Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Commander Who Walks the Battlefield

The demon army did not advance that morning.

The vast black tide outside Ashenfall remained… still.

Yet the silence was heavier than any battle.

Because something had changed.

A Movement in the Demon Camp

At the center of the demon army stood the command ridge.

Eight thousand demon generals waited in disciplined formation.

Below them stretched the endless mass of soldiers—demons, corrupted beasts, and war creatures.

But none moved.

All eyes were fixed on one place.

The black carriage.

For days it had remained sealed.

A symbol of command.

A presence no one approached.

Then—

The carriage door opened.

Slowly.

Dark mist spilled onto the ground like smoke flowing across water.

From within stepped a tall figure.

Armor black as obsidian.

A long cloak dragging across the dust.

Two curved horns rose from his temples like blades carved from night.

His eyes burned a cold violet.

Demon Commander Var'Khal had entered the battlefield.

Every demon immediately knelt.

Thousands of heads lowered.

Even the demon generals bowed deeply.

Because this was not merely a commander.

This was one of the Abyss Generals of the Demon Empire.

A being who had survived three Demon Century Wars.

The Weight of Presence

Var'Khal walked slowly across the ridge.

He did not raise his voice.

Yet the entire army felt his presence.

It was like standing beneath a collapsing mountain.

One of the generals spoke carefully.

"Commander… Phase Two infiltration failed."

Var'Khal's expression did not change.

"The objective was not assassination."

The general hesitated.

"Then…?"

"Observation."

Var'Khal looked toward the distant walls of Ashenfall.

The city looked small from this distance.

Fragile.

Yet it had held against two waves.

And inside it—

Something interesting existed.

"Dragon Vessel," he murmured.

His lips curved slightly.

"Unexpected."

Inside Ashenfall

On the southern wall, Lin Tianren stood with Han Yueqing.

The air was strange.

Heavy.

The battlefield felt different.

Han narrowed his eyes.

"They're moving."

Lin followed his gaze.

Across the plains—

A single figure was walking toward the city.

Not riding.

Not surrounded by soldiers.

Walking.

Alone.

Even from miles away the pressure could be felt.

Han's hand slowly tightened around his sword.

"That…"

He exhaled slowly.

"…is not a normal commander."

The Demon Army Parts

As Var'Khal walked forward, the demon army opened before him like a tide splitting around a stone.

No soldiers approached him.

No generals followed.

This was not a charge.

This was a statement.

Each step he took felt deliberate.

Measured.

Calm.

Behind him, tens of thousands of demons waited silently.

Watching.

The Beast Queen Appears

At the highest tower of the Beast Queen Sect, a silver figure stepped forward.

The Beast Queen.

Her eyes were cold.

Her expression unreadable.

She looked toward the approaching figure.

Their gazes met across miles of battlefield.

For several seconds—

Neither moved.

Two commanders measuring each other.

The Beast Queen spoke quietly.

"He finally came himself."

Behind her, elders gathered.

One of them whispered nervously.

"That aura… he might be a Half-Step Demon Lord."

Another elder muttered.

"If he personally enters the battlefield… the war escalates."

The Beast Queen's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Yes."

"That is exactly what he intends."

A Conversation Across the Battlefield

Var'Khal stopped when he reached the halfway point between the armies.

Still far from the wall.

Yet close enough that powerful cultivators could hear him.

He looked up at Ashenfall.

Then he spoke.

His voice was calm.

Yet it echoed across the entire battlefield.

"Humans."

The word carried no anger.

No hatred.

Only quiet authority.

"You have resisted well."

The demon army remained silent.

The human side did not respond.

Var'Khal continued.

"This city has already survived two waves."

He paused.

"Few cities manage that."

On the wall, soldiers exchanged uneasy looks.

Was he… praising them?

Then his eyes moved slightly.

Searching.

Until they landed on one person.

Lin Tianren.

Even from far away—

Lin felt the gaze.

It was like being locked under a predator's attention.

Var'Khal spoke again.

"Dragon Vessel."

The battlefield went silent.

Many people did not understand the meaning.

But Lin did.

The Beast Queen did.

Han Yueqing did.

The Demon Commander smiled faintly.

"So you survived the infiltration."

Pressure

The sky darkened slightly.

Not from clouds.

From aura.

Var'Khal released only a fraction of his cultivation.

Yet the pressure rolled across the battlefield like a tidal wave.

Weak soldiers on the wall nearly fell to their knees.

Even some cultivators struggled to breathe.

Han whispered through clenched teeth.

"Nascent Soul…?"

The Beast Queen answered from behind them.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"Higher."

For the first time since the war began—

Real fear spread among the defenders.

The Warning

Var'Khal looked across the city once more.

Then he spoke his final words.

"Prepare yourselves."

"Because the Third Wave…"

His violet eyes burned.

"…begins tomorrow."

Behind him—

The demon drums finally sounded.

One strike.

Then another.

The massive demon army began to move again.

Slow.

Disciplined.

Endless.

Var'Khal turned away from the city.

Returning toward the demon ranks.

But before disappearing into the army, he glanced back once more.

Directly at Lin Tianren.

A silent promise.

On the Wall

The silence after he left was heavier than battle.

Han finally spoke.

"That monster…"

Lin's eyes were steady.

"He wasn't here to attack."

The Beast Queen nodded.

"He came to look."

"To measure us."

Lin looked across the plains where the demon army was now reorganizing.

"They're confident."

The Beast Queen answered quietly.

"They have reason to be."

In the distance—

The war drums continued.

Slow.

Rhythmic.

Like a heartbeat.
