"The gods have given us meat and darkness. We must offer sacrifice to him three days from now." An elder whispered to the Chief.
The Chief nodded approvingly. "We let them get comfortable. Once it late into the night, they bring them out to cook."
"Announce to the women folks. The meat will be prepared by morning." Another elder said.
They were referring to Jenna and her companions as meat.
...
Tina's brother woke up some time later to find Jenna sitting cross-legged on the mat beside him.
Tina was still sleeping, but peacefully now. He checked on her, her body cold but cocooned under a thick woolen blanket pulled up to her neck.
As for him, he was dressed in a simple handwoven loose shirt and pants, the fabric soft against his skin.
"You're awake," Jenna said without opening her eyes.
He moved closer, mimicking her cross-legged position, glancing around the small hut. Mud walls, a straw roof, and a lamp sitting on a mud table across from them.
