Chapter 36 - Shopping II

I am tearfully grateful by the time Calista is done with her defense. 

A lump forms in my throat so thick I can barely swallow; I want to hug her, to thank her for standing in the gap when I felt so small. But I remain speechless, my mind darting between numbing surprise and the strange spark of a first friendship. 

She leads me through the rows of stalls until we reach a small, vibrant table draped in woven hemp. Friendship bracelets of every color imaginable spill across the surface. The woman selling them smiles at us—a real, genuine smile that reaches her eyes, unlike the strained, terrified masks we've been encountering all morning.

"A good thing I'm seeing here…" she says softly, her eyes flickering to our hands, which are still joined. "A good thing indeed. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Princess."
