Chapter 17 - The Knock

Zara stood still, her back close to the door.

Mr. Adeyemi remained where he was, calm, composed, like nothing unusual was happening. The key card still rested loosely between his fingers.

"You're nervous," he said.

Zara swallowed.

"Sir… I really think I should go."

"You're overreacting."

"I didn't come here for this."

He tilted his head slightly. "For what?"

She didn't answer.

He stepped closer.

"This is how things work, Zara. You're smart. You should understand that."

Her fingers tightened around her bag.

"I just want the job," she said.

"And I'm offering you more than just a job."

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

Zara took a small step sideways, trying to create distance without making it obvious.

He noticed.

"You don't need to be scared," he added.

"I'm trying to help you."

She shook her head slowly.

"This isn't help."

"You'll thank me later."

He moved closer again.

Zara's heartbeat thudded loudly in her chest.

She glanced briefly toward the door.

Then back at him.

"Sir, please—"

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Both of them froze.

The sound came again.

Knock. Knock.

Mr. Adeyemi's expression tightened slightly. He turned toward the door, clearly irritated.

"Yes?" he called.

"Room service, sir."

"I didn't order anything," he replied sharply.

"Sir, management asked me to confirm something with you."

"I'm busy. Leave it outside."

There was a pause.

Then the staff spoke again.

"Sir, I was told to get your confirmation directly. It's regarding the front desk record."

Mr. Adeyemi exhaled, annoyed.

Zara's eyes remained fixed on the door.

Her heartbeat quickened.

He hesitated for a second.

Then he walked toward the door.

Zara didn't move.

Her mind raced.

He reached the handle.

Opened it slightly.

The staff member stood outside holding a small notepad.

"Sir, sorry for the interruption. The front desk needs—"

That was all Zara needed.

She grabbed her bag.

And ran.

"Zara!"

Mr. Adeyemi called sharply.

She didn't stop.

She rushed past the doorway, past the confused staff, into the hallway. Her steps quick, uneven. Her breathing already heavy.

"Zara, come back," he called again.

She kept moving.

The hallway felt endless. Her heart pounded in her ears. Her palms were sweaty. Her legs felt weak but she kept going.

She reached the elevator and pressed the button repeatedly.

The doors opened.

She stepped in and hit the ground floor.

The doors closed.

Only then did she realize how fast she was breathing.

Her chest rose and fell quickly. Her hands trembled slightly.

The elevator descended slowly.

Each second felt too long.

When the doors finally opened, she stepped out immediately and walked straight past the lobby. She didn't look back. She didn't stop.

She pushed through the glass doors and stepped outside.

The air hit her face.

She kept walking.

Past the entrance.

Past the parked cars.

Until she found a quiet corner near the side of the building outside.

She sat down slowly.

Her hands rested on her knees.

She bent forward slightly, trying to steady her breathing.

Her chest still rose and fell rapidly.

She hadn't realized how tense her body had been until now.

She closed her eyes briefly.

The image of the room flashed in her mind.

The door.

The key.

His voice.

She exhaled slowly.

Then she reached for her phone.

Her fingers hesitated for a second before she dialed.

The phone rang.

"David…" Kamsi's voice was soft.

He leaned closer again caressing her soft tits with his tongue.

"You're still tense." He said

"I just…"

He brushed his fingers lightly along her arm.

"Relax."

She looked uncertain.

"You trust me, right?" he asked.

She nodded.

He made his way past her belly button, closing the distance between her both thighs. The room felt smaller. Warmer. Her thoughts blurred.

"Kamsi, I love you" he murmured as his wandering hands found her string underwear.

She swallowed. "David… I don't know."

"I just want to take things slowly."

He exhaled softly.

"Shhhhhhhhh"

He leaned closer again, his tone softer now.

"Say the word," he added, waiting to devour her.

Her heart beat faster.

She opened her mouth to respond—

Her phone rang.

Both of them paused.

Kamsi glanced at the screen.

Zara calling.

She hesitated, then picked up.

"Hello?"

"Are you home?" Zara's voice sounded slightly strained.

Kamsi frowned.

"No… I'm not. Are you okay? You sound—"

"I'm fine," Zara said quickly.

"You sure?"

"Yes. I just… I'll call you later."

The call ended.

Kamsi stared at the phone for a second.

David leaned closer again.

"Ignore it."

She shook her head slightly.

"I think I should go."

His expression changed. "Go?"

"Yes… it's getting late."

"You just got here."

"I know but—"

"This is exactly what I'm talking about," he said, irritation creeping into his voice.

"You're never available."

"David stop."

"You always pull away."

She sat up slowly.

"I just don't want to rush things."

He leaned back, frustrated.

"Rush what?"

"You know what I mean."

He exhaled sharply.

"This is why I disappear sometimes."

Her eyes softened.

"Can't you just love me like this?"

He didn't answer.

"Maybe when I'm ready… or when we're married…"

He laughed, but there was no humor in it.

"You're serious?"

"I just… I want it to mean something."

Silence filled the room.

She picked up her bag.

"I should go."

He stood up reluctantly.

They walked toward the door.

He opened it and followed her into the sitting room. The guys there barely looked up.

They reached the entrance.

He opened the main door.

"Text me when you get home," he said.

She nodded.

Then stepped outside.

The door closed behind her.

Kamsi exhaled slowly.

Her heart was still racing.
