Chapter 99 - The Chamber of Sovereigns

The staircase spiraled deep beneath the Hall of Crowns.

Each step was carved from white stone, polished by centuries of silence.

No one spoke.

Only their footsteps echoed through the passage.

---

Dmitri glanced at the scanner he had adapted to the Sanctuary's energy.

"The deeper we go, the stronger the energy becomes."

Nikola looked ahead.

"And older."

---

After several minutes, the staircase ended before two towering silver doors.

Unlike every door they had seen before, these bore no locks.

Only a single symbol.

The crest of the First Family.

---

Caelum turned to Artyom.

"Only you can open it."

---

Artyom stepped forward.

The King's Seal on his finger began to glow.

As he placed his hand against the cold stone, the crest illuminated.

The doors opened without a sound.

---

Beyond them lay a circular chamber.

Its ceiling disappeared into darkness.

At the center stood a massive round table surrounded by twelve stone thrones.

Each throne carried the emblem of one of the Great Houses that had once served the First Family.

Only one throne remained untouched.

The throne at the head of the chamber.

---

Roman surveyed the room.

"A council chamber."

---

Lucien nodded.

"The Chamber of Sovereigns."

"It was here that the rulers and their allies decided the fate of nations."

---

Yelena traced her fingers over the edge of one throne.

"Everything is still intact."

---

Suddenly, crystals embedded in the walls flared to life.

A soft blue light filled the chamber.

Twelve translucent figures appeared, seated upon the ancient thrones.

Kings.

Queens.

Generals.

Scholars.

None spoke.

They simply watched.

---

Artyom instinctively took a step back.

"They're..."

---

"Memories," Elara said gently.

"Not spirits."

"The Sanctuary preserved the wisdom of those who came before."

---

One of the figures rose.

An elderly king with silver hair and calm eyes.

He looked directly at Artyom.

Then he bowed.

One by one, the remaining figures followed.

---

Even Roman lowered his gaze for a brief moment.

The weight of history filled the chamber.

---

The elderly king finally spoke.

His voice echoed like distant bells.

"To the last heir..."

"You inherit neither our throne nor our glory."

"You inherit our duty."

---

The images around the room changed.

Cities flourished.

Children laughed in peaceful streets.

Armies stood not to conquer, but to defend.

---

Artyom watched in silence.

"This is what they protected..."

---

Caelum smiled faintly.

"Power was never their purpose."

"People were."

---

Viktor looked at Artyom.

"That sounds familiar."

Artyom glanced at him, puzzled.

Viktor's expression softened.

"It's how you've always lived."

For the first time since entering the Sanctuary, Artyom felt that the burden on his shoulders was not just a legacy of blood.

It was a choice.

A choice to protect rather than rule.

The Chamber of Sovereigns had not crowned a king.

It had reminded an heir what a true ruler was meant to be.
