Chapter 100: Poor Demigod

The petrification reversed the way it had arrived — not gradually, but all at once, the specific return of motion to things that had been entirely without it, the stone quality departing from the group's skin like a tide going out.

Eight demigods came back to themselves in the particular sequence of people who have been somewhere they couldn't reach consciously and are returning to find that time has continued without them.

They looked at each other. They looked at their hands. They looked at Rango, who was standing in front of the Gorgon queen's remains doing the specific thinking-while-looking-at-something-else that people did when they were running a problem that had more dimensions than the immediate surface suggested.

The group's reassembly conversation had the specific quality of post-crisis demigod discussion — the precise mixture of tactical analysis, genuine relief, and the kind of hero mythology that people reached for when they needed a framework for something that exceeded their current one.

"He killed a Gorgon queen with a mortal body."

"Mortals can't do that. One of his parents has to be an Olympian."

"The way he moved — could be Hermes. Speed like that."

"He doesn't look like a son of Hermes."

"He could be Apollo's. The confidence, the—"

"He's not a son of Apollo," said a voice from the edge of the group.

Ted, from Tyson's shoulder, was looking at the speculation with the specific expression of someone who has personal knowledge of the subject and is deciding how much to contribute.

"How do you know?" one of the demigods asked.

"I know his father," Ted said. "Pete Winchester. Completely human. Very capable, occasionally wrong about small things, deeply right about large ones." He paused. "No divine parentage. Some things are just the person."

The group processed this.

"Then how—"

"Some things," Ted said again, "are just the person."

Mavis, in bat form on Rango's other shoulder, looked at the group with the specific attention of someone encountering an entire category of people she hadn't known existed.

"Are all of their parents gods?" she said, to Ted, in the low register.

"One parent," Ted said. "One human, one Olympian. The demigod is the result."

Mavis considered this. "That must be very complicated for the human parent."

"Presumably," Ted said.

"And for the child," Mavis said.

Ted looked at her. "Yes," he said. "Especially for the child."

Annabeth helped her group to their feet with the practiced efficiency of someone who had been doing this — bringing people back from bad situations — for long enough that the practice had become default. She checked each of them the way you checked people after something significant: eyes, hands, the specific inventory of a field leader confirming everyone was functional.

She was aware of the ache that Rango's teaching method had left behind and was choosing not to be distracted by it.

She was also, and she was not fully acknowledging this to herself yet, reviewing the specific combat assessment she'd formed of him during the engagement — the closing speed, the specific geometry of the approach that had kept his gaze on the collarbone rather than the eyes, the way the dragon-aura quality (she didn't have a better name for it) had produced a pressure in the air around him that the Gorgons had registered and briefly adjusted their tracking to account for.

He used the interval that created, she noted. He planned for the interval.

A daughter of Athena recognized tactical planning. She didn't always like the person doing it. The recognition was independent of the preference.

She filed it.

Rango was looking at the Gorgon queen's head.

Which was still active.

This was the part of the mythology that the films tended to address by having Perseus put the head in a bag, which was narratively practical but raised questions about what happened to the bag, which was one of the many questions that emerged when you applied logistics to mythology and found that mythology had not been designed with logistics in mind.

The head was still hissing. The snakes were still operational. The petrification mechanism was clearly present in whatever infrastructure allowed a severed head to remain functional.

"You have to burn it," Annabeth said, from behind him. "Completely. Ancient monsters of this class regenerate unless the destruction is total."

"That's the standard approach," Rango said.

"Yes," she said.

"I'm not taking the standard approach," he said.

She looked at him.

He turned back to Toothless's travel bag and found what he was looking for by feel — the specific texture of cloth that was several thousand years old and had been wrapped around Cleopatra's ankles, which was a sentence he was still adjusting to.

He looked at the head.

At the snakes.

At the specific petrification mechanism that required eye contact to function, which meant that covering the eyes should — in theory — disrupt the mechanism at the source rather than at the symptom.

"Mavis," he said.

She was already on his shoulder. "Two meters right, then forward," she said, her echolocation already running, the bat's spatial mapping providing what his eyes couldn't safely provide. "The head is approximately forty degrees down from your current angle. The snakes are tracking your heat signature but they don't have the same mechanism as the eyes — they won't petrify you."

"Good to know," Rango said.

He closed his eyes.

Moved the two meters.

Moved forward.

Mavis's guidance came in small, precise corrections — left, down slightly, forward, stop — the specific language of someone who had been doing echolocation navigation her entire life and had just found a practical application for it.

He crouched.

Found the snakes by touch — they were alive and not happy about being touched, but alive-and-unhappy was a manageable situation — and wrapped the ankle cloth around the head's eyes with the care of someone handling something that was significant in multiple directions simultaneously.

The snakes went quiet.

Not dead — quiet, the specific stillness of something that had its operational input removed and had defaulted to standby.

The hissing stopped.

The head was still, the specific still of something that had been a specimen for longer than it had been a monster.

He opened his eyes.

