CHAPTER 33: THE QUIET WAR
By midnight, the world had started whispering.
Financial networks buzzed with speculation. Analysts on international trading forums were discussing an anonymous leak about a "corporate financial control system." Newsrooms in London, New York, and Tokyo were verifying documents they had just received.
No one had published anything yet.
But the questions were already spreading.
Inside Knox Global, the tension had shifted from panic to strategy.
And deep within the Helios architecture…
A conversation began.
Marcus stared at the massive digital wall.
Two signals continued moving across the system.
Lysandra's.
And the ghost using Adrian's credentials.
But now something new appeared.
A message window opened inside the Helios command interface.
Marcus blinked.
"Adrian."
Adrian stepped forward.
"What is it?"
Marcus pointed.
"She opened a communication channel."
Elara leaned closer.
"To who?"
Marcus enlarged the display.
The message had already appeared.
LYSANDRA:
Still trying to control everything, Adrian?
Silence filled the operations floor.
Marcus whispered, "She's talking to you."
Adrian studied the screen.
"She's not talking to me."
Elara frowned.
"Then who?"
Adrian gestured toward the second signal on the map.
"The one using my credentials."
Marcus's voice tightened.
"She thinks it's you."
The message cursor blinked again.
Another line appeared.
LYSANDRA:
You always hated when I moved the pieces first.
Victor's voice suddenly spoke from behind them.
"Well."
Everyone turned.
Victor had entered the operations floor again, hands casually in his pockets.
"This is fascinating."
Adrian didn't look at him.
"Marcus."
"Yes?"
"Respond."
Marcus blinked.
"You want me to pretend to be you?"
Adrian's eyes remained on the screen.
"No."
He stepped closer to the console.
"I'll do it myself."
Elara's gaze sharpened.
"You're engaging her."
"Yes."
"Is that wise?"
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"No."
He typed a short response.
The message appeared instantly.
ADRIAN:
Still trying to burn the world to prove a point?
Marcus exhaled softly.
"Direct."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Oh, this is going to be entertaining."
The response came within seconds.
LYSANDRA:
You're the one who built the weapon, Adrian.
Elara crossed her arms.
"She's baiting you."
Adrian didn't answer.
He typed again.
ADRIAN:
You're the one trying to fire it.
The typing indicator appeared immediately.
LYSANDRA:
You always underestimate me.
Adrian's expression remained calm.
ADRIAN:
No. I never do.
Elara watched the exchange carefully.
Because the tone between them wasn't just hostile.
It was… familiar.
Like two people who had fought this battle before.
Victor murmured quietly, "Sibling rivalry at its finest."
Adrian ignored him.
Another message appeared.
LYSANDRA:
You really think you can stop me?
Adrian typed.
ADRIAN:
Yes.
A pause.
Then—
LYSANDRA:
You couldn't eight years ago.
The operations floor went silent.
Elara glanced at Adrian.
His expression hadn't changed.
But something colder settled behind his eyes.
He typed slowly this time.
ADRIAN:
You ran.
The response appeared almost instantly.
LYSANDRA:
I evolved.
Marcus whispered under his breath, "This is insane."
Victor leaned slightly closer to the screen.
"No."
"This is strategy."
As the messages continued, Elara studied the Helios system map again.
The two signals were still moving.
Lysandra's.
And the ghost signal.
But something felt wrong.
She stepped closer to Marcus.
"Zoom in."
He did.
The signals moved toward the Helios root layer.
Elara frowned.
"Wait."
Marcus glanced at her.
"What?"
"That second signal."
"What about it?"
"It's not responding."
Marcus blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"Elara's right," Victor said quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
Victor gestured toward the map.
"Lysandra thinks she's talking to Adrian."
"But the signal using Adrian's credentials hasn't changed position once during this conversation."
Marcus stared at the screen.
He zoomed further.
Victor was right.
The ghost signal remained perfectly still.
Adrian stopped typing.
Elara spoke slowly.
"That's not you."
Adrian's voice was calm.
"No."
Marcus whispered, "Then who the hell is controlling it?"
Because someone was still inside the Helios architecture.
Someone Lysandra believed was Adrian.
And that person wasn't responding at all.
In her apartment filled with glowing monitors, Lysandra Knox watched the same messages appear on her screen.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Because something about the responses felt off.
The tone was Adrian's.
The strategy was Adrian's.
But something didn't align.
She leaned forward.
"Interesting."
Her fingers danced across the keyboard.
She accessed deeper Helios system logs.
And located the second signal.
The one using Adrian's credentials.
She whispered softly.
"You're not him."
Another command executed.
Helios scanned the signal identity.
The result appeared.
Lysandra smiled slowly.
"Well."
Her voice carried quiet amusement.
"Now that is unexpected."
Because the system had identified the source.
The ghost inside Helios.
And it wasn't Adrian.
Marcus suddenly shouted.
"Adrian!"
Everyone turned.
"What?"
Marcus pointed at the screen.
"The ghost signal just moved."
The blinking dot shifted deeper into the system.
Toward the Helios core.
Adrian's gaze sharpened.
"Trace it."
Marcus typed rapidly.
"I'm trying."
The system struggled to follow the signal.
Then—
A new message appeared on the communication channel.
But it wasn't from Lysandra.
And it wasn't from Adrian.
It was from the ghost.
The entire operations floor froze.
The message contained only three words.
HELLO, ADRIAN.
Elara felt her pulse spike.
Marcus whispered, "That's not Lysandra."
Victor's smile disappeared completely.
Adrian's eyes darkened.
Another line appeared.
I'VE BEEN WAITING.
Silence filled the room.
Because whoever had just revealed themselves inside Helios…
Wasn't Adrian.
Wasn't Lysandra.
And they clearly knew exactly what they were doing.
The quiet war had just gained a third player.
