CHAPTER 31: THE SISTER PROBLEM
The Knox Global headquarters felt different the next morning.
Quieter.
Not calm.
Just… restrained.
As if the entire building was holding its breath.
Employees walked faster through the halls. Conversations stopped when executives passed by. Security had doubled on every floor, and every screen inside the building showed the same red countdown clock connected to Helios.
64:12:09
Sixty-four hours.
The number had begun to settle into everyone's mind like an approaching storm.
Inside the operations floor, Marcus hadn't slept.
He sat hunched over three monitors, scanning lines of code while empty coffee cups surrounded his workstation like evidence of a long war.
A junior analyst beside him whispered, "You should rest."
Marcus didn't look up.
"I'll rest when someone tells me how Lysandra Knox rewrote half the Helios architecture without leaving a trace."
Another analyst turned in his chair.
"Do you really think she's acting alone?"
Marcus finally leaned back.
"No."
He pointed at the screen.
"Look at this."
The system map zoomed into the Helios core layer.
Two signals still moved inside the architecture.
Lysandra's.
And the mysterious second one.
The one using Adrian's credentials.
Marcus muttered under his breath.
"Ghost in the machine."
Because whoever controlled that second signal knew the system as well as Lysandra did.
Which meant only one thing.
They had helped build it.
And there were very few people on earth who had done that.
Adrian Knox had been awake all night.
He stood in his office reviewing encrypted Helios logs while the first sunlight of morning crept across the glass walls.
Knox Global towered above the city like a fortress.
But right now it felt more like a battlefield.
A quiet knock came from the door.
Adrian didn't turn.
"Come in."
Elara stepped inside.
She looked slightly tired, but her posture remained composed as always.
"You should probably sleep."
Adrian gave a faint smile.
"You first."
Elara ignored that.
She walked to the desk and placed a tablet in front of him.
"What's that?"
"Marcus pulled additional logs from the Helios development archives."
Adrian's eyes sharpened slightly.
"You found something."
"Yes."
She slid the tablet toward him.
The screen displayed several old development files.
Dates.
System diagrams.
Internal memos.
Adrian recognized them instantly.
The earliest Helios design phase.
Eight years ago.
Elara watched him carefully.
"I thought Helios was your project."
Adrian looked at the files.
"It was."
"But these documents list two lead architects."
Adrian already knew the second name.
But Elara said it anyway.
"Lysandra Knox."
The name settled into the room quietly.
Elara crossed her arms.
"You never mentioned that she helped design it."
Adrian remained silent.
"You told everyone Helios was your creation."
"That was easier."
"For who?"
Adrian finally looked at her.
"For everyone."
Elara studied his expression.
"You're protecting her."
"No."
"You are."
Adrian leaned slightly against the desk.
"I'm preventing unnecessary panic."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Your sister just activated the most dangerous financial system ever created."
"Yes."
"And you think people aren't panicking?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Elara stepped closer.
"So tell me the truth."
He waited.
"What happened between you and Lysandra?"
The silence stretched for several seconds.
Finally Adrian exhaled slowly.
"We disagreed."
Elara scoffed slightly.
"That's the understatement of the century."
Adrian's gaze drifted briefly toward the window.
Then back to her.
"Lysandra believed Helios should be used as leverage."
"Leverage?"
"Power."
The word carried weight.
"She believed whoever controlled global markets controlled the future."
Elara frowned.
"And you didn't agree."
"No."
"So what happened?"
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"She tried to test the system."
Elara blinked.
"Test it how?"
"She triggered a controlled market disruption."
Elara's eyes widened.
"Are you serious?"
"It lasted four minutes."
"And what happened?"
Adrian looked back at the files on the tablet.
"The global currency exchange system lost synchronization."
Elara's stomach dropped.
"That's not a test."
"It was to her."
The room went quiet again.
"So you shut the project down."
"Yes."
"And she disappeared."
Adrian nodded once.
"For eight years."
Elara leaned back slightly.
Trying to process it.
"Wait."
Adrian looked at her.
"You're telling me the woman currently threatening the global economy…"
"…already tried to break it once."
"Yes."
Elara let out a slow breath.
"That's insane."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"No."
"She's brilliant."
Elara stared at him.
"You say that like you admire her."
"I do."
The honesty of the statement surprised her.
"She's the only person who understands Helios the way I do."
"That's not comforting."
"No."
He looked at the screen showing the Helios countdown.
63:41:12
"It isn't."
Elara leaned against the edge of the desk.
"Can I ask you something?"
Adrian nodded.
"If Lysandra believes Helios should control global markets…"
She hesitated.
"…what makes you so sure you're right and she's wrong?"
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"Because power without restraint destroys systems."
Elara tilted her head slightly.
"And power with restraint doesn't?"
Adrian didn't respond immediately.
That silence was answer enough.
Elara studied him carefully.
"You built Helios as a safeguard."
"Yes."
"But you still kept the offensive architecture she designed."
Adrian's gaze flickered.
"You noticed."
"I notice things."
"Clearly."
Elara crossed her arms again.
"So why keep it?"
Adrian looked toward the skyline outside.
The city looked peaceful in the early morning light.
"I told you yesterday."
"Someone else would build it eventually."
"That's not the whole answer."
Adrian didn't reply.
Elara's voice softened slightly.
"You and Lysandra designed the most powerful financial system in the world together."
"Yes."
"And now you're on opposite sides."
"Yes."
"So tell me something honestly."
She held his gaze.
"If Helios reaches full activation…"
"…and the only way to stop your sister is to use the offensive system she created…"
Her voice lowered.
"Would you do it?"
Adrian didn't answer.
And the silence lasted long enough to make her uneasy.
Finally he spoke.
"If Lysandra gains full control of Helios…"
"Yes?"
"I won't have a choice."
The calmness in his voice made the answer more disturbing.
Because he wasn't speaking hypothetically.
He was preparing.
Across the city, Lysandra Knox watched the Helios system map update.
Her apartment was quiet except for the soft hum of processors and servers lining the walls.
On her largest monitor, two signals still moved through the network.
Hers.
And the ghost using Adrian's credentials.
She smiled faintly.
"Still looking for me."
Another monitor displayed Knox Global's internal cameras.
She saw Adrian and Elara inside his office.
Talking.
Analyzing.
Trying to understand her plan.
Lysandra leaned back slightly.
"They still think Helios is the battlefield."
Her fingers moved across the keyboard.
New code uploaded into the network.
Quiet.
Invisible.
Buried deep inside the architecture.
"Adrian always thinks three steps ahead."
She paused.
"But this time…"
Her smile widened slightly.
"…I started the game before he even realized we were playing."
The Helios countdown ticked again.
63:32:51
And somewhere inside the system—
Another hidden command quietly activated.
Preparing the next move.
Because the real war between Adrian and Lysandra…
had only just begun.
