Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 – The First Step Away

The house was too quiet.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that made every sound feel louder than it should be.

Xiaoyu stood near the door, her hand resting lightly on the handle.

She hadn't moved for ten minutes.

Maybe more.

Time felt strange when your entire life had just shifted.

"Try leaving."

His voice echoed in her mind.

Cold.

Confident.

Certain.

Like he already knew the outcome.

Her grip tightened.

"I'm not staying," she whispered.

This wasn't fear anymore.

This was decision.

She opened the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if expecting something—or someone—to stop her.

But nothing happened.

No alarms.

No footsteps.

No voice calling her name.

The hallway was empty.

The lights dim.

The air still.

She stepped out.

One step.

Then another.

Each movement felt heavier than the last.

Not because she was weak—

But because she knew this wasn't just walking away from a house.

She was walking into something unknown.

Something dangerous.

By the time she reached the front entrance, her heartbeat had steadied.

Not calm.

But controlled.

She placed her hand on the door and pushed it open.

The night air hit her instantly.

Cool.

Sharp.

Real.

For a moment—

She just stood there.

Breathing.

As if proving to herself that she could still move on her own.

Then—

She walked forward.

Behind her—

Inside the house—

A faint light flickered on.

Lu Shen stood by the window, watching.

Silent.

Unmoving.

"She left," Chen Wei said quietly from behind him.

Lu Shen didn't respond.

His gaze remained fixed on the gate.

On the small figure walking away.

"Do you want us to stop her?" Chen Wei asked.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

The answer was calm.

Immediate.

Chen Wei frowned slightly. "But sir, if she's being targeted—"

"I know."

"Then why—"

"Because she needs to understand something."

Lu Shen's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Running doesn't mean escaping."

Outside—

Xiaoyu walked quickly now.

Not running.

Not yet.

But fast enough to create distance.

Her mind was racing.

Where do I go?

Who can I trust?

The answer came immediately.

No one.

She reached the main road and flagged down a taxi.

The driver barely looked at her.

"Where to?"

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

"Anywhere busy."

The car moved.

City lights blurred past again.

But this time—

She wasn't watching them.

She was thinking.

Planning.

Trying to stay ahead.

She didn't notice the black car behind her.

Keeping distance.

Silent.

Patient.

Inside it—

A man watched.

Expression unreadable.

Phone in hand.

"She's moving," he said.

A voice answered from the other side.

"Alone?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Good."

Back in the taxi—

Xiaoyu felt it.

That feeling again.

The same one from the hospital.

Something was wrong.

She looked into the side mirror.

At first—

Nothing.

Just normal traffic.

Then—

She saw it.

A black car.

Same distance.

Same speed.

Her heart skipped.

No.

Maybe coincidence.

She looked again.

It was still there.

"Driver," she said quietly, "can you take a different route?"

The driver shrugged. "Sure."

He turned sharply into another street.

The car followed.

Her fingers tightened in her lap.

"Faster," she said.

The driver glanced at her through the mirror.

Something in her expression made him listen.

The car sped up.

So did the one behind.

Now—

There was no doubt.

They weren't following by chance.

They were following her.

Her breath grew shallow.

Her pulse loud.

This is what he meant…

"Running doesn't mean escaping."

The words came back.

Clearer now.

Sharper.

The car behind them moved closer.

Not hiding anymore.

Xiaoyu's heart pounded.

"What do we do…" she whispered.

The driver didn't answer.

Because suddenly—

Another car cut in from the side.

Blocking the road ahead.

Brakes slammed.

Tires screeched.

Everything stopped.

Silence—

For one second.

Then—

The doors of the cars ahead opened.

Figures stepped out.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Xiaoyu's breath caught.

This wasn't a warning anymore.

This was a trap.

And she had walked straight into it.
