Dr. Hornsby was an alpha in his mid-sixties with kind gray eyes and a booming laugh. He was the doctor who'd treated Lukas all the way through his illness.
After going through that heartbreaking experience with him, Dr. Hornsby knew me well. He'd been exposed to my good side and my very worst side. I'd leaned on him hugely during that horrible time, and I considered him a friend.
He came right away after Mrs. Gentry called him. I felt better the minute he arrived and led him up to Asa, who was still sleeping. I gently woke Asa, and he sat up, looking drowsy.
"Dr. Hornsby is here to examine you," I said softly. Asa nodded, still looking sleepy. "Oh, right."
"We'll let you sleep some more as soon as I check you over." Moving closer, Dr. Hornsby put a thermometer between Asa's lips. "Rest is the best medicine."
I wrinkled my brow. "I kept hoping he'd sleep this off."
