Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Silence Before the Storm

The infirmary was a sanctuary of white silk and false security. For two days, Lin Wei played the part of the recovering prodigy, keeping his breathing shallow and his eyes clouded. Under the influence of the Concealment Mask of the Nameless, the terrifying density of his Foundation Establishment core was hidden beneath the facade of a peak 9th Layer Qi Gathering cultivator. To the healers, he was a genius who had overtaxed his potential; to the Council, he was a mystery with a ticking clock.

"System," Lin Wei thought, staring at the jade mosaic on the ceiling. "Finalize the Level 3 Integration of Absolute Equilibrium. I can feel the Phoenix and Ice cores scratching at the mask. They don't like being hidden."

[Eternal Odyssey System]

Action: Integrating Absolute Equilibrium (Level 3).

Status: 88% Complete...

Effect: Elemental Friction is now 40% more efficient. Void-Core stability increased.

Remaining Points: 250.

The air in the room suddenly chilled, then simmered. Lin Wei didn't have to look at the door to know who it was. The rhythmic, heavy thud of boots announced Captain Feng, though the man's aura felt ragged, as if he had been fighting a war of his own in the city streets.

Feng entered and sat heavily on a stool by the bed. He looked older than he had three days ago. "The North has heard the news, Wei'er. Your father sent a messenger. He didn't send congratulations. He sent a single word: 'Autumn.'"

Lin Wei's eyes sharpened. Autumn. In the Lin Clan's private code, it meant the harvest was over, and the fields were being burned to ash. It was a command to flee before the frost took everything.

"The Emperor arrives tomorrow for the ceremony," Feng whispered, leaning in. "They're calling it the 'Gilded Commendation.' They want to give you a medal, but the docks are crawling with Imperial Inquisitors. They aren't looking for Shadow Cultists anymore. They're looking for anyone with 'anomalous' spiritual roots."

"They're looking for the Seal," Lin Wei corrected, sitting up. The silk of his infirmary robes rustled against his skin, which now felt as hard as polished marble. "They know the jailer is in the building. They just don't know which room he's in."

"What's the plan?" Feng asked, his hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of his blade.

"We play their game," Lin Wei said, a cold, orange light flickering in the depths of his violet eye. "If the Emperor wants a ceremony, I'll give him one. But I'm not going to the stage as a student. I'm going as a distraction."

"System, scan the immediate vicinity for the metallic-red frequency. Is the Shadow still in the walls, or did I kill the only host?"

[Scan Active...] [Detection: Trace amounts found in the infirmary's ventilation. The 'Siphon' is still delivering micro-doses of corruption.]

[New Alert: High-energy signature detected approaching the South Gate. Identity: The First Prince, Lin Jue. Realm: Peak Foundation Establishment.]

Lin Wei's jaw tightened. The First Prince. The "Golden Lion" of the Empire and a direct rival to any potential "True Heir." If the Prince were here, the ceremony wasn't a reward—it was an execution disguised as an accolade.

"Feng, get out of the city," Lin Wei commanded, his voice gaining that dual-toned resonance. "Take whatever is left of our guards and head for the Ironwood Pass. If I'm not there in four days, tell my father the Seal has been passed."

"I won't leave you to face the Crown alone," Feng protested.

"You aren't leaving me," Lin Wei said, a faint, violet frost creeping across the floorboards. "You're making sure there's a home left to return to. Go."

After Feng departed, Lin Wei stood up, shedding the infirmary robes for the simple black-and-violet silks of the Lin Clan. He felt the 1,000-point power surge still humming in his bones. He was a Foundation Establishment expert in a Qi Gathering mask, standing in the heart of a trap set by the most powerful man in the world.

He reached into the System Shop one last time before the ceremony.

"Buy the Fragment of the First Key. I don't care about the cost."

[Warning: Insufficient Points. 'Fragment of the First Key' requires 800 Points. Current Balance: 250.]

[Alternative: Purchase 'Void-Whisper' (Temporary Buff).

Cost: 200 Points.

Effect: Allows you to speak to the Siphon itself for 60 seconds.]

"The Siphon," Lin Wei whispered, a dangerous smile spreading across his face. "The city's own heart. If I can't hide from the Emperor, I'll make sure he can't see anything but the dark."

He confirmed the purchase.

[Remaining Points: 50.]

As the sun began to set over the Capital, casting long, emerald shadows through the jade array, Lin Wei walked toward the Great Plaza. The bells were ringing, announcing the arrival of the Imperial Carriage. The hunt was over, and the war was about to begin. The jailer wasn't running anymore. He was going to meet the King.
