Chapter 143 - Chapter One Hundred and Forty-three

The last of the guests had filtered out, leaving the backyard littered with the remnants of a joyous celebration. Exhausted but content, Chioma helped Louisa clear away the used plates and glasses. Andrew, sprawled on the couch after bidding Chisom and Daniel goodnight, scrolled through his phone, a faint smile playing on his lips.

The silence felt heavy after the lively celebration. Chioma stole a glance at Andrew, then turned her gaze to the window. A lone figure walked down the dimly lit street, the soft glow of a streetlamp illuminating his path. A pang of recognition shot through her. It was Daniel.

He wasn't alone, though. Chioma noticed Chisom, walking beside him. They flagged down a taxi, their laughter echoing faintly in the quiet night. A small smile touched Chioma's lips. She was happy that her best friend Chisom was Andrew's girlfriend. With a happy sigh, she turned back to help her mother with the dishes.

Daniel boarded the taxi with Chisom, relief washing over him as he settled into the cool interior. Though he had enjoyed chatting with friends and family at the party, the absence of Audrey cast a shadow over his night. He pulled out his phone, her picture filling the screen. The image of her radiant in the blush ball gown brought a bittersweet smile to his lips. He missed her laugh, her touch, everything about her. He longed to be dancing with her under fairy lights, not sitting in a taxi on his way home.

The taxi ride was short, the rhythmic bumps a lullaby against the backdrop of the city's nighttime hum. Daniel stole glances at Chisom, her head resting against the window, a peaceful expression on her face. He hesitated, unsure if this was the right time to bring up his woes.

Finally, as the taxi pulled up in front of their house, he blurted, 'I miss Audrey terribly.'

Chisom's eyes fluttered open, a hint of surprise in her gaze. 'Oh, big brother Daniel,' she said softly, her voice laced with sympathy. 'I can only imagine. But then, she only left to London for a wedding and will be back by tomorrow.'

Daniel stepped out of the taxi, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. 'It's not just that,' he admitted, his voice barely a whisper. 'It's...' he hesitated, searching for the right words. 'It's seeing everyone so happy at the party, coupled up and celebrating, that makes me feel...'

'Lonely?' Chisom finished gently, offering a small, understanding smile.

Daniel nodded, a lump forming in his throat. He felt a wave of gratitude for Chisom's empathy. 'Exactly,' he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Chisom squeezed his shoulder lightly. 'Listen,' she said, her voice firm yet kind. 'Just because everyone else seems coupled up doesn't mean you won't have your own chance to dance with Audrey. You and Audrey have something special, don't you?'

Daniel met her gaze, a flicker of hope igniting in his eyes. 'We do,' he affirmed, a small smile tugging at his lips.

'Then hold onto that,' Chisom advised. 'Distance can be temporary, but love that's real can last a lifetime. Audrey, I know won't leave you for a white man. I'm sure that she misses you too. Now, go call your girl and tell her you miss her.'

Daniel nodded again, a sense of resolve washing over him. He thanked Chisom for the pep talk, then walked towards his room, a renewed sense of purpose in his stride. Reaching his door, he pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over Audrey's picture.

A smile bloomed on Daniel's face as he tapped on Audrey's contact picture. The phone pressed cool against his ear as it rang, each unanswered tone stretching the seconds into an eternity. Finally, just as he considered leaving a voicemail, a warm, familiar voice filled his ear.

'Hey Daniel! How was the party?' Audrey's voice crackled slightly over the long-distance connection, but the sound was music to his ears. Relief washed over him like a tidal wave.

'Hey,' he replied, his voice thick with emotion. 'The party was…well, it was all right. But it wasn't the same without you with me.'

He could practically hear the smile in her voice. 'Aw, babe, I miss you too. Tell me all about it.'

Daniel spent the next hour recounting the highlights of the party—Andrew and Chisom's dancing, the delicious food, and catching up with old friends. He purposely avoided mentioning the pang of loneliness he had initially felt, not wanting to burden her.

Audrey, in turn, shared stories about the wedding, describing the beautiful ceremony in a historic church and the bustling reception that followed. She confided in him about the funny mishap with a spilled drink, her laughter tinkling down the line. As they talked, the weight of the night lifted, replaced by a warm sense of connection.

The conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with playful banter, inside jokes, and whispered promise or returning tomorrow. As the call neared its inevitable end, a comfortable silence settled between them.

'I miss you more than words can express, Audrey,' Daniel confessed, his voice a husky whisper.

'I miss you too, Daniel,' she replied softly. 'We'll be together again soon, and then we won't have to steal moments over the phone.'

A contented sigh escaped his lips. 'I can't wait to get married to you,' he said, his heart brimming with hope.

Audrey chuckled at his words.

They exchanged 'I love yous' before hanging up, a bittersweet feeling lingering in the air. Daniel cradled the phone for a moment, a ghost of Audrey's warmth still clinging to the device. He slipped it back into his pocket, a newfound lightness in his step.

The room didn't feel so empty anymore. The memory of Audrey's voice, filled with love and laughter, echoed in his mind. It reminded him that, even far apart, their bond was still strong. With a renewed sense of optimism, Daniel decided to make himself a cup of tea and pull out a book he had been meaning to read. Maybe tonight, curled up with a good book and the memory of Audrey's voice, wouldn't be so bad after all.
