Violet staggered back, as though Lucien had struck her with his hand instead of his words. She clutched at the juncture of skin between her neck and shoulder with one desperate hand, keenly feeling how the clear skin proved the lack of a mating mark. Suddenly, I felt perversely proud of the two mating marks that were present on me, even if one was a half-done thing that caused me a lot of pain.
