Chapter 62
The monsters had halted their progress.
When Doris looked in front of the monster army, the rat-like monster was standing at its forefront.
Only its appearance resembled a rat; it was actually 1 meter in size and had thick fur. It looked at the distant town wall with blood-red eyes, watching it cautiously.
The deadlock continued.
Neither side tried to do anything for some time.
The battle that had been going on since noon had come to a halt.
Even if Doris tried to take advantage of this situation, he had no option.
They had barely enough hands to defend the town wall, let alone actively charge ahead at monsters.
Vivian looked sharply at the monster army.
Low-grade monster corpses littered all around, mixed with some high-grade ones.
Her knights had been holding themselves well since the start of the battle.
Their camp was located outside the boundary of the traps.
The town was surrounded by hills on one side, while the other had a bushy area with medium-sized trees.
To deal with the numbers that would emerge from either side, they were stationed strategically. Due to time constraints, they didn't employ any traps in both areas.
Now their position became vital because the knights had had their hands full since the start of the battle, dealing with mid- and low-grade monsters trying to break through.
Vivian personally took care of all the high-grade ones.
They were lucky enough not to encounter any intelligent monster.
But now one had shown up.
And it already commanded caution, with the battle in a deadlock.
"Commander," Ashvin called Doris.
Doris gritted his teeth.
"We will wait and see. Put mages to rest in turns and keep watch."
His command was relayed throughout the wall.
The sun started setting behind the hills.
The monsters still weren't moving.
A flare signal was shot by the time the sun had completely set.
The reinforcements were near.
Doris broke mana crystals and sent an urgent magic communication request to the in-charge professor, Serbian.
After communicating with him about the situation, they came up with a detailed plan.
The reinforcements will attack rear-end of monsters and mages will draw attention of frontline mosnters.
Either way they couldn't afford to simply run because monsters will follow them.
So a detailed discussion was done and they came up with an idea.
Mages got busy.
Townspeople were slowly moving in unison.
A cold breeze blew.
Night had set. It was 8 p.m. now.
Doris stood on the wall inspecting the whole situation.
Monsters still hadn't crossed the boundary.
He slowly lifted his hand and gave a signal to start.
Booooooooooom!
An explosion went off.
Mages started actively bombarding the monster frontline with long-range spells.
The monsters were disturbed, and some tried to charge out.
Screeeeeeeeeeech!
A loud scream resounded in the dead of night in the middle of the spell bombardment.
The monsters shrank back in fear and retreated further away.
Boooooooooooom!
Boooooooooooom!
Boooooooom!
Explosions went off in a distant area behind the monster army as well.
The reinforcement force had started their pincer attack.
The rat monster looked up and started sniffing.
The explosions continued going off.
The monster army was growing restless with each passing minute.
Grrrrrrrrrr!
The rat monster's hair stood on end, and a growl resounded.
The monsters went into a frenzy and started scratching the earth with their paws.
It gave a low howl and charged toward the town wall.
"Brace for impact!"
Doris's voice resounded urgently.
He started writing a complicated spell.
The monster army was charging ahead.
Traps were going off nonstop.
But it didn't stop the monsters' charge.
They stepped over injured and dead monsters, rapidly closing the distance.
Light flares were surrounding the whole area, illuminating the night.
400 meters.
Behind the army, another large explosion went off.
300 meters.
Ashvin gave his report. They were done with evacuation of townspeople.
200 meters.
Doris cojured mana.
Until now, the rat monster had avoided all the traps and continued its charge.
Doris was preparing to engage with it himself.
Boooooooooooom!
The earth erupted, and lava arrows started attacking the rat from all sides.
The rat monster screeched and lunged into the air to directly attack Doris.
Doris now had his complete attention occupied.
Azek looked at the field.
Bullets were dancing all around, taking on monsters and exploding their skulls, but there was no end to these abominations.
He looked toward the rat monster, which was fully focused on Doris.
A bullet left his hand and aimed for the monster's head.
The rat monster sensed it immediately and retreated, but Azek wasn't actually aiming for its head.
It continued toward its body, and the rat monster continuously tried to shake off the bullet, but it was as if the bullet had a will of its own, following the rat everywhere and not giving it a chance to shake it off.
Lava arrows continued attacking, but it was like the monster had eyes in the back of its head as well, always avoiding getting critically injured.
Azek noticed:
It was extremely perceptive to attacks threatening its life. It always managed to avoid critical strikes.
He let out a breath.
He slowly steadied himself, focusing on the monster's legs.
If I don't attack with killing intent, what will happen?
He started attacking all its limbs with the sole purpose of confining it to one place.
Tuck. Crack.
All four attacks landed on their marks.
The bullets came out on the other sides of its thin legs.
It continued attacking.
Slowly.
One of the bullets exploded.
Screeeeech!
The monster howled.
Doris only needed that opening.
Lava arrows landed on all its previously injured areas.
But unlike before, they didn't burn the area.
They lodged into its body deeper and deeper.
The monster continued howling in pain.
The army trotting behind went into a crazy fit and tried to cross the distance despite getting heavily injured.
The lava arrows continued going deep, and Doris completed another spell.
A small arrow shot out and pierced the monster's skull.
Pssssssss—
The head started giving off smoke.
The monster didn't scream.
Smoke surrounded its body.
Slowly, its body disintegrated, with all the lava arrows melting its insides.
The monster army behind still continued its charge.
One hundred meters.
They were in the red zone.
