Chapter 99: Is It Hard Not to Look at the Gorgon?
The group that had surrounded them was young — sixteen to twenty-two, most of them, with the specific physical quality of people who had been training seriously for long enough that the training had become their resting state. The weapons were real. The formation was practiced. The intention behind both was genuine rather than performed.
Annabeth Chase had her sword up and her eyes doing the specific assessment of a field commander who has encountered an unknown variable and is determining threat level in real time.
Rango had his hand away from the Colt.
Most of the group was human — demigod, technically, but human-adjacent in the ways that mattered for this particular moment, which was: they were people rather than entities, and the situation therefore had a different resolution space than most of what the island had presented so far.
"We came through the storm," Rango said. "Lost our group on arrival. We're looking for them." He kept his hands visible and his voice at the specific register of someone who is not planning anything and wants that to be legible. "We lit the fire because we needed to eat. We didn't know about the camp's perimeter."
Annabeth's sword didn't lower. "You came through the storm."
"Yes."
"Nobody comes through the storm."
"We came through the storm," Rango said. "I understand that's the existing model. The model appears to have exceptions."
She looked at Toothless.
At the bat on his shoulder — Mavis, who had settled there at some point and was watching the confrontation with wide, interested eyes that communicated zero threat and maximum curiosity.
At Ted.
At the blue face paint, which Rango had genuinely forgotten about until he registered her expression.
"The Night Fury," she said. "Where did you get a Night Fury?"
"He got me," Rango said. "I think the distinction—"
"Matters to him," Ted said, from the shoulder opposite Mavis. "Yes. We know."
Annabeth's eyes moved to Ted.
"Living bear," she said.
"Colleague," Rango said.
She processed this with the specific efficiency of someone who had been at Camp Half-Blood long enough that unusual information required acknowledgment rather than extended processing time.
"Who are you?" she said.
"Rango Winchester," he said. "My grandfather Anderson Winchester came through this forest forty years ago. He spent time at your camp. He said someone would come back."
Something moved in her expression — the specific shift of information landing against a framework that had been waiting for it.
"Anderson Winchester," she said.
"Yes."
"He helped us with the central forest approach," she said. "He knew things about this island that nobody had documented." She looked at Rango steadily. "He said his grandson would come."
"Grandson," Rango said. "Specifically."
"Specifically," she confirmed. "He was very particular about it."
She lowered the sword.
The group around them adjusted — not dispersing, maintaining positions, but the specific shift from ready-to-engage to ready-to-assess.
"Your companion," Annabeth said. "The historian with the camera. He's been at the camp for six hours arguing with a Satyr about the historical accuracy of Clash of the Titans."
"That's him," Rango said.
"The Satyr finds it flattering," she said. "The older campers are concerned about the documentation."
"He documents everything," Rango said. "It's his nature. He means no harm by it."
She nodded once — the field commander's nod of someone accepting a situation they can work with. "Come with us. We'll take you to camp."
They moved through the Dark Forest with the specific efficiency of a group that knew the territory — the demigods navigating the paths that the forest's moving-tree situation produced with the practiced ease of people who had been dealing with it for two months every year and had developed methods.
Mavis, from Rango's shoulder, was running her echolocation in the bat register — the small, barely-audible sounds that produced, for her, a complete picture of the forest's spatial arrangement that her eyes couldn't provide in the Dark Forest's specific darkness.
"The trees are moving," she said, quietly. "That way—" she indicated — "is where the path loops back on itself. We should go left."
Annabeth, who had been walking beside Rango for the last ten minutes in the specific silence of someone who had been beaten in a fight and hadn't decided what to do with that yet, looked at the bat.
"Echolocation," Rango explained.
"I know what echolocation is," Annabeth said. "I'm a daughter of Athena."
"Then you know it works for spatial mapping."
"Yes." She paused. "Is the bat—"
"A friend," Rango said.
Annabeth looked at the bat.
The bat looked at Annabeth with the large, warm, completely non-threatening eyes that made Dracula incapable of sustained firmness.
"The forest's movement pattern has a four-minute cycle," Annabeth said, to the bat, testing. "If you're reading it with echolocation, you should be picking up the root movement as a low-frequency vibration approximately eight seconds before the visible shift."
Mavis perked up. "Yes. Eight seconds, sometimes nine. It depends on how much moisture is in the ground."
Annabeth looked at Rango.
"She's a good navigator," she said.
"She's good at most things," Rango said. "She just hasn't had much opportunity to find out."
Something in Annabeth's expression shifted — the specific recognition of a situation she understood from a different angle than Rango intended. A daughter of Athena who had grown up in a camp that existed because the world outside was genuinely dangerous for what she was, who understood what it meant to be kept somewhere safe at the cost of somewhere larger.
She didn't say anything.
But she walked closer to Mavis's side for the remainder of the approach.
