"Then explain it," he shot back. "Explain why Kaleb can't stop touching you. Why Cyrus let you sleep on him for three days. Why Rafayel looks at you like you're the only thing keeping him sane. Why I—"
He stopped again, his jaw working.
Why you what? my hands demanded.
"Why I fed your wolf," he said finally, the words dragging out of him like a confession. "Why I built you this room knowing you'll never live long enough to use it. Why I can't stop thinking about you even when I'm trying to plan your execution."
The silence that followed was deafening.
We stared at each other across the space between us—hunter and prey, god and human, two people trapped in something neither of us understood.
"So tell me, Aurora," he said quietly, and for the first time since I'd met him, Zayne sounded lost. "Are you doing this to us? Or is something else at play that neither of us can control?"
