Zander and Harlan walked toward the room Xavier had personally chosen for himself and Asher.
As they reached the door, Zander patted Harlan's shoulder and lowered his voice.
"Good luck, man. I'm rooting for you. And if it doesn't work out... well, hope isn't completely lost."
A grin spread across his face before he quickly turned away.
"Wait!" Harlan called after him.
His heart immediately began pounding.
"Don't leave me, Zander! What if this doesn't work? What if my plan is terrible?"
For the first time since agreeing to this madness, doubt crashed into him.
Maybe he shouldn't have listened to Zander.
Maybe this was a mistake.
Unfortunately for him, before running away, Zander had already knocked on the door.
The handle turned.
And there stood Xavier.
The moment their eyes met, Harlan's courage nearly evaporated.
Xavier wasn't smiling.
He wasn't angry either.
His face was completely blank, which somehow felt far more terrifying.
