Both lunged to kill. Zekai got there first.
He caught the Soulreaver mid-motion and drove it forward with a force that didn't stop at contact — the momentum carried straight through, tearing a gouge across the stone floor before slamming the creature into the wall hard enough to crack concrete.
It tried to hold its shape. Failed.
That was the opening. He closed the distance again, faster this time, hitting it before the first impact had even finished echoing through the stone. Then again.
*BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.*
He didn't let up. Each blow drove deeper than the last, crushing the shadow further into the masonry, the shockwaves rattling old foundations buried behind the wall's surface. And still the thing held together.
Still refused to die.
"...Of course you are," he muttered through his teeth.
Nothing should have survived that. It had. But things like the Soulreaver never played by mortal rules.
Then it moved differently. Not retreat — adaptation. Its torso folded inward, dissolving into thick shadow that lunged for his right arm, wrapping tight, trying to eat through flesh from the inside. Pain shot up to his shoulder and froze the blood in his veins.
"Too slow."
He clenched his fist, let the Fool's authority surge through it, and tore the shadow off in pieces, throwing the scraps aside.
It fled across the floor like something that finally understood what it was dealing with. But it didn't leave the room. It poured itself into the King Knight's hollow chest plate instead — no strength left to hold a body of its own, so it took the corpse's armor as a replacement. The metal groaned once in resistance. Then gave in.
The dead blue flame behind the visor changed. Not extinguished — devoured. The light bent inward, darkening, twisting into something that didn't belong in this world.
Black. Not the absence of light. Fire that fed on it.
[ ANOMALY CONFIRMED ]
Flame Type: Unregistered
Property: Light Consumption
Warning: Do Not Engage Directly
Thick black flame leaked from the cracks in the armor, slow and rhythmic, like a heartbeat waking up inside dead metal. The air in the hall dropped colder, thicker, like the room itself was trying to reject what had just crawled into it. The plates shuddered. The knight rose back onto its feet.
Something else was wearing the armor now.
The metal bled black — not gray, not scorched. Absolute midnight.
Two hollow white eyes lit up behind the visor.
[ ENTITY SHIFT DETECTED ]
Host: King Knight (Deceased)
Override: In Progress
[ CLASSIFICATION UPDATED ]
SOULREAVER → SOULREAVER KNIGHT Threat Level: Elevated
A Soulreaver Knight.
"Who set this up." Zekai's voice cracked off the vaulted ceiling. "Why bring us here?"
No answer. He hadn't expected one.
"Fine." His expression went flat. "I'll end this all at once."
The Knight didn't attack.
It just stood there. Completely still, for the first time since the fight started.
His knuckles whitened around the hilt, body coiled to strike.
"...What now?"
The hall went quiet. Too quiet. The black flame leaking from the cracked armor slowed, flickered, and died out entirely.
Something rippled outward from its silhouette — the way ink spreads through still water.
Ripple.
Ripple.
Ripple.
The broken marble columns dissolved into the air. The ruined walls thinned into mist. The stone under his boots melted away into nothing.
"...What—" His eyes went wide, every instinct screaming at him to jump clear, except there was nowhere left to land.
The world had already changed around him.
Shelves. Harsh fluorescent light overhead. Cold glass refrigerators lined up in neat rows. The faint smell of instant noodles and processed snacks hanging in the air.
A convenience store. Not just any store. The exact one where he'd first met Aron.
The blood on his sword was gone. The gore on his clothes had vanished with it. The palace, the fight, the whole nightmare — erased, replaced by something painfully, terrifyingly ordinary.
He reached for the interface on instinct, the way he'd done a hundred times since Zero marked him. Nothing answered. No crimson. No hum against his ribs. For the first time since this had started, the Fool had gone completely silent.
That scared him more than the blood ever had.
His hand dropped to his side, hunting for the sword hilt. Empty. He checked his coat next — the cube, the box, both gone, like this place had decided he didn't need them here.
"...No." His stomach knotted tight. Cold sweat broke across his neck. "No."
The fluorescent tubes hummed overhead, casting their sterile white glow down the aisles. For one fragile second he almost let himself believe it — that the blood, the horror, all of it, had just been some fever dream his mind cooked up.
Then the thought cut through before the relief could settle. Where did it go. The Knight hadn't died. It hadn't retreated. One second it was standing in the ruin, black flame leaking from its armor — the next, this. Something didn't just save me. Something moved me.
Then he saw him.
Aron stood behind the register. Whole. No wounds. No bruises darkening his skin. No fear behind his eyes. Just Aron — same tired smile, same overworked eyes he'd worn the first day they met.
"...Aron?" The name barely made it out of his throat.
The boy glanced up, casual, like they'd simply crossed paths on some unremarkable Tuesday.
"Oh. You're here."
Something about this was wrong down to the bone. Zekai took a slow step forward, boots clicking against the spotless floor.
"Aron."
The boy just watched him, smile fixed in place. Then he asked a question that knocked every thought clean out of Zekai's head.
"Why are you apologizing?"
Zekai stopped mid-step.
"...What?"
Aron tilted his head, gaze unblinking.
"You look guilty."
The store swallowed the silence whole. The air between the aisles pressed down twice as heavy as it should have.
"I—" Zekai started, and for the first time in his life, nothing came after it.
Aron's smile thinned at the edges, something sharper slipping into his voice.
"You know it. You've always known something was wrong."
