Zekai's eyes opened.
Crimson light flooded back into them, sharp enough to cut.
The weeping illusion froze, the knife locked mid-air.
"...No." Zekai's voice stripped itself bare of every crack it had shown a moment ago.
The blade didn't move. Couldn't.
"No." He stepped into the point of it, forcing the illusion back a pace.
The twisted smile on Aron's face twitched, glitching at the edges like a bad signal.
"No." His tone dropped somewhere cold and final.
The false world around them shuddered. He looked straight into the hollow eyes across from him, and for the first time since the distortion had swallowed him whole, he wasn't looking at Aron anymore.
He was looking at the lie wearing his face.
"You're not him."
CRACK.
The illusion's skin split open, peeling back to reveal the black underneath.
"You don't know the first thing about him." The words came out through his teeth.
The real Aron had chosen to stay. This thing had never earned the right to wear his voice.
CRACK.
The store shattered into a million meaningless pieces. Shelves burst into splinters. The fluorescent tubes exploded into fine dust hanging in the air. Something inhuman screamed from inside the collapsing mask, and the stolen shape twisted, folding back down into a writhing black silhouette.
The Soulreaver. Exposed.
Its borrowed humanity peeled away like wet paint sliding off a wall.
Zekai's hand shot out and closed around its smoky throat before it could finish unraveling.
The fake world came apart with a roar.
BOOOOOOM!!
The ancient throne hall crashed back into existence around them.
No blade wounds marked his skin. Whatever the illusion had cut into him, it hadn't followed him out — only the memory of the pain had.
The real Aron lay a short distance away — broken, bleeding, chest rising and falling. Alive.
And behind his still body, the Soulreaver's shadow rose up.
Still wearing the King Knight's broken armor like a second skin, black flame leaking from every crack in the plate.
Something in Zekai went past cold, into territory he'd never touched before. Killing intent flooded the ruined chamber, thick enough to choke on.
The Soulreaver actually flinched. Took a step back. For the first time since this had all started, fear moved across something that shouldn't have been able to feel it.
Pure survival instinct fired next. Black fire tore loose from its shadow palm and shot straight for Aron's defenseless body.
"ARON!"
Zekai lunged, muscle tearing under the force of his own acceleration.
Too late.
The flame swallowed Aron whole, wrapping him in a sphere of light-eating fire. For one unbearable second, the hall went dead silent around the blaze.
Then the black fire winked out of existence.
No new wounds on his skin. No scorch marks on his clothes. Nothing.
Aron lifted his head slowly, movements sluggish, lost. His eyes drifted through the wreckage until they landed on Zekai.
Then he smiled — polite, distant, the kind of smile you give a stranger on the street.
"...Excuse me." His voice carried nothing. No weight. No memory.
A pause stretched out, freezing in the cold air of the hall.
"What is this place?"
"Who are you?"
Zekai's hand, still raised toward him, dropped to his side. He didn't remember deciding to lower it.
Zekai said nothing.
That question did more damage than every blade, every death, every accusation the illusion had thrown at him combined.
Across the hall, the Soulreaver smiled.
It hadn't burned skin. It hadn't touched a soul.
It had erased the thread connecting the two of them.
And for the first time since becoming the Fool, something colder than rage settled into Zekai's chest.
Loss.
Every calculation running behind his eyes ground to a halt. The strategy, the cold analysis — gone, replaced by one single, burning fact.
The Soulreaver's jagged white smile stretched wider across the room.
And for the first time in his life, Zekai didn't just want to win.
He wanted to make something suffer before it died.
The Soulreaver Knight raised its blade, black flame licking up the steel. Zekai stepped forward to meet it with nothing but his bare hands.
It came faster than before, the sword cutting a horizontal arc straight for his skull. He leaned back just far enough to let the wind of it graze his face, then stepped inside the guard and drove a kick into its ribs hard enough to crack stone.
"Die."
The knight flew back, caught its footing against the floor, and thrust forward again — a low strike aimed at his gut.
He caught the blade with his bare hand.
"No."
Pain arrived before his eyes even registered the movement. Steel was already buried in his palm, grinding against bone, before he'd consciously seen it move.
"...Tch."

Blood ran hot down his wrist, soaking into his sleeve. His grip never loosened. Let go now, and the blade would finish the job straight through his chest.
Pain screamed up his arm. He held the momentum dead in place anyway, and before the Knight could add leverage, his other hand snapped forward, closed around the upper length of steel, and snapped the sword in half.
For one fraction of a second, the world lagged behind him.
Not a pause in time. Not some bent pocket of space. Reality simply hadn't caught up yet — and he moved inside that gap before it could.

He grabbed the Knight's torso, spun its full weight using the borrowed momentum, and slammed it into the ground. Again. Again. Each impact cracked more black armor loose, shards skittering across the ruined floor.
The Soulreaver Knight hit stone hard, flames guttering.
Then pain lanced behind his eyes — not from the fight. From somewhere deeper, somewhere the Ledger kept its accounts. His vision split in two: one half still locked on the Knight, the other dragging him toward a room he didn't recognize.
