Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – The Distance Between Them

The car door closed softly.

Too softly.

After everything that had just happened, the quiet felt wrong.

Xiaoyu leaned back against the seat, her body still tense despite the safety around her.

If this was safety.

Her hands rested in her lap.

Unsteady.

Faint bruises forming along her wrist.

She stared at them.

Not because they hurt.

But because they proved something.

She wasn't in control.

The engine started.

The car moved.

No one spoke.

Lu Shen sat beside her.

Close.

Too close.

But the distance between them felt wider than ever.

"You shouldn't have left."

His voice broke the silence.

Low.

Calm.

Controlled.

Xiaoyu didn't look at him.

"I know."

That answer wasn't what he expected.

A brief pause.

Then—

"Then why did you?"

She let out a quiet breath.

Still not looking at him.

"Because I needed to see it myself."

"See what?"

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"That you were right."

Silence returned.

But this time—

It wasn't empty.

It carried weight.

The car turned, city lights passing in soft streaks across the window.

"I thought…" she continued slowly,

"…maybe you were exaggerating."

A faint, bitter smile touched her lips.

"Or controlling."

His expression didn't change.

"And now?" he asked.

She finally turned her head.

Met his eyes.

Now there was something different in her gaze.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something more complicated.

"I think I underestimated everything."

He held her gaze.

Long.

Unwavering.

"Yes," he said.

No comfort.

No denial.

Just truth.

She looked away again.

"I almost got taken," she said quietly.

"I know."

"I couldn't fight them."

A pause.

"I know."

Each answer was the same.

Calm.

Certain.

Like he had already seen the outcome before it even happened.

Her chest tightened.

"That's the problem," she said.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You always know," she continued.

"You always see everything coming."

"And you don't tell me."

The accusation hung in the air.

He didn't respond immediately.

"I tell you what you need to know," he said finally.

"That's not the same thing."

"No," he agreed.

That caught her off guard.

She frowned slightly.

"Then why?" she asked.

A longer pause this time.

The car slowed slightly at a red light.

Then—

"Because information changes behavior."

She blinked.

"What?"

"If you knew everything," he continued,

"you would act differently."

"And that's bad?"

"Yes."

His answer came without hesitation.

"You're more predictable when you don't know."

Her chest tightened again.

"So I'm just… easier to control?"

His gaze shifted to her.

Sharp.

"Yes."

The honesty hit harder than any lie.

She let out a quiet, humorless laugh.

"At least you're honest."

"I don't lie unless necessary."

She turned fully toward him now.

"And was all of this necessary?"

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it carried something deeper.

He didn't answer right away.

For the first time—

There was hesitation.

Small.

But real.

"…Yes."

She stared at him.

Then slowly shook her head.

"I don't know if I should believe you."

"That doesn't change anything."

His tone didn't shift.

And that—

That was what frustrated her the most.

He wasn't trying to convince her.

He wasn't trying to fix anything.

He was just… stating facts.

Like her feelings weren't part of the equation.

"Do you even care?" she asked suddenly.

The question came out before she could stop it.

Silence filled the car again.

Different this time.

He looked at her.

Really looked.

"About what?"

Her throat tightened slightly.

"About what happened to me."

A beat.

Then—

"Yes."

Simple.

Too simple.

Her brows furrowed.

"That's it?"

"What do you want me to say?"

She opened her mouth—

Then stopped.

Because she didn't know.

Did she want comfort?

An apology?

Emotion?

Something real.

Anything real.

But he wasn't giving it.

And maybe—

That was who he was.

The car finally stopped.

They had arrived.

The gates opened slowly.

Familiar.

Cold.

Controlled.

His world.

Again.

The car came to a halt.

Neither of them moved immediately.

Then—

He spoke.

"You're not leaving again."

Her eyes snapped to him.

"That's not your decision."

"It is now."

Her jaw tightened.

"You don't get to lock me in."

"I don't need to."

A pause.

"You've already seen what happens outside."

Silence.

That hit.

Because it was true.

And she hated it.

"I won't run," she said finally.

His gaze didn't leave hers.

"Good."

"But don't think that means I trust you."

Another pause.

Then—

"That's fine."

Again.

Too calm.

She exhaled slowly.

"I don't understand you," she admitted.

"You don't need to."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"That's the problem."

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Then she opened the door.

Stepped out.

Her legs were still weak.

But she forced herself to walk.

Inside the house—

Everything looked the same.

But she didn't feel the same.

Because now she knew—

This wasn't just a contract.

This wasn't just protection.

This was something else.

Something deeper.

More dangerous.

And she was already too far in.

Behind her—

Lu Shen watched quietly.

His expression unreadable.

But his gaze—

Didn't leave her for a second.
