Chapter 34 - CHAPTER 34: Targeted Weakness

The failure of disruption did not end the interference.

It refined it.

General pressure had proven ineffective. Noise, obstruction, observation—none of it had broken the structure Rei had imposed. So the strategy shifted.

From environment…

To target.

Rei recognized it before Airi did.

The signs were subtle.

Too subtle for most.

But not for her.

That morning, the usual patterns were gone.

No crowded corridors.

No deliberate obstruction.

No visible interference.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Airi walked beside her, posture steady, steps aligned.

"…It's quiet today," she said.

"Yes," Rei replied.

"…That's good, right?"

"No."

Airi blinked.

"…No?"

Rei didn't slow her pace.

"Noise is inefficient," she said. "Precision is not."

The meaning settled slowly.

"…So they changed tactics."

"Yes."

Airi's fingers tightened slightly.

"…What kind?"

Rei stopped walking.

Airi stopped instantly.

"Direct," Rei said.

Silence.

"…On me?"

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Without comfort.

Without softening.

Airi's breath caught.

"…Why me?"

Rei looked at her.

"Because you are the most efficient point of failure."

The words landed clean.

Precise.

Unavoidable.

Airi didn't look away.

Not this time.

"…Then I won't fail."

Rei observed her.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Only intent.

Progress confirmed.

They resumed walking.

The campus moved around them as usual.

Students talked.

Laughed.

Trained.

But beneath it—

Something else had shifted.

Rei felt it.

Eyes lingered longer on Airi.

Not openly hostile.

Not aggressive.

Focused.

"They're watching me," Airi said quietly.

"Yes."

"…I'll ignore it."

"No," Rei said.

Airi frowned slightly.

"…What?"

"Do not ignore it," Rei continued.

"Recognize it."

A pause.

"…And then?"

"Decide it has no value."

Airi nodded slowly.

"…Okay."

They entered the training hall.

The moment they stepped inside—

It began.

A girl approached.

Alone.

Calm.

Not aggressive.

Not nervous.

Controlled.

"Airi Kanzaki," she said.

Airi froze.

"…Yes?"

"I'd like to speak with you."

Rei didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

She watched.

"…About what?" Airi asked.

The girl smiled slightly.

"About your partner."

Silence.

Airi's fingers tightened.

"…What about her?"

The girl stepped closer.

"You rely on her too much."

A direct strike.

Airi didn't respond immediately.

"You don't think for yourself," the girl continued.

"You don't act independently. You're just… following."

Each word landed with precision.

Not loud.

Not emotional.

Calculated.

Rei observed.

Psychological targeting confirmed.

Airi's breathing shifted.

"…That's not—"

"It is," the girl interrupted.

She tilted her head slightly.

"If she wasn't there, what would you do?"

Silence.

Airi didn't answer.

"…Nothing," the girl said softly.

Airi's expression tightened.

"You'd hesitate," she continued.

"You'd freeze. You'd fail."

A pause.

"And she knows that."

That was the key.

Rei stepped forward.

"Enough," she said.

The girl turned her gaze to Rei.

"I'm just stating facts," she replied calmly.

Rei's expression didn't change.

"You're applying pressure," she said.

A faint smile.

"Yes."

No denial.

No hesitation.

Direct.

"Because it works," the girl added.

Rei's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Not here," she said.

The girl's eyes flickered briefly to Airi.

"We'll see," she replied.

Then she turned and walked away.

Silence followed.

Airi didn't move.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her posture unstable.

Rei stepped closer.

"Look at me," she said.

Airi hesitated—

Then did.

"…She's not wrong," Airi said quietly.

Rei didn't respond immediately.

"…If you weren't here…"

Her voice faltered.

"I know," Rei said.

Airi blinked.

"…You do?"

"Yes."

No denial.

No reassurance.

Only acknowledgment.

Airi's chest tightened.

"…Then what do I do?"

Rei stepped closer.

"Decide," she said.

"…Decide what?"

"Whether that matters."

Silence.

Airi didn't answer immediately.

Her thoughts moved.

Slowly.

Then faster.

"…It doesn't," she said at last.

Rei observed her.

"…Because even if it's true…"

Airi's voice steadied.

"I still get stronger with you."

Rei's gaze held hers.

"…And that's what matters."

The answer was simple.

But it held.

Stability maintained.

Rei nodded once.

"Then continue," she said.

Airi exhaled slowly.

"…Okay."

They moved to the court.

The pressure didn't disappear.

It shifted.

Now it was internal.

Airi ran.

Her movements were sharp at first.

Then—

A fraction slower.

The doubt hadn't vanished.

Rei stepped in immediately.

"Focus," she said.

"…I am."

"No," Rei replied.

"You're dividing attention."

Airi clenched her jaw.

"…Then fix it."

Rei stepped closer.

"Remove the variable," she said.

"…Which one?"

Rei's voice lowered.

"The question itself."

Silence.

Airi blinked.

"…Don't think about it?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Then what do I think about?"

Rei held her gaze.

"Me."

The answer came again.

The same.

But deeper this time.

Airi nodded slowly.

"…Okay."

They moved again.

This time—

No hesitation.

No doubt.

The words still existed.

But they had lost weight.

Because something else had replaced them.

Rei.

The movement aligned.

Faster.

Sharper.

More precise.

Across the room, observers watched.

The strategy had worked—

Partially.

The weakness had been exposed.

But not broken.

And that made it more dangerous.

Rei turned away.

"Continue," she said.

Airi followed.

Closer.

More stable.

But now—

With awareness.

And that changed everything.
