Chapter 188: Totodile
After capturing Houndour, Ash's group continued their journey toward Goldenrod City.
Today, as they passed by a clear river, Misty suggested camping. In reality, it was because she hadn't let her Pokémon swim in a long time and was afraid they would get restless.
After the group set up camp, Ash took out his fishing rod to fish.
"Huh? Ash, you know how to fish too!" Brock looked at Ash in surprise.
Ash replied casually, "I know a 'ton' about it."
Hearing this, Misty put away the fishing rod she had just taken out halfway.
She was only joking; she had witnessed Ash's fishing style before. Others had to play the fish to reel it in, but with Ash, once a fish bit the hook, he would just give a powerful yank, and any fish would be hauled up.
Most importantly, even if he didn't catch what he wanted, he could just dive into the water and grab it by hand.
She decided not to humiliate herself.
"Misty, aren't you going to fish?" Brock asked, looking at Misty with confusion.
Misty replied awkwardly, "Forget it, I'll just watch."
"What's that supposed to mean? Is Ash really that good at fishing?"
Brock, never having witnessed Ash's methods, was quite puzzled.
"It's more than just good; you'll see in a moment, Brock," Misty said mysteriously.
At this moment, Ash had already chosen his fishing spot. He put down his small stool, skillfully baited the area, cast his line, and started fishing.
He cast his line, and in less than three seconds, a Magikarp was forcefully yanked up.
Over the next few minutes, Ash transformed into a temporary master of releasing Pokémon. Every Magikarp pulled up was fed a Water-type energy cube and thrown back into the river.
This scene left Brock dumbfounded. It was simply too absurd. He counted that in less than five minutes, fifteen Magikarp had been hooked—an average of one every twenty seconds—and all were pulled up without any hesitation.
"That's strange. Is this river only full of Magikarp?"
Having caught fifteen Magikarp in a row, Ash was also puzzled.
His Aura told him that there were other Water-type Pokémon in the river besides Magikarp.
Of course, his purpose in fishing wasn't to catch Water-type Pokémon, but to catch regular fish to eat. Yet, only Magikarp were biting, which was ridiculous.
When in doubt, move. After changing locations, Ash cast his line again.
Three seconds later, a figure different from a Magikarp took the bait.
Ash excitedly jerked the fishing rod, and a small blue crocodile was pulled up.
Yes... that's right, what was hooked this time was a Totodile, one of the Johto starter Pokémon.

"Wani Wani~"
The Totodile landed in front of Ash, dancing happily.
"Could this Totodile be..."
This familiar dance reminded Ash of that little guy who loved to dance, which idiot had captured in the original series.
"So cute!"
Misty, who was watching from the sidelines, became very excited when she saw the Totodile.
"Oh, this Totodile is very active! It dances so happily," Brock also exclaimed.
"Alright, Totodile, I'm going to capture you! Eevee, use Take Down!" Ash shouted.
Eevee lunged toward the Totodile, headbutting forward. Seeing Eevee charging, the Totodile calmly danced to the side to dodge.
"Wani Wani~"
"Eevee, use Swift!"
Eevee, feeling a bit annoyed, launched a star-shaped beam attack. The Totodile used Water Gun to counter it.
The Water Gun neutralized two waves of Swift attacks, and the Totodile narrowly dodged the third and fourth waves with its dance moves.
"Not bad! I want to capture you even more now!"
Ash liked the Totodile more and more for being able to dodge two of Eevee's moves.
"Pikachu, it's your turn. Use Thunderbolt!"
"Pika!"
Pikachu unleashed two bolts of lightning, one after the other, completely blocking the Totodile's escape route.
After the Thunderbolt hit, Ash threw the Lure Ball that Mr. Kurt had crafted earlier.
"Ding! Congratulations to the host for capturing Totodile. Reward: 3,000 points, Master-level Dance skill."
"???"
Hearing about another special skill, Ash was stunned. So, this Totodile was just a performance pet?
Oh well, since this little guy likes to dance so much, he would try his best not to let it evolve. He would train it well and consider it preparation for the Grand Festival.
Forms like Croconaw and Feraligatr, if paired with these happy dance moves, would be an eyesore. Ash couldn't even bear to look at it, let alone anyone else.
After capturing the Totodile, Ash gave up on the idea of continuing to fish. Just as the group was planning to set off again, the Poliwag that Misty had previously captured evolved into a Poliwhirl.
"Misty, congratulations!" Ash congratulated her.
Misty looked at the Poliwhirl in bewilderment. "I didn't do anything, but it just evolved. How strange!"
"There's nothing strange about it. Pokémon evolution is uncontrollable. Perhaps the Poliwag was in a good mood after swimming all afternoon and just evolved on its own," Brock speculated.
Before the sun set, Ash's group resumed their journey and arrived at a Pokémon Center to stay for the night.
The next morning.
Well-rested, Ash's group had just walked out of the Pokémon Center when they bumped into a boy holding a Growlithe.
"Are you okay?" Brock asked the boy.
"What happened? Why are you so panicked?" Misty asked with confusion.
"I lost in a Pokémon battle," the boy said, looking a bit dejected.
"So, are you planning to take your Pokémon for treatment?"
"Yes, that opponent was too strong."
"Interesting. Where is this opponent you're talking about?" Ash asked.
"He is on the bridge at the top of the mountain."
Then, Ash's group headed toward the top of the mountain.
Before long, the group arrived at a suspension bridge.
Brock took a look and said, "It doesn't look like anyone is here!"
"No, look over there, Brock."
Ash pointed in another direction.
A beautiful woman was standing on the edge of the cliff, staring at something.
Seeing the beautiful woman, Brock immediately rushed over. "Beautiful lady, hello, my name is Brock..."
"My name is Miki," the woman responded softly.
"Oh, what a cute name. Come, come, this place could be dangerous at any time; let me accompany you on the road!" Brock said with a fawning tone.
"Um, may I ask if you have any Fire-type Pokémon?" Miki asked.
Brock nodded subconsciously.
