Chapter 44 - No room for breaking

I saw her before she saw me.

Vanessa.

Standing near the entrance like she owned the place.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Perfectly fake.

I could have turned around.

Avoided her.

Pretended I didn't notice.

But something in me…

Didn't want to run anymore.

So I walked forward.

And right on cue—

She turned.

Our eyes met.

And the air changed instantly.

"So," she said slowly, her lips curving into a faint smile.

"You're Jessy."

Her tone wasn't friendly.

It wasn't even neutral.

It was sharp.

Measured.

"Yes."

I didn't look away.

That seemed to surprise her.

"I've heard about you," she continued.

I tilted my head slightly.

"From who?"

That made her smile widen just a little.

"Does it matter?"

"It does if you're trying to make a point."

A pause.

Small.

But important.

Because she hadn't expected that.

"I heard you've been… around," she said.

"Where exactly?" I asked calmly.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"You went to his house."

Straight to it.

I nodded.

"I was invited."

Her expression shifted.

Just for a second.

Then she laughed softly.

"Of course you were."

Silence.

"But you should be careful," she added, her voice lowering.

"Not every place you're invited to is meant for you."

There it was.

The insult.

Clear.

Intentional.

I felt it.

But this time…

It didn't crush me.

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

At the confidence that felt forced.

At the control she was trying too hard to hold.

Then I spoke.

"If that place wasn't meant for me," I said quietly,

"then why did I feel more welcome there than you do right now?"

Silence.

Her smile disappeared.

Completely.

And just like that—

The power shifted.

"You're bold," she said slowly.

"No," I replied.

"I'm just not scared of you."

That hit.

Hard.

Because it was true.

And she knew it.

Her eyes darkened.

"You should be."

"Why?" I asked calmly.

"Because you have money? Status? Or because you think being chosen makes you better?"

She froze.

And I saw it.

That crack.

Small.

But real.

"I'm not competing with you," I continued.

"And I'm not trying to take anything from you."

A pause.

Then—

"But don't talk to me like I'm less than you," I added softly.

"Because I'm not."

Complete silence.

The kind that makes everything louder.

Vanessa stared at me.

And for the first time—

She didn't have something to say.

A few steps away…

Elias watched.

He hadn't moved.

Hadn't interrupted.

But his eyes…

Were fixed on her.

Jessy.

And something in his chest shifted.

Because he had expected her to shrink.

To stay quiet.

To avoid conflict.

But she didn't.

She stood.

Calm.

Steady.

And strong in a way that didn't need noise.

A faint smile almost touched his lips.

Pride.

He didn't say it.

But he felt it.

Clearly.

Vanessa recovered quickly.

Of course she did.

Girls like her always did.

She let out a small laugh.

"You think you're special," she said.

I shook my head.

"No."

Another pause.

"I just know my worth."

That was the final blow.

Because there was nothing she could twist.

Nothing she could use.

Just truth.

And truth…

Is hard to fight.

She stepped closer.

Close enough for only me to hear.

"This isn't over."

I met her gaze.

"I didn't think it was."

Then I walked past her.

Not rushing.

Not shaking.

Just walking.

Like I hadn't just faced a storm.

Later…

"I heard."

I turned.

Elias.

Standing there.

Of course he knew.

"You were watching," I said.

"I was."

Silence.

"You didn't help."

"You didn't need it."

That hit differently.

I looked at him.

"And if I did?"

He stepped closer.

This time…

Closer than usual.

"Then I would have."

My breath caught slightly.

Because I believed him.

And that was dangerous.

Back at the house…

"I like Jessy."

Lia's voice filled the room.

Mrs. Laurent smiled softly.

"I know."

"She's nice."

"She is."

Lia looked up at Elias.

"Can she come again?"

Silence.

A small one.

But meaningful.

Elias looked at her.

Then away.

"Yes."

That answer came too easily.

And everyone noticed.

Amara smiled quietly.

Because everything was unfolding exactly how she expected.

Maybe even better.
