Chapter 13 - Morning Promises

Kamsi's phone rang beside her pillow.

She turned slightly but didn't open her eyes. The room was quiet, the curtains drawn just enough to keep the sunlight soft. Her body felt heavy. The exhaustion from her night shift still clung to her muscles.

The phone kept ringing.

She reached for it blindly, her fingers brushing the screen before finally grabbing it. She squinted at the display.

David calling.

Her expression softened immediately.

She cleared her throat before answering.

"Hello…"

Her voice was still thick with sleep.

"Hey baby, Were you sleeping?"

David's voice came through, calm and familiar.

Kamsi adjusted slightly on the bed.

"Yeah… I just got back this morning. Night shift."

"Oh," he said, dragging the word slightly.

"So you didn't even think to call me?"

She frowned lightly.

"I was tired. I slept immediately."

There was a brief pause.

"So you're not coming again?" he asked casually.

Kamsi's eyes opened fully.

"I don't know oo, I'm so tired"

"You didn't later come yesterday evening. Now today you're sleeping."

She sat up slowly. "I never told you I was coming yesterday."

"Nothing spoil sha."

Kamsi adjusted her hair, suddenly more alert.

"I'll come," she said quickly.

David's voice softened.

"You sure?"

"Yes. I just need to get ready."

"Don't take too long," he replied.

"I've been waiting."

Her heart warmed slightly at the words.

"I won't."

"Good," he said.

"Call me when you're close."

"Okay."

They hung up.

Kamsi lowered the phone slowly.

She sat still for a moment.

A small smile formed on her face.

Maybe Nancy had been wrong.

Maybe he really had just been busy.

She stretched her arms, then stood up from the bed. The tiredness was still there, but it didn't feel as heavy anymore.

She walked toward the bathroom, already thinking about what to wear.

Across town, Nancy lay on her stomach, scrolling through her phone while Amaka sat beside her on the bed, eating groundnuts.

The room was relaxed, slightly messy, with clothes scattered over a chair and a bags resting open near the door.

Amaka glanced at Nancy.

"So… Awfar that guy from yesterday?"

Nancy didn't look up. "Which one?"

Amaka rolled her eyes.

"Don't do that. The rich one."

Nancy smiled faintly.

"I'm waiting for him."

Amaka leaned forward.

"You like him?"

Nancy shrugged.

"Like who? Abeg oo."

"But you were smiling yesterday."

Nancy laughed lightly.

"I smile at everybody."

Amaka shook her head.

"Naso"

Nancy flipped her phone around idly.

"Let's see how it goes first."

"Has he texted?"

"No."

Amaka clicked her tongue.

"Maybe he has moved on."

Nancy smirked. "Then I've moved on too."

Just then, Nancy's phone rang.

Both girls froze.

Nancy looked at the screen.

Her eyes widened.

"It's him," she whispered.

Amaka gasped quietly.

"Pick! Pick!"

Nancy sat up quickly, trying to compose herself. She cleared her throat before answering.

"Hello."

"Hi Nancy,"

Dayo's voice came through smoothly.

"Hi."

"How are you?"

"I'm good."

"You slept well?"

"Yes."

There was a short pause.

"I hope you're free today," he said.

Nancy glanced at Amaka, who was watching intensely.

"Yes, I'm free."

"Good. I'll send an Uber for you."

Nancy blinked. "An Uber?"

"Yes."

She hesitated. "Where to?"

"Relax," he replied calmly.

"The driver will bring you."

Nancy exchanged another look with Amaka.

"Okay," she said slowly.

"I'll send his details shortly," he added.

"Alright."

They ended the call.

The moment the line disconnected, Amaka screamed and shook Nancy's arm.

"Rich boy!"

Nancy laughed.

"You no go like relax? "

"He's sending Uber!" Amaka continued.

"See levels."

Nancy dropped the phone beside her.

"He didn't even tell me where."

"That's even better," Amaka said dramatically.

"Surprise."

Nancy leaned back.

Amaka looked at her carefully.

"So what's the plan?"

Nancy turned to her.

"What do you mean?"

"Is it a normal date… or…"

Amaka trailed off knowingly.

Nancy understood.

She exhaled slowly.

"I'm fine with anything."

Amaka raised an eyebrow.

Nancy continued calmly,

"I just want to come back with money."

Amaka screamed, hailing Nancy.

"That's my girl. I trust you!! "

Nancy picked up her phone again.

"If not, I'm blocking him."

"I don't have time for rubbish"
