The door deposited them on a familiar coral platform.
Jarine blinked, looking around at the turquoise sea, the green sky, the two suns chasing each other across the horizon. "We're back in Aquaria."
Ren laughed—a genuine, surprised sound. "The door has a sense of humor. Or maybe it just knew we needed a break."
Before they could speculate further, the water beneath them stirred. Not violently, but purposefully. A shape rose from the depths—massive, ancient, divine.
It was a whale, but not like any whale Jarine had seen. Its skin shimmered with living constellations. Its eyes held the depth of oceans and the wisdom of eons. And its presence—its presence—pressed against them with the weight of a world.
Ren dropped to one knee immediately, his mortal form trembling. "A god. A true god of this realm."
Jarine remained standing, but only through sheer force of will. The being before him was ancient beyond measure, powerful beyond comprehension. And yet, as it regarded them, its eyes held something unexpected.
Gratitude.
"You are the gardeners," it said. Its voice was the crash of waves, the whisper of currents, the song of whales. "You who healed my Heart. You who saved my children."
Jarine found his voice. "We did what anyone would do."
"No. You did what few would do. What none have done in the long memory of my waters." The god—the Oceanus, Jarine realized, the divine embodiment of this world—inclined its vast head. "I am Thalassus, Keeper of the Deep. And I owe you a debt that cannot be repaid."
"You don't owe us anything."
"I owe you everything." Thalassus's eyes held them, ancient and warm. "The Heart of Aquaria is not merely a coral formation. It is my heart. My connection to this world. When it began to die, I began to fade. Your healing saved not just my people, but me."
Ren rose slowly, his divine nature recognizing a kindred spirit. "We didn't know. We just—"
"You just acted. That is why it matters." Thalassus turned to Jarine. "Gardener. You who carry life across worlds. I would offer you a gift. Not repayment—you have refused that. But a promise."
"A promise?"
"If ever you face darkness too deep, waters too cold, depths too profound—call upon me. I will come. Not as a god commanding, but as an ally aiding. My whales will carry you. My currents will speed you. My self will fight beside you, if needed."
Jarine was silent for a long moment. A god's promise—a true god's promise—was not something to accept lightly.
"Thank you," he said finally. "I hope I never need to call."
"As do I. But if you do—" Thalassus's form began to sink back into the depths. "I will be there."
The water stilled. The god was gone.
Ren let out a long breath. "Well. That was unexpected."
Jarine looked at the calm sea, at the place where a god had risen to thank them. "He called me a gardener."
"You are a gardener."
"He's a god. And he called me a gardener." Jarine shook his head slowly. "I started as a farmer who just wanted to grow turnips."
"And now you have the gratitude of a water god, the friendship of a reincarnation god, and more gardens than anyone can count." Ren smiled. "Not bad for a turnip farmer."
Jarine laughed—a genuine, surprised sound. "Not bad at all."

They stayed on the coral platform for a day, resting, processing.
Ren sat at the edge, his feet dangling in the water, his mortal face thoughtful. "You know, in all my eons, I've never been thanked by another god. Not sincerely. Not like that."
"Maybe you weren't listening."
"Maybe I wasn't deserving." Ren looked at Jarine. "I've changed since I started traveling with you. I can feel it. I care now—really care—about things I used to just observe."
"That's called being alive."
"Is it? I've been alive for longer than your universe. But I've never felt this." He touched his chest, where a mortal heart beat. "This ache. This hope. This fear. It's terrifying. And wonderful."
Jarine sat beside him. "Welcome to being human."
"I'm not human."
"No. But you're learning." He put a hand on Ren's shoulder. "That's what matters."

The door materialized at sunset, its light blending with the two suns' glow.
Before they could step through, the water stirred again—not Thalassus this time, but something else. A pod of Lumina-Whales, their skins blazing with soft light, swimming in a circle around the platform.
Their leader—the same whale that had carried them before—surfaced and regarded them with ancient eyes.
We remember, it seemed to say. We will always remember.
Jarine reached out and touched its smooth skin. "And we will remember you."
The whales sang—a chorus of gratitude, of farewell, of hope. The sound filled the air, the water, their hearts.
Then they dove, disappearing into the depths.
Ren wiped his eyes—when had he started crying?—and followed Jarine through the door.
