Chapter 91 - Chapter 91: Pursuit of Life

The last day of the Cannes Film Festival is the closing ceremony and also the awards ceremony, and the red carpet in front of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes is the largest.

Many Hollywood big stars choose to attend the red carpet ceremony today. Angelina Jolie appeared cool and chic in a black suit, and Brad Pitt also made a grand appearance with his wife, Jennifer Aniston.

Charles found the Coen Brothers, independent filmmakers exhibiting at the Cannes Film Festival, and handed them the novel "no country for old men."

The Coen Brothers came to the Cannes Film Festival this time because their work, the black comedy "The Ladykillers" starring Tom Hanks, was selected for the festival's main competition unit!

The Coen Brothers have a special project next year, but they can start writing the script for the novel "no country for old men" after their current project is finished.

The Palais des Festivals is quite large, with not only 15 theaters, but also the largest Lumière Grand Auditorium where the awards ceremony is held. There are also nightclubs, casinos, and numerous conference rooms.

While the 57th Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony was underway, Charles was hosting a filmmaking couple in his hotel suite.

The director James Mangold and his producer wife Cathy Konrad had a script they had been developing for several years and were looking for investment.

"A Johnny Cash biopic," Charles carefully read their proposal. Johnny Cash was a famous American country music master, born in the 1930s and passed away last year, and his second wife also passed away.

Cathy Konrad introduced, "We mainly focus on Johnny Cash's story of falling to rock bottom due to drug addiction after becoming famous, but then recovering and achieving new heights with the help of his second wife."

"We also brought Johnny's good friend James Keach into the team for the script. For the lead roles, we chose Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. This is definitely going to be a fantastic movie!"

Joaquin Phoenix is a very good actor, and the actress Reese Witherspoon is also well-known because of "legally blonde."

Charles was already smiling internally. Isn't this "walk the line"? And James Mangold and Cathy Konrad had received guidance from the Cash couple multiple times when adapting the script.

Moreover, the Cash couple had also designated Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as the best choices to portray them!

"The script is good, and the story is also great. It's very inspiring and full of love!" Charles said, putting down the proposal.

"So will Capet Pictures support it?" James asked somewhat happily.

"Capet Pictures will develop this film. Both of you can start preparations as soon as possible, ideally for release next year. Capet Pictures has decided to start distributing its own films this year!" Although Charles considered whether to switch to an actress under his mother, he gave up the idea since Reese Witherspoon had received so much support.

"Without any surprises, the film can start shooting in just three or four months," Cathy Konrad said.

"Alright, when we return to Los Angeles, you can submit the budget to the company," Charles said. Perhaps his biggest gain from this trip to the Cannes Film Festival was developing "walk the line."

After seeing off James Mangold and Cathy Konrad, Charles called Philip to inquire about "house of flying daggers."

"Sony Pictures Classics paid 15.5 million US dollars for the North America distribution rights, while European distribution was acquired by other distribution companies," Philip explained. Capet Pictures' offer of 14 million US dollars only made Sony Pictures Classics hesitate for a short while.

"Don't worry about it. If Sony Pictures Classics wants it, let them distribute it. This time you talked to many European distributors about cooperation. How did it go?" Capet Pictures was going to build a distribution channel, and the overseas market also needed to be prepared. Getting to know more overseas distributors is always a good thing.

"I've met several distribution companies. They've shown due interest in Capet Pictures' films, and the potential for future cooperation is high," Philip used to work in distribution, and overseas pre-sale rights have always been an important channel for independent film companies to raise funds.

Charles nodded. This would certainly bring more trouble, having to negotiate with each one individually, and the film release schedule would be difficult to determine.

If The Big Six had their own complete channels overseas, they could release films simultaneously in many countries and regions worldwide.

"Let's take it slow. For now, we should focus on building our distribution channels in North America. Overseas distribution will come step by step later," Charles understood the saying that haste makes waste.

"By the way, I met with a representative from EuropaCorp this time. Luc Besson invited you, boss, to visit Paris!" Philip continued.

"I am indeed interested in EuropaCorp, which Luc Besson founded. It just so happens that I plan to depart for Paris tomorrow!" Charles was very happy to meet this great French director. This was a rare French commercial film director!

EuropaCorp was built entirely on the Hollywood model, hoping to integrate European cinema to compete against Hollywood.

After Philip left, Charles changed his clothes and left the hotel for the port, boarding a previously rented luxury yacht over thirty feet long.

Marion Cotillard was on the deck, enjoying the sea breeze and sipping champagne. When she saw Charles return, she immediately pulled him down to sit.

"Is everything handled?" Marion Cotillard asked, handing Charles a glass of champagne.
