Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 33: Intentional Disruption

Pressure alone had not been enough.

That realization spread quietly among the observing students. Subtle interference, whispered comments, passive observation—none of it had broken the synchronization between Rei and Airi.

Which meant escalation was inevitable.

The disruption began before Rei even entered the training hall.

She noticed it immediately.

The corridor leading to the gym was more crowded than usual. Not randomly. Deliberately. Students lingered near the entrance, forming clusters that narrowed the passageway. Conversations paused as she approached, only to resume once she passed.

A controlled obstruction.

Not direct.

But intentional.

Airi slowed slightly behind her.

"…This is new," she murmured.

"Yes," Rei said.

"They're doing this on purpose."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…What do we do?"

Rei didn't stop walking.

"Walk."

She moved forward without hesitation.

The crowd parted—but slowly. Reluctantly. Just enough to force minor adjustments.

Airi followed, her steps tightening, her shoulders slightly tense.

The proximity between them broke for a moment.

Just a fraction.

Rei noticed.

"Closer," she said without turning.

Airi stepped in immediately.

The distance closed again.

Stability restored.

They entered the gym.

Inside—

The atmosphere was worse.

The court was occupied. Not by a single pair, but several. Overlapping drills. Intersecting paths. Movement designed not for efficiency, but for interference.

Controlled chaos.

Rei's gaze swept the room.

Then stopped.

At the far end—

Kakeru Ryuen

He leaned casually against the wall, watching.

Not participating.

Not intervening.

Just observing.

Airi followed Rei's gaze.

"…Is this his doing?"

Rei didn't answer immediately.

"Partially," she said.

Because this wasn't one strategy.

It was multiple groups acting in alignment.

Which made it more dangerous.

"Stay close," Rei said.

"I will."

They stepped onto the court.

Immediately—

A ball rolled into their path.

Airi flinched.

Rei didn't.

She stepped over it without breaking pace.

A second interruption followed.

Two students crossed directly in front of them, forcing them to slow.

Airi's rhythm broke again.

Rei stopped.

"Look at me," she said.

Airi did.

"Do not react to them," Rei said.

"…I'm trying."

"Don't try."

Airi's jaw tightened.

"…Right."

Rei stepped closer.

"Replace them," she said.

"…With you."

"Yes."

Airi nodded.

The hesitation didn't disappear.

But it compressed.

Contained.

"Move," Rei said.

They began.

The interference continued.

Balls crossing their path.

Students shifting into their space.

Voices rising at key moments.

Deliberate.

Precise.

Airi's steps faltered once.

Then again.

Her breathing changed.

Her focus wavered.

Rei saw it.

Pressure exceeding current threshold.

She stepped in front of Airi again.

"Stop."

Airi froze.

"…I can't ignore everything," she said quietly.

Rei stepped closer.

"You don't need to ignore everything," she said.

A pause.

"…Then what?"

Rei's voice lowered.

"Prioritize me above everything."

Silence.

Airi didn't respond immediately.

"…That's the same thing."

"No," Rei said.

She leaned slightly closer.

"It's not about removing them," she continued.

"It's about reducing their value."

Airi's breath caught.

"…And increasing yours?"

"Yes."

The words settled deeper this time.

Not instruction.

Conditioning.

"…Okay," Airi said.

Her voice was quieter.

But steadier.

"Again," Rei said.

They moved.

This time—

Airi didn't look at the others.

Didn't react to movement.

Didn't follow the noise.

Her focus narrowed.

Sharpened.

Onto Rei.

The interference continued.

But its impact decreased.

A ball rolled past.

No reaction.

A student cut across their path.

Airi adjusted—without breaking rhythm.

Voices rose.

She didn't hear them.

Rei observed.

Adaptation successful.

Across the gym, Ryuen's expression shifted slightly.

Interest.

Not in the disruption.

In the response.

Rei met his gaze briefly.

Acknowledgment.

Then returned to Airi.

"Faster," she said.

Airi increased her pace.

"Closer."

She adjusted.

"Again."

The repetition continued.

Until the interference lost meaning.

Until the chaos became irrelevant.

Until only one variable remained.

Rei.

Airi stopped at last.

Her breathing was steady.

Her posture aligned.

Her focus intact.

"…It worked again," she said.

"Yes," Rei replied.

A pause.

"…I didn't hear them."

Rei stepped closer.

"You didn't need to."

Airi looked at her.

"…Is this… enough?"

Rei held her gaze.

"No."

Airi blinked.

"…No?"

"This is the baseline," Rei said.

Silence.

"…Then I'll go further."

The answer came without hesitation.

Rei observed her.

Commitment increasing.

"Good," she said.

Across the gym, the disruption began to fade.

Not because the students stopped.

But because it no longer worked.

And once a strategy lost effectiveness—

It lost value.

Rei turned away.

"Training continues," she said.

Airi followed immediately.

Closer.

Stronger.

More stable.

And this time—

Nothing interfered.
