

"Right."

The figures stepped into view behind them.

Too close.

Too many.

No hesitation left.

Amara took a step forward.

The edge crumbled slightly beneath her foot.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

She looked down into the darkness—

And for a split second—

She thought she saw something moving.

Not falling.

Waiting.

Her breath caught.

"Kai…" she whispered. "That's not empty."

Kai's expression changed instantly.

"What?"

Amara didn't look away.

"There's something down there."

The sound behind them surged—

Closer—

Closer—

No time.

No certainty.

Just one choice.

Amara stepped forward—

And jumped.