"Huh," Rango said.

He looked at Mavis.

She was looking at the wrapped head with the specific expression of someone who has just contributed to something and is surprised and pleased by how well it went.

He picked up the head carefully — the snakes moved slightly at the disturbance but didn't reactivate — and put it in the bag.

The demigods around him were conducting the specific behavior of people who have watched something happen that doesn't fit their operational framework and are recalibrating.

"What is that cloth?" Annabeth said.

"Cleopatra's ankle wrapping," Rango said.

She looked at him.

"It was a birthday gift," he said. "From a mummy named Murray."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

"The mythology suggests the Gorgon queen's head retains its properties after death," she said, returning to operational ground. "If you're carrying that—"

"The cloth is keeping the mechanism offline," Rango said. "If the cloth comes off, don't look at the bag."

"I was going to say: if you're carrying that, you have one of the most powerful weapons available to anyone who's ever engaged with the Greek supernatural taxonomy." She paused. "Perseus turned Atlas to stone with it. Changed the geography of North Africa."

Rango looked at the bag on Toothless's back.

"Murray's going to be insufferable about this," Ted said.

"Murray doesn't know we have it," Rango said.

"Murray will find out," Ted said. "Murray always finds out. He's been tracking significant artifacts for several thousand years. It's his primary occupation."

The trial debrief was the specific conversation that happened when a group had completed an objective and discovered that someone else had done the significant part.

The one-eyed youth — Tyson, he'd introduced himself with the specific sincerity of someone who had been told his whole life that he was unusual and had arrived at a point of simply stating his name and letting people draw their own conclusions — looked at the bag and then at Rango with the expression of someone making peace with the situation.

"The trial objective was to reinforce the seal on Medusa's bloodline," he said. "We've completed the technical component. The head being — contained — is actually a more comprehensive containment than the seal we were going to apply." He paused. "But the camp is going to have questions about where the head went."

"Tell them the truth," Rango said. "Medusa's bloodline descendant was contained by a traveling supernatural investigator using a Ptolemaic artifact. All components currently stable." He looked at Tyson. "If they want more detail, they can contact Annabeth. She witnessed the full sequence."

Annabeth, who had been listening to this with the specific expression of a daughter of Athena cataloguing a situation she was going to need to report accurately, nodded once.

"The church," Rango said. "That your people found traces of humans at. Where is it?"

Tyson looked at the forest.

"Fly," he said, "is not going to work. The dryads have been building over it for — I don't know how long, but it's covered. You can't see it from above." He extended his hand with the directness of someone who had already decided. "I remember the route. I'll take you."

Rango looked at him.

At the one eye, which tracked with the specific patient intelligence of a Cyclops who had spent his life having people decide what to do with the fact of him before deciding who he was.

"You're sure?" Rango said.

"I know the route," Tyson said. "And—" he paused — "you didn't react to what I am. When you first saw me." He said it matter-of-factly, as someone reporting an observation rather than asking for anything. "Most people react. You didn't."

"I've been at a Hotel Transylvania birthday party," Rango said. "My calibration has been updated."

Tyson's expression produced something that was, in Cyclops terms, the equivalent of an unguarded smile.

"Okay," he said. "Up, then. I'll navigate from Toothless's back."

He started toward Toothless.

Annabeth came with him.

Not as a concession — as a decision. She stood beside Tyson with the specific posture of someone who has weighed the options and chosen the one that keeps her in the situation rather than out of it.

"I don't like owing debts," she said, to Rango. "You saved my group. I'll help you find what you're looking for. After that we're square."

"You don't have to—" Rango started.

"I know I don't have to," she said. "I'm choosing to."

He looked at her.

At the daughter of Athena, who had been knocked down and gotten up and was now choosing to be useful rather than resentful.

"Okay," he said.

Toothless at altitude had the specific quality of flight that the How to Train Your Dragon films got exactly right — not the mechanical flight of something operating on thrust and lift, but the fluid flight of something that had been built for this specifically, that banked and adjusted with the ease of something for which the air was home rather than medium.

The Dark Forest spread below them in the way that forests spread from altitude — green, layered, the canopy's texture giving no indication of what it contained. Somewhere in it, covered by dryad construction that had apparently been growing for a significant period, was an abandoned church that the Curator had been seen near.

Tyson navigated from behind Rango with the steady confidence of someone who had memorized a route and trusted the memorization.

Annabeth was beside him, looking at the forest below with the tactical intelligence running continuously.

Mavis was in her human form now — she'd been shifting between forms with the ease of someone discovering that the shifting was effortless when the context was right, that the bat form and the human form were both simply her — and was sitting with her legs over Toothless's side watching the island from altitude with the expression of someone experiencing something they'd been told was coming and finding the reality larger than the description.

"You've never been this high," Rango said.

"I've been high in the castle," she said. "The top tower. But that's—" she looked at the forest below, at the ocean beyond the forest's edge, at the curve of the island's coast from up here — "contained. This is—" she stopped, because she didn't have the word for it.

