The forest didn't just tremble this time.
It shuddered.
Like something enormous had taken a breath beneath the earth.
Soren grabbed Kael's sleeve. "NO. NO MORE SHUDDERING. SHUDDERING IS WORSE THAN TREMBLING. TREMBLING IS NERVOUS. SHUDDERING IS EVIL."
Kael didn't answer.
He was staring ahead.
So was Lira.
So was Aldric.
So was the fox — its glow sharp, bright, almost defensive.
Soren followed their gaze.
And immediately regretted it.
The Guardian Appears
The corrupted tree split open.
Not cracked.
Not broke.
Split, like a ribcage opening.
Soren screamed. "NO. NO. TREES SHOULD NOT DO THAT. TREES SHOULD BE NICE. TREES SHOULD BE WOOD. TREES SHOULD NOT HAVE RIBCAGES."
From inside the hollow trunk, something crawled out.
At first, Soren thought it was a beast.
Then he thought it was a person.
Then he realised it was neither.
It was both.
A creature stepped into the clearing — tall, skeletal, its limbs too long, its body covered in bark‑like plating that pulsed with red veins. Its face was a mask of twisted wood, with hollow eyes glowing like embers.
Soren whispered, "I hate this place."
The fox growled — a sound Soren had never heard from him before.
Kael raised his spear. "Guardian."
Lira's eyes widened. "A corrupted one."
Aldric grinned. "Finally."
Soren slapped his arm. "STOP SAYING FINALLY."
The Guardian Moves
The creature tilted its head.
The sound was wrong — like wood snapping underwater.
Then it moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
It lunged at Kael.
Kael blocked with his spear, sparks flying.
Lira summoned a wall of ice.
Aldric punched the ground, flames erupting.
Soren ran in a circle. "I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO—"
The fox leapt from his shoulder.
Its tails crossed.
Light burst.
The Guardian recoiled, shrieking — a sound like a forest dying.
Soren screamed. "WHY DOES EVERYTHING HERE SHRIEK."
Kael shouted, "Soren! Direct him!"
"I DON'T KNOW HOW."
"You do."
"I DON'T."
"You do."
Lira called, "Trust your bond!"
Aldric yelled, "Stop panicking!"
Soren yelled back, "I CAN'T."
The fox chirped sharply — a command.
Soren froze.
Then inhaled.
Then exhaled.
"Okay," he whispered. "Okay. Buddy… flare again. Stronger."
The fox's glow intensified.
The Guardian staggered.
Kael struck its leg.
Lira froze its arm.
Aldric smashed its chest.
The Guardian shrieked again — louder, angrier.
Soren screamed. "STOP SHRIEKING. SHRIEKING IS RUDE."
The Guardian Evolves (Because Of Course It Does)
The creature's body pulsed.
Red veins spread across its bark‑skin.
Its limbs twisted further.
Its eyes burned brighter.
Soren pointed. "NO. NO EVOLVING. EVOLVING IS FOR CUTE THINGS. NOT FOR NIGHTMARES."
Kael shouted, "It's adapting!"
Lira gasped. "The corruption is accelerating!"
Aldric grinned. "Good."
Soren slapped him again. "STOP SAYING GOOD."
The Guardian lunged — this time at Soren.
Soren screamed. "NO THANK YOU."
The fox flickered in front of him, tails glowing like twin stars.
The Guardian's claw struck the light barrier the fox created — and cracked it.
Soren's heart stopped. "BUDDY—"
The fox chirped, strained but determined.
Kael yelled, "Soren! Command him!"
Soren's hands shook. "I don't know what to say!"
Lira shouted, "Say what you feel!"
Aldric yelled, "Not panic!"
Soren yelled, "THAT'S ALL I FEEL."
The Guardian raised its arm for another strike.
Soren inhaled sharply.
"Buddy—BLIND IT!"
The fox's tails crossed.
Light exploded.
The Guardian reeled back, shrieking.
Kael dashed forward, spear glowing.
Lira froze its legs.
Aldric shattered the ice with a flaming punch.
The Guardian collapsed.
The clearing fell silent.
Soren collapsed too. "I hate this place."
The fox hopped onto his chest and chirped weakly.
Soren hugged him. "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN."
The Aftermath
Kael approached. "You did well."
"I DID NOT."
"You did."
"I DIDN'T."
"You did."
Aldric muttered, "Both of you stop."
Lira knelt beside him. "The Guardian was protecting something."
Soren blinked. "Protecting WHAT."
Kael pointed at the hollow tree.
Inside, something glowed.
Something small.
Something pulsing.
Something alive.
Soren whispered, "I hate this place."
And the corrupted forest pulsed again — as if answering him.
