"Motherf***er!"
Nick Fury roared furiously in front of the surveillance monitors inside his office.
His eyes were locked onto the now-black screen, filled with anxiety and unease.
He had no idea where Chen Ye had teleported Carol Danvers, and that uncertainty deeply disturbed him.
Originally, his plan had been flawless. Carol's power was the key to fighting the coming war.
But now everything had descended into chaos, and he could no longer predict whether Carol would return in time.
Fury's brows were tightly furrowed, as if they could squeeze out water. Deep concern filled his eyes.
He knew that in just a few days, his position as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be handed over, and that fact placed unprecedented pressure on him.
His obsession with control made it impossible for him to accept a situation beyond his grasp. The feeling was like a king stripped of his throne—helpless and furious.
What made him even more uneasy was that he had recently noticed many unfamiliar faces appearing inside S.H.I.E.L.D. These were people he didn't recognize, likely arranged by the next director.
It gave him a sense of being excluded, as though his world was gradually being invaded by others.
He could feel his control slipping away, and that loss of control terrified him.
The atmosphere in the office was so oppressive it was hard to breathe.
Coulson stood nearby, not daring to speak.
He knew Fury was in an extremely bad mood, so he could only silently wait for further orders.
"Go bring in the military," Fury suddenly said. "This time we're cooperating with them. We're going to completely wipe out the cancer known as Hell's Kitchen."
His voice was filled with determination and decisiveness.
Fury continued:
"And notify the federal government. Tell them we're eliminating Hell's Kitchen for the safety of the public. Have them prepare the media narrative and make sure the civilians see us as the righteous side."
"Also gather the Avengers and the X-Men. Nobody goes anywhere these next two days. Once public opinion is fully stirred up and the federal authorization comes through, we move immediately."
Coulson immediately nodded and left the office.
He knew Fury's decision meant a massive operation was about to begin—one that would severely test their capabilities.
As Fury's orders spread through S.H.I.E.L.D., the entire organization sprang into action.
Personnel from every department began preparing rapidly and efficiently. Everyone understood the importance of this mission and the responsibilities resting on their shoulders.
At the same time, the military, the Avengers, and the X-Men all began receiving notifications.
One after another, they put aside their current tasks and rapidly assembled.
Meanwhile, inside another office within S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, the atmosphere was equally tense.
Crossbones, an important HYDRA member, frowned deeply as he voiced his dissatisfaction to Director Pierce.
"Director, Nick Fury's actions this time are way too extreme. He didn't even notify you. That's clearly disrespecting you as the incoming director."
His tone carried obvious resentment and provocation toward Fury.
Director Pierce sat calmly behind his desk, adjusting his glasses, his gaze deep and unreadable.
Looking at the busy S.H.I.E.L.D. agents outside the window, he said quietly:
"Perhaps… this is Nick Fury's final madness."
Crossbones froze for a moment, clearly not expecting Pierce to view the situation so calmly.
Frowning, he asked in confusion:
"Aren't we going to stop him? Shouldn't we make Nick Fury understand who's really in charge here?"
Pierce turned around and looked at Crossbones, a meaningful glint flashing through his eyes.
He slowly set down his glasses and said:
"Why would we stop him?"
Crossbones became even more confused.
He didn't understand why Pierce was so indifferent to Fury's provocation. Normally, Pierce hated when Fury stole the spotlight from him.
"We not only shouldn't stop him," Pierce continued, "we should help him. This time, we can't send all of our own people out."
Hearing this, Crossbones became alarmed.
After all, they couldn't just send their own men to die. The people in Hell's Kitchen weren't weak.
Pierce explained:
"This time, I believe Nick Fury only launched this operation because he's completely confident of victory. So I'm sending you there to clean up the spoils afterward… and if necessary, kill Fury's people too."
Pierce understood Fury extremely well.
With Fury's scheming and cautious personality, he would never start a war unless he believed victory was guaranteed.
Even though Chen Ye and Hell's Kitchen were indeed powerful, they still couldn't compare to the full might of the federal government operating at maximum capacity.
Crossbones immediately understood Pierce's true intention.
This was about eliminating obstacles.
Still, he asked:
"But if Nick Fury wins, won't your position be in danger?"
After all, if Fury completed the mission perfectly, the director's chair would never fall to Pierce.
That was Crossbones' greatest concern.
But Pierce merely smiled.
"No matter what happens," he said calmly, "after this war… he won't survive."
His words radiated confidence and cold ruthlessness, as though everything was already under his control.
From the very beginning, he had never intended to let Nick Fury live.
He had already arranged personnel and plans, preparing to deliver Fury a fatal blow at the critical moment.
Pierce firmly believed that in the end, he would be the true victor.
Hearing this, Crossbones felt a chill run through him.
He understood now:
Pierce wasn't merely trying to weaken Fury's faction—he intended to eliminate Fury entirely.
"He wants public opinion to spread, right?" Pierce added casually. "HYDRA has plenty of people in the media. Tell our people below to cooperate."
"Yes, sir."
Crossbones turned and left immediately to carry out the orders.
He knew he had to act quickly to avoid missing this rare opportunity.
Pierce watched Crossbones leave and muttered softly to himself:
"What a pity… this war can only have one winner. And that winner will be me. Everything you worked so hard for will simply become my wedding dress."
A trace of anticipation and viciousness flashed through his eyes, as though he could already see himself standing as the final victor.
From beginning to end, neither Nick Fury nor Pierce ever believed Chen Ye and Hell's Kitchen could win.
To them, Hell's Kitchen was nothing more than a sacrificial pawn in their struggle for power.
