My stomach flipped so hard my breath hitched from the mere expanse of the room I found myself in.
I had not yet begun to take it all in when Cheese bounded toward me. He leapt on me, tongue out and tail wagging with joy. Despite my smaller frame and bone-deep weakness, I withstood his weight while he slobbered me with kisses.
I opened my mouth, wanting nothing more than to tell him just how much I longed for our familiar, mundane haven. My legs shook from the exertion until the Scion behind me spoke.
"Down, boy," he ordered, softer than I thought possible.
Cheese bounced off me. I whirled to face Zayne, my confusion and shock apparent. When did that start? He gave me a measured expression before gesturing to the room around us.
I turned slowly, taking in what he'd done.
