Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: Nine Tails Ascendant — Beast Evolution

The battlefield had already crossed well past the point of horror. Mountains of demon corpses burned across the plains outside Ashenfall, demonic blood flowing through the cracked earth in what looked increasingly like black rivers rather than scattered stains.

The war hadn't slowed despite the scale of it. If anything, it had grown considerably more violent since Lin Tianren revealed the Sovereign Dragon Manifestation. The demons had stopped treating him like an unusually dangerous soldier somewhere in the last exchange. Now they treated him like a threat that needed erasing immediately, before he did any more damage to their ranks.

The remaining seven generals stopped hesitating entirely and attacked together, seven terrifying auras exploding outward at once, darkening the sky above the battlefield. One raised a colossal spear forged from crystallized bone. Another summoned a storm of demonic lightning. A third opened a massive gravity field crushing everything within fifty meters of its center.

Seven Gold Rank powers unleashed simultaneously, and the battlefield shattered under the combined weight of it. Even the human cultivators watching from the wall felt their hearts tighten at the sight.

Han Yueqing's grip on his sword hardened. "Seven Gold Rank generals at once," he muttered, unable to finish the thought properly. Even he wouldn't have casually walked into a storm like that.

Lin Tianren stood at its center regardless, golden dragon aura blazing, sword raised. Beside him, his fox stood as well — the same small silver companion that had fought beside him since a quiet trial in the Inner Grove weeks ago, its fur now stained with blood, its breathing heavy from strain that had long since passed reasonable limits.

It didn't retreat despite the exhaustion. It had already fought well past what should have been possible for it tonight.

The demon generals had already realized something important about the fight's actual weak point. They stopped targeting Lin Tianren directly. Three of them turned toward the fox instead.

"Kill the beast!" one roared. Demonic chains shot forward like living snakes. Another unleashed a massive shockwave aimed directly at the small creature. A third moved like a shadow, too fast for most eyes to track properly.

Lin Tianren's eyes widened slightly at the coordinated shift. He understood immediately what they'd figured out. The beast contract ran both ways — if the fox died, his own combat capability would collapse alongside it.

"Fox!" He moved instantly, but three generals had already sealed the space around it before he could close the distance.

The chains slammed into the ground. The shockwave detonated. The shadow blade descended, and the fox had no room left to escape any of it.

For a brief moment, it froze — not from fear, but from exhaustion, its spiritual core nearly empty after everything it had already burned through tonight, its illusion flames spent past what should have been sustainable.

When the attacks closed in regardless, it didn't run. It stepped forward instead, placing itself directly between the incoming strikes and Lin Tianren, baring its teeth despite the nine tails behind it flickering almost transparent from how depleted it had become.

Inside its spiritual core, something cracked open.

Lin Tianren felt it instantly through the contract, their souls resonating with an intensity that hadn't existed between them until this exact moment. Pain. Exhaustion. Determination. Everything the fox carried, he felt directly, and everything he carried in return, it felt just as clearly.

Their bond had stopped being master and beast somewhere over the last several minutes. They were partners now, war companions in every sense that mattered.

Deep inside his Dragon Heart Core, the golden bloodline reacted again, a pulse of ancient authority surging outward through the contract itself. The fox's eyes widened as the energy reached it — not ordinary spiritual energy, but sovereign dragon Qi, ancient and wild and unmistakably dominant.

Its beast core trembled violently under the sudden influx.

The first demonic attack struck in the same instant. Chains wrapped around the fox's body, the shockwave detonated, dust and flame erupting across the battlefield hard enough that it disappeared entirely from view.

One general laughed coldly at the sight. "Pathetic."

Then the chains began to crack. A low sound echoed from within the settling smoke, not a growl, something deeper and considerably older than anything that should have existed inside a Silver Rank contract beast. The ground trembled, and a wave of golden energy burst outward, shattering the demonic chains instantly, pushing the shockwave itself back the way it had come.

From the smoke, a new figure stepped forward.

The fox had changed completely. Its body had grown to nearly the size of a war horse, silver fur transformed into radiant white-gold, nine massive tails spreading behind it like banners woven from light rather than fur. Each tail burned with genuine spiritual flame now. Its eyes glowed with an intelligence that hadn't been quite this present even during its earlier Gold Rank breakthrough.

An ancient beast aura expanded across the entire battlefield, heavy enough that even the demon generals froze at the sight of it.

"A sovereign spirit beast," one whispered, disbelief threading through the words.

The fox stepped forward calmly despite the reaction it was causing, its nine tails moving slowly through the air as illusion flame ignited across the field — no longer simple illusion, though. Reality itself began to distort under it, the battlefield splitting into mirrored landscapes, hundreds of fox afterimages appearing at once, each one carrying killing intent heavy enough to feel genuine rather than illusory.

Lin Tianren looked at his companion, and for the first time since their contract had formed, it looked back with equal authority rather than deference. Not a subordinate anymore. A partner, standing beside him rather than behind him.

Their bond ignited fully, dragon aura and beast aura fusing together into something considerably larger than either had managed alone, golden lightning spreading across the battlefield in response.

Han Yueqing whistled softly from the wall. "That's not fair."

"So the beast ascended as well," Zhao Lianhua said, a faint smile touching her mouth.

The Beast Queen watched in silence, her voice barely audible when she finally spoke. "A sovereign beast bond. Rare even in the oldest recorded eras."

The demon generals finally understood something considerably more unsettling than the loss of their first comrade. This wasn't one dangerous opponent anymore. This was a dragon sovereign and a nine-tailed spirit king fighting in perfect coordination.

One roared in fury. "Kill them now, before this gets worse!"

Four generals charged simultaneously. This time, the fox moved first.

Its nine tails slammed into the ground together. "Domain," it seemed to announce, though the word carried through resonance rather than actual speech. "Thousand Fox Mirrors."

The battlefield shattered into layered illusion, hundreds of Lin Tianrens appearing across the field alongside hundreds of fox spirits, the generals suddenly finding themselves surrounded by countless targets that all read as equally real. Their attacks struck nothing but empty air. Their senses twisted under the weight of an illusion domain that even Gold Rank perception struggled to break through cleanly.

In that moment of confusion, Lin Tianren moved, Dragon Manifestation blazing behind him, the Golden Heaven Sword cutting through the field like lightning finding ground. One general fell instantly. Another lost an arm to a strike he never saw coming. A third was thrown across the battlefield by a single tail strike that carried more force than his own war hammer had managed all night.

The demon army panicked visibly as the tide of the fight turned entirely.

Far behind the army, Var'Khal watched everything unfold with the same calm attention he'd carried since first stepping onto the ridge, his violet eyes gleaming with something that had shifted from interest into genuine fascination.

"A dragon sovereign," he murmured. "And a nine-tailed beast king." A slow smile spread across his face. "Interesting."

Because this war had never really been about numbers to begin with. It was about awakening something ancient, something powerful enough to be worth the considerable cost of provoking it into showing itself fully.

When the dust finally settled, three demon generals lay dead. Two more sat heavily injured, unable to continue fighting at their previous pace. The remaining survivors retreated several hundred meters, and for the first time since the third wave had begun in earnest, the demon army hesitated openly.

Lin Tianren stood at the center of the battlefield, dragon aura still blazing steady around him. Beside him, the nine-tailed sovereign fox swayed its tails calmly, exhaustion visible but no longer threatening to overwhelm it the way it had only minutes earlier.

The battlefield wind carried the scent of blood and fire across both armies. But one truth had become unmistakable to everyone watching from either side of the field.

The war had changed shape tonight. The demons had provoked something into awakening fully, and it was standing firmly on the human side of the line.
