Chapter 20 - The Turning Point

The hill camp had fallen into a deep, quiet sleep.

The bonfire that had once crackled with laughter and songs had faded into glowing embers. The students slept peacefully in their tents, tired from the long day of trekking and games. The cool mountain wind moved gently through the tall pine trees, carrying with it the soft scent of damp earth and wild grass.

But not everyone was asleep.

Principal Rubia walked slowly through the campsite, a lantern swinging lightly in her hand.

For the past few days, something had been troubling her.

She had watched the students carefully—especially two of them.

Maahi and Harry.

Their closeness had not escaped her notice. The way they lingered together during meals. The way they laughed quietly by the bonfire. The way they always seemed to disappear at the same time after lights-out.

At first, she had ignored it.

Teenagers were foolish sometimes. A little excitement, a little friendship—it usually faded with time.

But tonight, she had decided to see the truth for herself.

Her footsteps were quiet as she walked toward the edge of the forest, where the ground sloped gently into a wide meadow.

The sky above stretched endlessly, filled with glittering stars.

And that was when she saw them.

Two silhouettes lying close together on the grass.

Rubia narrowed her eyes and stepped closer.

Her expression hardened instantly.

It was Maahi and Harry.

They were lying side by side under the open sky, Harry's arm wrapped loosely around Maahi as they slept peacefully in each other's embrace.

For a moment, Rubia simply stared.

Then anger surged through her like fire.

Her footsteps grew louder as she marched forward.

The crunch of gravel beneath her shoes startled the two sleeping figures.

Harry stirred first, blinking in confusion as he sat up.

Maahi followed a second later, rubbing her eyes.

And then they saw her.

Principal Rubia stood before them, her face dark with fury.

Before either of them could speak—

Smack!

Her hand struck Harry's cheek.

The sound echoed sharply in the quiet night.

Before Maahi could react—

Smack!

Rubia slapped her as well.

"How dare you!" she hissed, her voice shaking with rage.

Maahi's eyes instantly filled with tears.

Harry sat frozen, stunned by the sudden blow.

Rubia's glare burned into them.

"Do you have any idea how disgraceful this is?" she snapped. "Sleeping together in the forest like this?"

Her voice grew colder.

"Tomorrow morning, both of your parents will be informed."

Maahi felt the world spin.

"And you will face the consequences of this shameless behavior."

"No…" Maahi whispered, panic rising in her chest.

But Rubia had already grabbed her wrist tightly.

"Come with me."

"Please…" Maahi tried to speak, but her voice broke into sobs as Rubia dragged her toward the tents.

Harry remained sitting on the grass, shock and fear crashing through him like a storm.

Just before disappearing into the darkness, Maahi turned back.

For a brief second, their eyes met.

Fear.

Regret.

And love.

Everything they couldn't say filled that single glance.

Rubia suddenly turned back toward Harry.

"Go back to your tent," she snapped coldly. "Tomorrow you will answer to your parents too."

Harry swallowed hard.

His chest felt unbearably tight.

Slowly, he stood and walked back toward the campsite, every step heavier than the last.

Inside her tent, Maahi lay curled on her sleeping bag, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

The other girls were asleep, unaware of the storm raging inside her heart.

Her father's face flashed in her mind.

Strict.

Unforgiving.

She knew exactly what would happen when he heard the news.

He would never forgive her.

But strangely, that wasn't the thought that broke her the most.

It was something worse.

What if she was never allowed to see Harry again?

The thought crushed her chest with unbearable pain.

Meanwhile, Harry sat alone on his narrow camp bed, staring blankly at the ground.

His hands trembled slightly.

His family's reputation echoed inside his mind like a warning.

They were one of the most respected families in the city.

If this scandal reached them…

It wouldn't just be him who suffered.

His entire family would be humiliated.

Harry buried his face in his hands.

The weight of shame and fear pressed down on him until breathing felt difficult.

The night grew darker.

And darker.

And slowly, his thoughts began turning into something dangerous.

Something desperate.

Finally, he stood up.

Without making a sound, he slipped out of the tent.

The forest greeted him with cold silence.

Harry walked without thinking, his feet moving along the narrow trail deeper into the woods.

The sound of rushing water soon reached his ears.

A high cliff stood ahead, overlooking a violent river crashing against the rocks below.

Harry stepped closer to the edge.

The wind whipped around him, tugging at his clothes.

Tears blurred his vision.

"This is the only way," he whispered weakly.

He lifted one trembling foot toward the edge.

And then—

A hand grabbed his wrist.

"Harry!"

He spun around in shock.

Maahi stood behind him, her chest rising and falling rapidly as if she had run all the way there.

Her eyes were red from crying.

Before Harry could say anything—

Smack!

She slapped him hard across the face.

"How dare you!" she shouted, her voice breaking.

Harry stared at her, stunned.

"How dare you think of leaving me like this!"

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Do you think I can live without you?"

Her hands trembled as she grabbed his shirt.

"I love you, Harry!"

The words echoed through the quiet forest.

"And I won't let anyone separate us!" she cried fiercely. "Not my father, not your family, not Rubia—no one!"

Harry felt something inside his chest shatter and rebuild at the same time.

Maahi's tear-streaked face glowed under the moonlight.

She cupped his face gently.

"If we can't live together here…" she whispered, her voice trembling with determination, "then we'll live somewhere else."

Harry's heart pounded.

"Let's run away," she said softly.

"Right now."

For a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath.

Then Harry nodded slowly.

Hope flickered back into his eyes.

They both knew there was no turning back now.

They moved quickly through the dark campsite.

The teachers' tents stood quietly near the edge of the clearing.

Maahi and Harry exchanged a glance.

Then they slipped inside.

They searched hurriedly, gathering whatever money they could find in wallets and bags.

Maahi's anger burned hotter when she reached Principal Rubia's tent.

She found Rubia's handbag resting beside the bed.

Opening it, she pulled out several important documents.

Her eyes hardened.

"She won't ruin our lives again," Maahi muttered under her breath.

Without hesitation, she stepped outside and flung the papers deep into the forest.

Meanwhile, Harry had picked up Rubia's phone from the table.

A mischievous smirk appeared on his face as he unlocked it.

Quickly, he typed a message.

I love you.

He sent it to the school's peon.

Then he took a screenshot and forwarded it to the number labeled "Husband."

Harry chuckled quietly.

"That should keep her busy for a while."

Maahi almost laughed despite everything.

For a moment, the fear faded.

They looked at each other.

This was it.

Taking each other's hands tightly, they began to run.

Faster.

And faster.

Away from the campsite.

Away from the rules and punishments waiting for them.

Away from the world that wanted to separate them.

The forest behind them remained silent as their footsteps disappeared into the darkness.

Their hearts pounded wildly—half with fear, half with exhilaration.

They had no plan.

No destination.

They didn't know where the road ahead would take them.

But for the first time that night, they felt something powerful.

Freedom.

Two young lovers running into the unknown—defying the world for the sake of their fragile, beautiful love.
