Chapter 86 - Chapter 83: Self-Created Spell (Part 2)

"It doesn't seem very powerful; it can't be used as an offensive Spell."

Elan was surprised that Furan could actually release a new Spell, but after thinking about it carefully, it seemed this Spell didn't have much of a purpose. Its power wasn't great, so what could it do?

Although this seemed to satisfy the trial of creating a Spell, the Spell itself appeared useless... "I can still increase the power, but it's best used in a confined environment to have significant offensive force," Furan explained.

Had she not been mindful of the many scattered small items in this room, she would have performed a demonstration for Elan on the spot, showing him what it meant to make everything in the room fly.

Furthermore, the Spell she designed wasn't meant to be used directly as a means of attack; it was intended to work in conjunction with another Spell she was developing.

"I have another Spell I haven't finished designing yet. It only has a real purpose when combined with this one."

"Oh? Tell me about it."

Elan turned back to look at Furan with an incredulous gaze.

In Elan's view, the previous Spell was actually already qualified. As a newly created Spell, and judging by the magical fluctuations Elan had felt, it was definitely a qualified Spell.

He knew Furan hadn't used the full power of the Spell just now, which was why it didn't seem to deal much damage.

Those signature Spells of the Schools had all undergone long periods of modification to become what they were now; they were almost beyond further improvement, having reached their peak.

For Furan to be able to cast a Spell so fluently was already quite rare.

Although to him, this Spell looked a lot like one from the Elemental School; the way it mobilized elemental power was very similar to the Elemental School Spells he had seen.

It was likely that Harbos had explained to Furan how many Elemental School Spells were cast, allowing Furan to use that knowledge to create her own.

However, because Furan was not a student of the Elemental School, Harbos would not have explained their Spells to her.

To be able to create such a Spell without knowing any Elemental School Spells herself showed just how much magical talent Furan possessed.

Of course, Furan had only been able to quickly create Steam Jet by secretly learning spells; Elan had no way of knowing this.

"The second Spell I'm thinking of is to convert the steam sprayed by this Spell into kinetic energy, just like the steam engine I made."

Even though Elan hadn't understood the blueprints Furan had given him last time, he still knew the function of the steam engine she made: converting thermal energy into mechanical energy and then having the machine output force.

"How far along is it?"

"It should be soon. It's just that I haven't constructed the Spell model yet. If I had other Spells to reference, I'd be done by now... It should take another two weeks."

Elan looked at Furan in disbelief. It had to be said that Furan had been constantly refreshing his perception of her since that weapon forging class.

He hadn't expected Furan to have such talent in every aspect of being a mage, especially in the area of creating Spells.

If Elan possessed a talent for creating Spells like Furan's, perhaps he would already be a Second-Tier Mage by now.

Wait... Elan suddenly thought of something terrifying. Furan had now completed two of the trials, so all that remained for her was to achieve a certain rank in the Assessment.

And that rank... he felt it might be a bit too easy for Furan.

Furan could achieve a middle rank just with her swordsmanship alone, let alone adding the Spells she already knew.

With such a setup, the probability of Furan taking first place was definitely not small; even if she didn't get first, she would definitely be in the top ten.

And with those ranks, it was almost impossible not to complete the third trial. It seemed she would become a Formal Mage by the end of this year.

He still remembered the first time he saw Furan and learned she was an apprentice from Cuilan Academy; he had specifically looked up her records.

The records were very clear: Furan was fourteen when she enrolled, and she was fifteen this year.

Normally, apprentices should be sent to Apprentice City around age sixteen, but the orphanage where Furan stayed as an orphan had closed due to a lack of funding. It just so happened that Furan's Spiritual Power talent was detected then, and the recruiter at the time brought her to the academy specifically because she had nowhere else to go.

If Furan successfully promoted to Formal Mage at the end of the year, that meant she would be a Formal Mage at fifteen. Her birthday was in March, and promoting to Formal Mage at this age was absolutely shocking.

One could even say Furan would be the youngest Formal Mage since the founding of Apprentice City, enough to leave a mark in the city's history.

In other parts of the Alliance, even those mage families rarely had someone promote to Formal Mage at this age, and they received magical education from childhood.

What was even more shocking was that if Furan promoted at the end of the year, the time from when she started learning magic to becoming a Formal Mage would only be two years.

This further highlighted Furan's talent. Children of mage families learned magic from childhood to have a high probability of promotion and to promote so much earlier.

For other apprentices in Apprentice City, the average time to promote to Formal Mage was five years; this was how long it took most people to go from apprentice to Formal Mage.

Once it exceeded six years, the probability of promoting to Formal Mage shrank infinitely, because with magic, if you can't learn it, you just can't learn it.

In the history of Apprentice City, the number of apprentices who promoted after more than six years was barely more than could be counted on two hands.

The same was true looking back. The fastest promotion Elan had heard of was an overlooked child from a mage family who took three and a half years to successfully promote after coming to Apprentice City.

Elan himself had promoted to Formal Mage at the start of his fourth year. At the time, he was quite smug, considering himself a genius and thinking he could reach Second-Tier Mage in another four years.

But after the Edict School was driven out of Apprentice City, he wanted to apply to be an Investigator to obtain resources for promotion, only to be told that his School was not registered in Apprentice City and he wasn't allowed to apply.

When he went to other places in the Alliance to apply, the staff simply told him to please go to the place where he promoted to Formal Mage to apply.

This matter had left him extremely frustrated.

In the end, he could only stay in Apprentice City doing administrative work. As for promotion, he hadn't moved a single step further than his newly promoted self.

So when Celine ordered him to contact Harbos, he didn't resist the disruption of his peaceful life of many years. He just had complex feelings, feeling a bit lost as to whether he still had the determination to promote.

"Very good. Go prepare for the Assessment; your involvement here shouldn't be needed for the time being."

He knew that with Furan's talent for creating Spells, combined with a mentor who was a Fourth-Tier Mage, Furan's future could never stop at the First-Tier; she would likely reach the Second-Tier very quickly.
