Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Orders in the Dark

Deep within the black fortress hidden among the northern mountains, the cold blue fire burned steadily, its unnatural glow spreading across the vast stone hall and painting the walls in shifting shadows that seemed almost alive.

The air was heavy.

Still.

Unforgiving.

Lord Varyn stood near the flames, his tall figure unmoving at first glance, yet beneath that stillness, something was wrong. His breathing was uneven, his fingers slightly curled, and a faint tremor ran through his body as if something inside him refused to remain quiet.

The sickness had not left him.

It never did.

His eyes, once calm and sharp, now carried a faint red glow that flickered like embers beneath ash. He stared into the blue fire as though searching for answers within it, his thoughts tangled between pain and ambition, fear and hunger.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then—

A heavy knock echoed through the hall, breaking the silence like a stone thrown into still water.

Varyn did not turn immediately.

"Enter," he commanded at last, his voice low, controlled, but edged with something darker

.

The great doors creaked open slowly.

A tall figure stepped inside.

Rathen.

Clad in black armor that caught the faint blue light, he moved with the quiet strength of someone who had seen battle and survived it.

His presence was solid, unwavering, yet even he seemed smaller in the presence of the man before him.

"My lord," Rathen said, bowing deeply.

Varyn turned slowly to face him.

For a brief moment, the flickering light revealed the faint darkness beneath his skin—thin lines, like veins of shadow, moving just beneath the surface before fading again.

"Rathen," Varyn said.

His voice was steady, but there was strain beneath it.

"Prepare a force."

Rathen lifted his head slightly.

Varyn continued, each word clear, deliberate.

"Horses. Supplies. Weapons. I want everything necessary for a long journey."

He stepped away from the fire, his boots echoing softly against the stone floor as he approached the large table where a map lay spread open.

"We are leaving this place," he added.

Rathen's gaze sharpened.

"Where to, my lord?"

Varyn's eyes dropped to the map.

His fingers moved slowly across it, tracing the jagged paths that led beyond known lands, beyond safety, beyond reason.

Then they stopped.

At a place marked in faded ink.

"The Northern Black Caves," he said.

The words settled heavily in the room.

Rathen's expression changed, though only slightly.

"My lord…" he began carefully, "those lands are not like the others. The path alone is dangerous. The forests are thick, the cliffs unstable, and the valleys…" he hesitated, choosing his words, "many who enter them do not return."

Varyn's lips curved faintly.

Not in amusement.

But in something colder.

"I am not concerned with those who do not return," he said quietly.

He lifted his gaze.

And when Rathen met his eyes, the red glow within them was clearer now.

Stronger.

"The witch," Varyn continued, his voice dropping lower, "the one they call Serrina the Wise…"

A pause followed.

"She alone understands the forces that move in darkness."

Rathen remained silent.

Varyn's hand tightened slightly against the edge of the table.

"The sickness within me is not natural," he said.

"It is power."

His voice sharpened.

"But it is not yet mine to control."

For a brief moment, his body tensed again.

A flicker of pain crossed his face.

His hand lifted instinctively to his chest as if something inside clawed for release.

The black veins appeared again.

Faint..

But real.

Spreading slowly beneath his skin before fading once more.

Rathen noticed.

But said nothing.

Varyn straightened again, forcing control back into his posture.

"If I do not master it," he continued, "it will destroy me."

His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

"And I will not allow that."

Silence filled the hall.

The blue flames flickered.

The shadows stretched.

Rathen bowed his head again.

"As you command, my lord."

But Varyn was not finished.

"Gather the scouts," he said.

"I want the path cleared ahead of us. No delays. No surprises."

He stepped closer to Rathen now, his presence heavier, more intense.

"We leave at first light."

Rathen hesitated for only a moment.

Then nodded.

"It will be done."

But before he could turn to leave—

Varyn spoke again.

"Rathen."

The guard stopped.

"Yes, my lord?"

Varyn's voice softened slightly.

But it did not lose its edge.

"You have heard the stories, have you not?"

Rathen remained still.

"The witch," Varyn continued.

"They say she speaks with shadows."

"They say she sees things others cannot."

"They say those who seek her… are changed."

A faint pause.

Then—

"Or they never return at all."

Rathen's grip tightened slightly at his side.

"I have heard the stories," he admitted.

"And yet you will still go," Varyn said.

It was not a question.

Rathen bowed his head once more.

"I serve you, my lord."

A faint smile touched Varyn's lips.

"Good."

Rathen turned and left the hall without another word, the doors closing behind him with a deep, echoing sound that lingered long after he was gone.

Once again, Varyn stood alone.

The silence returned.

But now it felt sharper.

More alive.

He moved slowly back toward the fire.

His hand hovered over the flames.

Close enough to feel the strange cold heat they gave.

"Serrina…" he whispered.

The name lingered in the air.

"You will have the answers I seek."

His reflection flickered faintly in the polished stone beside him.

The red glow in his eyes burned slightly brighter.

"This curse…" he muttered.

"…will not claim me."

His fingers curled slowly into a fist.

"I will claim it."

The pain returned suddenly.

Stronger.

More violent.

He staggered slightly, gripping the edge of the table as his body tensed.

The black veins surged again, crawling along his hands and up toward his neck like living shadows.

His breath caught.

A low sound escaped him.

Half pain.

Half fury.

But he did not fall.

He did not yield.

Instead, he forced himself upright once more.

Sweat ran down his face, but his expression hardened.

"Tonight…" he said through clenched teeth,

"I endure."

The veins pulsed once more beneath his skin.

Then slowly faded again.

"Tomorrow…"

His voice steadied.

"I take control."

The flames rose slightly, as if responding to his words.

Outside the fortress, the mountains stood silent beneath the night sky, their peaks hidden behind thick clouds that moved slowly across the horizon.

Somewhere beyond them lay the Black Caves.

A place of shadows.

Of secrets.

Of things long forgotten.

And somewhere within those depths…

A woman who held knowledge that could change everything.

Varyn turned toward the distant darkness.

His fear had not disappeared.

It was still there.

Deep within him.

But above it—

Stronger than it—

Was ambition.

Burning.

Unyielding.

Relentless.

Soon, he would leave the safety of stone walls and step into lands where even the brave feared to walk.

Soon, he would face something far older than power.

But he had no choice.

Because the path before him led to only two endings.

Control.

Or destruction.

And Lord Varyn had never been a man who accepted defeat.
