Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 39 — THE CORE

The clearing was silent.

Not peaceful silent.

Not calm silent.

But predatory silent — the kind of silence that meant the forest was holding its breath.

Soren did not like that.

He pointed at the hollow tree. "No. No no no. Whatever is glowing in there is bad. Glowing things are always bad. Except my fox. He's allowed to glow. Nothing else is allowed to glow."

The fox chirped, still perched on his shoulder, still tired from the fight.

Kael stepped forward cautiously. "We need to see what it is."

"I DON'T WANT TO SEE WHAT IT IS."

Aldric smirked. "Too bad."

Lira's frost‑wolf growled softly. "The Guardian was protecting it."

Soren clutched the fox. "That means it's dangerous."

Kael nodded. "Yes."

Soren stared at him. "WHY ARE WE GOING TOWARD IT THEN."

Kael didn't answer.

He just walked.

The Core Reveals Itself

Inside the hollow tree, nestled in the twisted roots, was a small orb.

No bigger than Soren's fist.

Pulsing with red light.

Alive.

Soren whispered, "I hate this place."

Kael crouched beside it. "It's a corruption core."

Lira's eyes widened. "A real one."

Aldric grinned. "Finally."

Soren slapped his arm. "STOP SAYING FINALLY."

The core pulsed again — a slow, rhythmic thrum that vibrated through the air.

The fox tensed.

Soren felt it too.

A pull.

A tug.

A whisper.

"Come closer."

Soren screamed. "NO. NO THANK YOU. I DON'T WANT TO COME CLOSER. I WANT TO GO HOME."

Kael frowned. "You heard that?"

Soren blinked. "YOU DIDN'T?!"

Lira shook her head. "No."

Aldric shrugged. "Nothing."

Soren pointed at the core. "IT TALKED TO ME."

Kael's expression sharpened. "Describe it."

"It said 'come closer.' Which is EXACTLY what evil things say before they eat you."

The fox chirped anxiously.

The Pull Gets Stronger

The core pulsed again.

Soren felt it in his bones.

A tug.

A pull.

A whisper.

"Touch."

Soren screamed. "NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. I'M NOT TOUCHING ANYTHING."

Kael grabbed his arm. "Then step back."

"I CAN'T. IT'S PULLING ME."

Lira gasped. "It's reacting to him."

Aldric muttered, "Of course it is."

Soren dug his heels into the ground. "HELP ME. I'M BEING DRAGGED BY A GLOWING EVIL MEATBALL."

The fox leapt from his shoulder and planted itself between Soren and the core, tails glowing fiercely.

The pull weakened.

Soren collapsed. "I hate this place."

Kael steadied him. "It's resonating with your bond."

Soren stared at him. "WHY DOES EVERYTHING RESONATE WITH ME. I DON'T WANT TO BE RESONATED WITH."

Lira whispered, "It might be reacting to your fox's light affinity."

Aldric added, "Or your panic."

Soren glared. "STOP MAKING FUN OF MY PANIC."

The Moment Soren Absolutely Should Have Walked Away

The core pulsed again.

This time, the fox's glow flickered.

Soren panicked. "NO. NO FLICKERING. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO FLICKER."

The fox chirped weakly.

Kael stepped forward. "We need to neutralise it."

Lira nodded. "Carefully."

Aldric cracked his knuckles. "Or violently."

Soren slapped him. "NO."

The core pulsed again — harder.

The fox stumbled.

Soren screamed. "OKAY THAT'S IT."

He rushed forward.

Kael shouted, "Soren—WAIT—"

Lira yelled, "DON'T TOUCH IT—"

Aldric barked, "YOU IDIOT—"

The fox chirped desperately.

Soren reached out.

And touched the core.

The Explosion of Not‑Good Things

Light exploded.

Not warm light.

Not comforting light.

But violent, searing, reality‑bending light.

Soren felt himself being pulled.

Not physically.

Not mentally.

Something deeper.

Images flashed.

A burning forest.

A shadowed figure.

A hand reaching toward him.

A voice whispering—

"Found you."

Soren screamed.

The world shattered.

Then went dark.

The Aftermath (Sort Of)

Soren woke up on the ground.

Kael was shaking him.

Lira was calling his name.

Aldric looked furious.

The fox was curled on his chest, glowing faintly.

Soren croaked, "I hate this place."

Kael exhaled in relief. "You're alive."

"I DON'T FEEL ALIVE."

Lira whispered, "You touched the core."

"I KNOW."

Aldric growled, "You idiot."

"I KNOW."

The fox nuzzled him.

Soren whispered, "Buddy… what happened."

The fox chirped softly.

Kael looked at the hollow tree. "The core is gone."

Soren blinked. "Gone?"

Lira nodded. "It vanished when you touched it."

Aldric crossed his arms. "Or it went into you."

Soren screamed. "WHAT."

The fox chirped.

And the forest pulsed again — faint, distant, but unmistakable.

Something had changed.

Something had followed him.

Something was awake.
