Chapter 254 - The Black Giants and the Trouble of Getting Lost

Translator: AnubisTL

If the Thermal Energy Absorption Technology and Energy Property Conversion Technology formed the Black Giants' "skeleton" at the level of energy laws, then the lava giants' digestive system, modified by Jieming into the Energy Absorption and Conversion System, constituted the most vital "core" of the Black Giants' energy circulation!

To further enhance the Black Giants' ability to utilize this unique trait, Jieming even retrieved a cultivation method from the Great Dao Library Pavilion that allowed one to strengthen themselves through consumption and absorption—the Five Viscera Divine Sacrifice Art.

Drawing upon his experience adapting body tempering methods for local use, Jieming applied this technique to the Black Giants' digestive systems, pushing their absorption efficiency to unprecedented levels.

At that moment, a sudden crisis erupted!

Just as the Black Giants were feasting, a group of Cloud Monsters, realizing they couldn't escape, chose the most desperate form of resistance: self-detonation!

Though their explosions lacked the fiery brilliance of flames, the instantaneous detonation of the pure wind element within their bodies unleashed violent shockwaves.

The combined self-detonation of multiple Cloud Monsters amplified the destructive force to extraordinary levels!

In that instant, a visible white shockwave surged outward in all directions with astonishing speed!

The surging air currents instantly swept away everything nearby. In its wake, both the shattered remains of Cloud Monsters and naturally condensed energy clusters were violently compressed and distorted.

The force tore the debris into even smaller fragments, which were then hurled away at breakneck speed by the violent shockwave.

Some of the weaker Cloud Monsters shattered instantly under the immense pressure, vanishing without a trace!

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Caught completely off guard, the lower-level second-tier Black Giants had no time to react. The shockwave slammed into them, blasting them away like ragdolls!

Amidst their agonizing roars, the four Black Giants tumbled through the air, dragged along by the cloud mist churned up by the shockwave, until they vanished into the distance.

Jieming felt the razor-sharp shockwave approaching. Frowning, he raised his hand and erected an energy shield before him, blocking the residual qi currents.

Meanwhile, the highest-level member of the party, a third-tier Black Giant, remained completely unaffected.

In fact, by absorbing some of the shockwave's energy, its strength had actually increased!

But the sudden attack had enraged it.

ROAR!!

With a furious roar, it unleashed a volcanic eruption of flame, charging through the fleeing Cloud swarm like a meteor, its terrifying aura sweeping across the battlefield as it slaughtered everything in its path!

Even as it slaughtered, the Black Giant never forgot to tear its victims apart and devour them.

Only when the "Clouds" scattered beyond reach did the Black Giant finally cease its rampage.

Jieming examined the condition of the Black Giants that had been blasted away.

As elemental creatures, the Cloud Monsters' earlier explosions hadn't inflicted any serious injuries.

However, the Black Giants had lost significant mass and energy, their auras noticeably weakened.

As a result, apart from the third-tier Black Giant, the others had essentially wasted their efforts on the futile act of devouring.

No, that wasn't entirely true.

Under Jieming's watchful gaze, the auras of the Black Giants around him began to diminish rapidly.

This indicated a rapid depletion of their internal energy.

Yet, simultaneously, distinct cyan patterns began to emerge across their bodies.

Though these pale blue patterns quickly faded, merging back into the black flames that enveloped their forms.

Jieming knew all too well that these patterns wouldn't simply vanish without leaving a trace.

He recognized these patterns instantly—they were the energy pathways that manifested when the body tempering methods of the cultivation system were in operation!

That's right!

Jieming had even adapted his own powerful body tempering method, derived from the cultivation system, and integrated it into the Black Giants' physiology!

This approach had several drawbacks.

First, as Elemental Lifeforms, the Black Giants couldn't fully benefit from all the enhancements provided by body tempering methods designed for flesh-and-blood bodies. Their elemental bodies had inherent limitations in certain areas of improvement.

Second, this method drastically increased the energy required to cultivate the Black Giants! Moreover, the energy consumption needed for their subsequent growth would escalate to terrifying levels!

In essence, each Black Giant was an insatiable energy sink!

However, the advantages far outweighed these drawbacks. By incorporating the core mechanisms of body tempering, the Black Giants had gained a degree of Adaptive Evolution!

In other words, as long as a Black Giant survived an attack, it would gain resistance to that type of attack. The next time it faced a similar attack, it would suffer reduced damage!

Moreover, this feedback from "Adaptive Evolution" simplified the Black Giant's evolution process.

A major limitation of elemental creatures was that their maximum potential was fixed at birth.

However, the body tempering method allowed them to break through this barrier.

Theoretically, if a Black Giant lived long enough and absorbed enough energy, it could evolve all the way to a sixth-tier creature.

"Excellent," Jieming nodded in satisfaction, preparing to continue flying.

But as he scanned the vast, featureless white mist around him, he couldn't help but frown.

In the end, he had to pull out his Terminal and painstakingly locate the "ship plane" as a reference point.

By determining the relative direction between himself and the ship plane, he could then figure out which way to fly next.

This was the most troublesome aspect of this plane.

Without gravity, it was impossible to maintain any sense of direction.

Moreover, since everything in this plane floated in mid-air, there were no fixed up, down, left, or right.

In reality, in addition to the four cardinal directions (front, back, left, right), one also had to constantly track the headache-inducing vertical dimensions of up and down.

"I haven't flown too far yet, so I can still use my Terminal to locate the ship plane," Jieming muttered, feeling the situation was becoming increasingly precarious.

"But later, if I stray beyond the Terminal's signal range, I could easily get lost in this disorienting fog."

"Still... the camp must be working on countermeasures by now, right?"

Just as Jieming was pondering this, his Terminal suddenly buzzed.

Glancing at the notification, Jieming smiled with a sense of anticipation.

Just as he'd predicted, the camp had begun issuing mandatory missions!
