Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Secret They Keep

The night was quiet.

Too quiet.

Moonlight poured through the tall royal window, spreading across the stone floor in soft silver patterns. It touched the edges of furniture, the walls, even the heavy curtains—turning the king's chamber into something calm, almost peaceful.

But peace was only on the surface.

Inside the room, the air felt heavy.

Still.

Unspoken.

A fire burned in the large fireplace, cracking softly as wood shifted and collapsed into glowing embers. The sound filled the silence, but it did not break it. If anything, it made the silence feel deeper.

King Ryan sat near the fire.

His face was tired.

Not the tiredness of one night—but of many nights that had carried the same thoughts, the same fears, the same burden.

Across from him stood Queen Natalie.

She had not moved for a long time. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her chest, fingers pressed together as if holding back something inside her.

Neither of them spoke.

Because they already knew what the other was thinking.

Finally, Natalie broke the silence.

"She asked me today," she said softly.

Her voice was low, careful, as if even speaking too loudly might make the walls listen.

Ryan did not look at her immediately.

Instead, he stared into the fire.

"I know," he replied after a moment.

"She asked me this morning too."

A pause.

Then he added quietly, "She is growing restless." She will never stop asking.

Natalie lowered her gaze.

"She always was curious," she said. "But now… it feels different."

Ryan finally leaned back in his chair and rubbed his forehead slowly.

"She is seventeen," he said.

"And she is starting to question everything we built around her."

The fire crackled.

A piece of wood split sharply.

Natalie flinched slightly, then exhaled.

"How long can we keep doing this?" she asked.

Her voice trembled at the end.

"How long can we hide the truth from her?"

Silence returned.

But this time, it was heavier.

Ryan's expression hardened slightly.

"As long as we must," he said firmly.

Natalie looked up at him.

"Ryan… she is our daughter."

Her voice broke just a little.

"Doesn't she have the right to know who she is?"

The king closed his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them again, they were filled with something deeper than authority.

Fear.

And sorrow.

"If she learns too soon," he said slowly, "it will not give her answers."

"It will destroy her."

Natalie's hands tightened.

"You say that every time," she whispered.

"But what are we waiting for exactly?"

Ryan stood up and walked closer to the fire.

The flames reflected in his eyes.

For a moment, he looked less like a king… and more like a man carrying something far too heavy.

"The mark," he said quietly.

Natalie went still.

Even the fire seemed to quiet for a moment.

"It is not just a symbol," Ryan continued.

"It is power."

A long pause followed.

Then he added, "Dangerous power."

Natalie turned her face slightly away.

"I know that," she said softly.

"But she is not dangerous."

Ryan shook his head slowly.

"You don't understand."

His voice grew lower.

"We do not know what she is capable of yet."

Another silence.

This one longer.

He continued, "The mark has not fully awakened."

"And until it does, we cannot predict what she will become."

Natalie's voice turned faint.

"So we are afraid of our own child…"

Ryan looked at her sharply.

"No."

His voice softened immediately.

"We are afraid of what others will do when they see her."

Natalie looked down.

The firelight flickered across her face, casting soft shadows under her eyes.

Ryan continued.

"There are people in this world who would not see her as a girl."

"They would see a weapon."

"A source of power."

"A prize."

He clenched his fist slightly.

"And there are worse people than that."

Natalie swallowed.

"The council?" she asked quietly.

Ryan did not answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Natalie closed her eyes.

"So that is why she cannot leave," she said.

Ryan nodded slowly.

"If she steps outside these walls too soon, she will not just see the world."

"The world will see her."

Natalie's voice dropped to a whisper.

"And then what?"

Ryan stared into the fire again.

"Then everything changes."

A strong gust of wind pressed against the castle windows.

The glass trembled slightly.

Natalie turned her head toward it.

For a moment, she imagined Nara outside those walls.

Walking freely.

Laughing.

Unaware.

Unprotected.

Her heart tightened.

"She is growing up inside a cage," Natalie said softly.

Ryan did not deny it.

Because it was true.

But he replied anyway.

"A cage is still protection… if the world outside is full of hunters."

Natalie said nothing.

She looked down at her hands again.

After a long pause, she spoke again.

"Sometimes…" she whispered.

"I see it too."

Ryan turned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Natalie hesitated.

Then she spoke.

"When she is alone… when she thinks no one is watching…"

"I have seen it."

Ryan became still.

Natalie continued, her voice trembling slightly now.

"A faint glow."

"Like fire… trapped under her skin."

"I don't know if she notices it."

"I don't know if she feels it."

"But I see it."

Her voice broke slightly at the end.

"And it scares me."

The fire popped loudly, breaking the tension for a moment.

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"That is why we must be careful," he said.

"She is not just our daughter anymore."

Natalie looked at him sharply.

"What does that mean?"

Ryan hesitated.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

"It means…" he said slowly.

"That one day, she will not be able to stay here anymore."

The words settled heavily in the room.

Natalie stepped back slightly.

"Then what are we supposed to do?" she asked.

"Lock her away forever?"

Ryan did not answer immediately.

Instead, he stared into the flames as if searching for something inside them.

Finally, he spoke.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"But not yet."

A long silence followed.

The fire continued to burn.

The moon continued to shine.

And the castle continued to sleep.

But inside this one room, two people carried a secret heavier than the kingdom itself.

Outside, the wind moved across the castle towers.

It whispered through stone corridors and empty halls.

Far above, in a quiet room filled with golden light…

Princess Nara slept.

Unaware.

Unprotected.

And slowly becoming something the world was not ready to see.

King Ryan stood still for a long time.

His eyes remained fixed on the fire.

Natalie did the same.

Neither of them spoke again.

Because some truths were too heavy to say aloud.

And some futures… were already beginning, whether they were ready or not.