"Yes," Rango said.

"Is it always like this?" she said. "Outside?"

"It's always something like this," he said. "Different each time, but always—" he thought about how his grandfather had described it in the letter, the specific line that had stayed with him. "Always larger than the version of it you had before you went."

Mavis looked at the ocean.

At the horizon, which was visible from here in a way it wasn't from any castle tower.

"Daddy's going to worry," she said.

"Dracula has been worrying about you for a hundred and eighteen years," Rango said. "He's good at it. He'll manage."

She almost smiled.

"He danced," she said.

"He did," Rango said.

"He hasn't done that since before I was born," she said. "Since—" she looked at her hands, at the specific complicated love of someone thinking about a parent who is grieving and has been for as long as she can remember. "He never talks about her. He talks to the painting, sometimes, when he thinks I'm asleep. But he never talks about her directly."

"He's protecting you," Rango said.

"I know," she said. "I know that's what it is." She looked at the horizon. "But I think maybe he's also protecting himself. And I think maybe it's time to stop."

Rango said nothing.

The specific nothing of someone who has heard something true and is letting it be true without adding to it.

Ted, from his position, said: "Back in Ghana—"

"Let it breathe," Rango said.

Ted stopped.

Mavis looked at the horizon.

Let it breathe.

Beside them, the conversation that Ted had been sitting on for twenty minutes finally became irresistible.

He turned to Annabeth.

"Your mother is Athena," Ted said.

"Yes," Annabeth said, with the tone of someone who has answered this question many times.

"Goddess of wisdom," Ted said. "Patron of craft and strategy. The virgin goddess."

"Yes," Annabeth said, slightly more careful.

"The specifically and theologically virgin goddess," Ted said. "Whose virginity is a significant component of her mythological identity, documented across multiple independent ancient sources."

"Yes," Annabeth said, now very careful.

"So," Ted said. "How exactly—"

"It's very complicated," Annabeth said.

"I'm patient," Ted said.

"It's specifically and theologically complicated," Annabeth said. "In a way that involves the difference between literal and functional interpretations of divine attributes across different historical periods of—"

"She appeared to his father in a dream," Tyson said, helpfully, from behind them. "And then Annabeth was there. In his mind, as an idea, and then—" he gestured at Annabeth — "here."

Annabeth looked at Tyson.

"You don't have to explain it," she said.

"He seemed genuinely curious," Tyson said. "And it's not a secret."

"It's—" Annabeth paused — "it is not a secret. It's just—"

"Complicated," Ted said. "Yes. You said."

"Yes," Annabeth said.

"So you're literally the daughter of wisdom," Ted said. "Born from an idea."

"In a manner of speaking," Annabeth said.

"That explains the tactical intelligence," Ted said. "And the willingness to help people you don't owe anything to, because the idea of you includes the understanding that help given freely is strategically sound." He looked at her. "Your mother made a good idea."

Annabeth looked at him.

The expression on her face was the specific one that appeared when someone encountered a compliment that was also an accurate analysis and didn't know which way to respond to it.

"Thank you," she said. "I think."

"You're welcome," Ted said. "I think."

Tyson made the sound that was, in Cyclops terms, the equivalent of a laugh.

"There," Tyson said.

Below them, in the canopy, a section that looked like it had been covered deliberately rather than grown naturally — the dryad work was visible from altitude now that Tyson had pointed it, the specific pattern of branches arranged in concealment rather than growth.

"The church is under that?" Rango said.

"Under and around," Tyson said. "The dryads built over it slowly. They don't like the stone — church stone is a different kind than forest stone, and the dryads can feel the difference. But they covered it rather than removed it." He paused. "My guess is they covered it because something inside it is something they're protecting rather than hiding."

Rango looked at the covered structure.

At the totem on his palm, which had shifted from the ambient warmth of the island to the specific warmth of something recognizing something nearby that it had been looking for.

"Take us down," he said.

Toothless folded his wings.

They descended.

The forest came up around them — the canopy, the filtered light, the Dark Forest's specific quality of somewhere that had been keeping something for a very long time and was now, finally, in the presence of someone who had come to collect it.

The covered church was visible from the ground in a way it hadn't been from the air — the stone visible between the dryad branches, old stone, the specific age of something that had been here longer than any of the island's current inhabitants.

Rango stood in front of it.

At the door — which the dryads had left accessible, Tyson had been right about the protection rather than hiding — and looked at the wood of the door frame.

His grandfather's name was carved into it.

Anderson Winchester — 1983 — unfinished.

Below it, recent — months old rather than decades, the carving still fresh in the wood:

Pete Winchester — 2018 — also unfinished.

Rango put his hand on the door.

Looked at the two names.

Ted, from his shoulder, said nothing.

Toothless pressed his head against Rango's back.

"Your father was here," Mavis said, quietly.

"Yes," Rango said.

"Two years ago," she said. "Before—"

"Before Los Angeles," Rango said.

He pushed the door open.
