Chapter 90 - Chapter 87: Getting Away

However, the crowd was dead silent. No one responded to him; instead, they were whispering amongst themselves.

"What does he want with Hyde?"

"I don't know. Is it that Hyde whose younger brother is an apprentice in the Modification School?"

"Didn't Hyde say just yesterday that inspections have been strict lately and he wouldn't be coming? Why is he looking for him?"

...Seemingly hearing the whispers of the people below, Kalv's face darkened, as if his plans had fallen through.

At that moment, the Enforcer Captain ran over and whispered a few words to him. Kalv then beamed and said:

"Then let's do that."

Having said that, he began to distance himself from this place where the stench was clearly noticeable.

The Enforcer Captain then addressed the crowd:

"Hyde has been caught. The mission is complete. Just search them once and we're done."

He pointed at a mercenary who had already fainted on the ground. That mercenary probably didn't know that he would have to change his name from now on.

To Kalv, it didn't matter who the real Hyde was. What mattered was Hyde's deeds and the acknowledgement of the Modification School members who had traded with him. As long as he reported this incident, the Necromancy School could use it to launch an attack.

As for the real Hyde, he would likely have to change his name in the future as well, if he didn't want to be dragged into the battle between the two Schools.

Furan breathed a sigh of relief at the sight. It turned out they weren't here for Beloli's body. However, she was also curious as to why they would make such a big fuss just to catch a corpse dealer.

"You, come here. I have a few questions for you."

An Enforcer pointed at Furan. Furan followed him to a relatively open area.

"Name?"

"Rhodes..." Furan spoke in a slightly mature male voice. It was a Voice-Changing potion she had specifically drunk before coming, which could change the voice based on the ingredients used.

"What are you doing here?"

"I am a member of the Modification School. I'm here to deliver my crippled corpses."

The Enforcer scribbled a few notes on a piece of paper and then said:

"Can I see your face?"

"...Fine." Furan waited for two seconds on purpose before speaking.

Then, she slowly removed the black cloth covering her face, revealing a hideous countenance.

One side of her current face was covered in ugly scars, the skin appearing reddish-black, while the other side had many small wounds and scabs.

However, it was clearly a male face.

This was a Magic Mask Furan had bought for two gold coins at the Apprentice Market. When she first bought it, there were no scars, but Furan had intentionally made her face look like this following the included tutorial.

"An explosion happened by accident during an experiment."

Seeing that the Enforcer hadn't spoken for a long time, Furan knew he was somewhat frightened by this face, so she explained calmly.

The Enforcer's breathing quickened significantly. He froze for a moment before asking the next question.

"Do you have your School badge?"

"I forgot to bring it. I thought I was just coming to dump a body."

Furan said. It wasn't that she didn't want to forge one, but rather that no one on the market dared to forge this badge. She had thought about making one herself, but she didn't know the details, so she had to give up.

As it turned out, the Enforcers weren't like the School administrators who would directly reprimand an apprentice for not wearing a badge, saying it brought shame to the School.

"Then go back over there. I can't let you go right now without a badge. You can only leave after we finish checking everyone. This is our regulation, please understand."

Furan didn't respond and silently returned to the crowd.

There was nothing she could do about it. She would just have to endure a bit longer.

Next, Furan saw that those apprentices who showed their badges were allowed to leave directly after a couple of questions. There were also apprentices like her who couldn't produce a badge and ended up returning to the crowd.

I hope nothing else happens, Furan hoped inwardly as she watched the crowd of un-questioned people grow smaller.

"Investigator... Sir, please come over here!"

An Enforcer's face was full of terror. He walked out trembling, holding a Body Bag, his hands shaking incessantly.

"Damn it, how did they find even this... It looks like I'll have to take action." Furan frowned, thinking to herself.

Furan looked at Kalv, who was walking toward the Enforcer, knowing that as long as she took him down, she could run directly. Spell fluctuations that were difficult to detect began to flicker on her hands.

Kalv walked curiously toward the Enforcer and spoke:

"What did you find?"

"It's the one you mentioned..."

Before he could finish, Kalv suddenly felt a sense of crisis attacking from behind. However, it was difficult for Kalv to make a timely move.

With a 'crack', a yellow shield lit up around Kalv, barely blocking the attack and giving Kalv time to react to the emergency.

But Kalv had spent all these years preparing for the Investigator Assessment. The combat content of that exam was quite minimal; most of it tested the laws of the Alliance. It wasn't a job that strictly required combat power.

So he only cast a [Command Evil Spirit] Spell. However, the evil spirit he had cultivated was not the kind seen everywhere that could be easily dispersed by a single Spell.

A "crack" sounded, and Kalv knew his shield had shattered. However, his evil spirit had already appeared behind the opponent. As long as the evil spirit attacked... However, what Kalv felt was a massive force squeezing the back of his neck, as if it were about to crush his bones. Along with it came a familiar Spell fluctuation.

[Disorderly Touch], a basic Spell of the Modification School. Its effect is that the person touched will feel nausea, dizziness, and unbearable discomfort, directly controlling the opponent and making it difficult for them to move.

It sounded like a very powerful control skill, but in actual combat, it would be difficult to work for various reasons. First of all, it required your Spiritual Power to be higher than the opponent's, and you had to touch them.

Everyone is a mage; isn't it better to cast skills from a distance? Why fight you at close range?

In actual combat, almost all mages would subconsciously keep their distance, no matter who the opponent was, so this Spell was slightly useless.

If I want to control the opponent, wouldn't it be better to use a [Dizzying Ray]? Why get close? Therefore, this Spell was rarely used, which was also the reason for the low Spell intensity of the Modification School; it was difficult to find opportunities to use it.

"A Formal Mage?!"

Kalv could feel that the opponent's Spiritual Power not only exceeded his own—and he had been a mage for two years—but they also seemed to possess a Specialty in Modification School Spells, resulting in him being completely suppressed.

This was because after Furan met the promotion requirements for the Modification School, her Spiritual Power had increased to 10.7, making this Spell very useful when cast naturally.

Kalv now felt dizzy and nauseous... The increase in Spell effect brought by that powerful Spiritual Power was no joke, not to mention that his defense had been breached at close range.

He was now unable to perform focused spellcasting and seemed about to faint the next second. However, as long as his evil spirit launched an attack... Wait, where was his evil spirit? Why hadn't it interrupted the opponent's Spell yet?

Just before fainting, Kalv saw his evil spirit fall from the sky. A transparent hand was death-gripping the evil spirit's neck, pinning it to the ground so it couldn't move.
