Elden Ring: As the Guildmaster, I Refused Miquella Author: Salted Fish is Here
"So, Professor Reruss, what exactly is the point of telling me all this?"
Mohg looked at the white-bearded old man before him with a look of pure confusion.
"The point? Do you still not understand?!"
Reruss's eyes widened at Mohg's words. He stared at him intently, his voice rising in pitch. Mohg simply shook his head with a flat expression.
Agitated, Reruss rushed to the desk, spreading out books one by one and unfurling ancient, weathered scrolls.
"Look, Gwyn! Look! This is the knowledge left behind by countless magic professors. With your talent, you could integrate this knowledge and go even further—you could become a Grandmaster on the same level as Master Azur and Master Lusat!"
"I understand all that, but... I am a warrior. Studying magic is not my destiny. As Lady Rellana told you, my purpose in learning sorcery is merely to find a place to belong."
Mohg spoke the words befitting his current persona, though deep down, his feelings toward sorcery weren't much different. He wasn't about to spend his life hunched over scrolls.
He had a Dynasty to build. He had to unearth the power of the Crucible, harness the strength of the Formless Mother, seize the godhead of blood, and probe the mysteries of horn-culture and spiritual power.
Perhaps he did possess a talent for Glintstone sorcery that far surpassed the average person, but it paled in comparison to his affinity for the Crucible and spiritual energies. Whether for the sake of his Dynasty or for raw power, magic was not his primary path.
"You! This is a total waste of natural gifts!! You... you are squandering your life!!"
Reruss was so incensed his beard practically stood on end. He even picked up his wooden teaching cane, pointing it tremulously at Mohg.
"To each their own, Professor Reruss." Mohg shook his head.
"No! I'm going to tell Lady Rellana. She will surely support me in making you dedicate yourself to sorcery!"
Reruss shook his head violently, muttering to himself as he began to march toward the door.
Hearing this, Mohg's calm, composed facade instantly darkened.
Son of a...! You're calling for outside help because you can't convince me? If you can't win the game, don't try to flip the board!
Clap!
"Hmm?" Reruss turned around to find Mohg wearing a stiff smile, his hand firmly gripping the professor's arm.
"Ahem... Professor Reruss, I think there's no need to trouble Lady Rellana with such a trivial matter. We can talk this out, can't we?"
"No! I am going to find Lady Rellana!"
Reruss shook his head and tried to yank his arm away, only to find that Mohg's grip was surprisingly powerful. He stared at Mohg, eyes wide.
"Gwyn, what is the meaning of this?"
"Ahem... my meaning is, please don't notify Lady Rellana. I can promise to study a bit more magic."
"Fine. Let go of my hand."
"I won't let go unless you promise."
"I promise. Now let go."
"I don't believe you."
"You...!"
Reruss's face turned bright red, looking as though steam might actually start venting from his head.
Hiding in the shadows, Rennala watched this scene and couldn't help but let out a laugh.
"Haha, I didn't expect this little guy to be so amusing. It seems there shouldn't be any major problems with him... It's a pity I can't observe him in the dorms, so I can't be sure if he's the one who stole Azur's Glintstone Staff... but I did have people search his room..."
Rennala narrowed her eyes, deep in thought.
She still felt he wasn't the culprit. An artifact like Azur's staff emitted powerful magical fluctuations; to hide it completely would require someone highly proficient in sorcery.
Unless the person had smuggled the staff out of the Academy immediately—but how? All the warp gates within the Academy were under her control, and not a single one had been activated since the theft. Nor had she detected any unauthorized portal magic within the walls.
She concluded the most likely scenario was that an insider had done it and hidden it using some specialized method.
"Whatever. Since the boy is under Rellana's management now, he shouldn't be able to cause any significant chaos..."
"What are you two doing?"
Rellana walked into Reruss's classroom, looking with a bizarre expression at the two men scuffling on the floor.
The sight was indeed strange. Mohg was clutching one of Reruss's hands while Reruss had one foot planted against Mohg's chest, trying to push himself away. Mohg was holding back for fear of accidentally injuring the old man, while Reruss couldn't break free from Mohg's sheer strength and was afraid of using magic to hurt his student. They were stuck in a literal deadlock on the floor.
Seeing Rellana, Reruss looked overjoyed and hurriedly spoke: "My Lady, I—"
Before he could finish, Mohg lunged forward and clapped a hand over the professor's mouth.
Facing Rellana's questioning gaze, Mohg gave a sheepish grin. "My Lady, do you have business with us?"
"Yes, in a way. I need you to leave the Academy and do something for me."
Both Mohg and Reruss froze, then exchanged a glance. They scrambled up from the floor and straightened their clothes. Reruss instantly transformed from a disheveled mess back into a venerable, respected magic professor.
"My Lady, though I loathe to say it, if this is a matter of great importance, I do not believe Lord Gwyn should be the one sent out."
Reruss glanced at Mohg. Mohg didn't react; it was a reasonable stance. How could a complete newcomer be fully trusted?
"I know what you wish to say, but this is not a major affair," Rellana explained. "The mission is to hunt down a small squad led by a Cuckoo Knight. He has betrayed the Carian Royal Family, pillaged a village, and is currently fleeing toward Limgrave with the loot."
"Isn't that area blockaded by the Storm King's troops and the Carian forces?" Mohg asked.
"Indeed. However, there has never been just one road to Limgrave. There are several paths through the mountains and forests. They are more treacherous and limit the number of people who can pass at once. Your task is to intercept and eliminate them."
Rellana looked Mohg in the eye as she finished her explanation.
"My Lady certainly has... quite a lot of faith in me," Mohg said, his tone unreadable.
"They are not particularly strong. There is only one Cuckoo Knight and his two squires who pose any real threat. As long as you are careful, there shouldn't be any accidents."
"I understand. I'll head out shortly."
Mohg nodded and accepted the task. He knew exactly what this was: both a probe and a test.
