Ava's Pov:
I was halfway down the stairs when I heard Caroline's voice, "Going somewhere?"
I stopped and rolled my eyes before I kept walking.
She was leaning against the wall near the living room, arms crossed, watching me like she'd been waiting.
"I was just going to get something to eat," I said.
She nodded slowly, then pushed herself off the wall and walked closer.
"Can we talk for a second?"
Her tone didn't sound like she was giving me a choice but I agreed anyway.
"Sure."
She glanced toward the hallway, like she was checking if anyone was around, then looked back at me.
"I'm just going to be honest with you, and I'll make it as clear as possible for you to understand," she said.
Even though I found that a bit offensive, I let her finish.
"I don't like you."
It was so direct that it almost didn't register at first.
"…Okay," I said after a second.
She studied my face, probably expecting a bigger reaction.