Camp Half-Blood on Skull Island was the specific version of Camp Half-Blood that existed in this place — the main camp in the ordinary world had Long Island, had the Big House, had decades of accumulated infrastructure. This version had the temporary-permanent quality of somewhere that had been set up every year for long enough that the temporary had become structural.
Cabins that corresponded to the Olympian parents. A training ground that showed the specific wear pattern of serious use. An armory. A fire at the center.
And in front of the fire, conducting a sustained monologue to a Satyr who had the expression of someone receiving extensive documentation of events they witnessed firsthand:
The Director.
Camera around his neck, still running. The bump on his forehead from the rock in Lilliput still visible, though someone had apparently cleaned and dressed it. His posture was the specific posture of a man who is in a completely extraordinary situation and is processing it through the only lens available to him, which was forty years of experience making the extraordinary legible through documentation.
He looked up when Rango came through the camp entrance.
His expression did several things in rapid succession — relief, followed by the specific vindication of someone who had been waiting to continue a conversation that had been interrupted by a tornado — and then he pointed at Rango's face.
"What happened to your face?" he said.
"Mavis," Rango said.
"Who is—" the Director registered the bat on Rango's shoulder and made the appropriate connection. "The vampire girl."
"Count Dracula's daughter," Rango confirmed.
The Director turned to the Satyr.
"Count Dracula," he said, with the specific tone of a man updating his documentation in real time, "has a daughter. Who does makeup."
The Satyr made a sound.
"I know," the Director said. "I know. I'm getting to the Gorgon section, just give me a moment."
Rango looked at the Satyr.
"Gorgon?" he said.
"There's a test," the Satyr said. "The campers do it every year before they return to the ordinary world. There's a Gorgon — well, several Gorgons — in the ruins section of the forest. Dealing with them is part of the curriculum." He looked at the Director. "He's been here six hours and he already has a preference for how we should be documenting it that I find both flattering and slightly aggressive."
"He's a historian," Rango said. "It's not personal."
"He told me the Clash of the Titans remake was 'cinematically ambitious but mythologically careless,'" the Satyr said. "I was in the original events."
"That does sound like him," Rango confirmed.
Annabeth found him by the training ground an hour later, when the camp's afternoon schedule was running and the Director had been redirected toward the archives by the Satyr, who had apparently decided that giving him something to document would be more productive than continuing to be documented.
"The test," she said. "It's happening this afternoon."
"I heard," Rango said.
"You're not in the camp's operational structure," she said. "You don't have to participate."
"Someone mentioned a Gorgon queen," Rango said. "Medusa's bloodline."
Annabeth looked at him. "The Gorgon queen's eyes petrify anything they make direct contact with. Demigod, monster, human — the mechanism doesn't discriminate." She held his gaze. "Perseus used a mirror shield and Athena's guidance. That's the established method."
"I don't have a mirror shield," Rango said.
"No," she said. "You don't."
"So the established method isn't available," he said.
"No," she said. "It isn't."
She was looking at him the way she'd looked at him when he'd come through the storm — the assessment of someone who had the full Athena tactical intelligence and was running it on a variable she didn't have a complete file on.
"How did your grandfather handle it?" she said.
Rango thought about the letter. About the specific passage that addressed the Dark Forest's central approaches and the entities that guarded them.
"He said the trick with things that can hurt you if you look at them," Rango said, "is to decide in advance what you're going to look at instead."
Annabeth considered this.
"That's either very wise or very stupid," she said.
"Usually both," Rango said. "At the same time."
The ruins were the specific kind of ruins that existed in places that had been inhabited by something significant for a very long time — stone that had been worked to specific purposes and had outlasted the purposes, columns that had held something up and were now holding up sky, the specific quality of a place that had been important and hadn't forgotten it.
The Gorgons came out of the ruins the way they came in every mythology that had ever addressed them — fast, purposeful, the snakes where hair should be with the specific biological intention of something that had evolved to be exactly what it was and found its existence entirely satisfactory.
The demigods moved well.
Rango watched this from the perimeter, assessing — the celestial bronze cutting through the Gorgon's armor-equivalent in a way that ordinary metal wouldn't, the camp's training showing in the coordination, the specific team-combat that Annabeth ran with the field instinct of someone who processed tactical geometry faster than most people processed traffic.
They were good.
They were handling it.
And then the ground cracked.
The Gorgon queen came up through it the way the mythology had always described — larger than the others, the upper body unshielded in the specific way of something that had never needed shields, the face carrying the kind of wrongness that eyes-that-petrify produced in the air around them before you actually looked, a pre-visual wrongness that the Dragon Heart aura registered before Rango's brain fully processed what he was seeing.

Annabeth had her eyes closed. She was still standing — she'd had her eyes shut at the moment of emergence, some tactical instinct or experience providing the half-second of warning she needed. She could hear what was around her. She couldn't see it.
"Behind you," she said, to what she could hear. "Forty meters. Moving left. I can't help you — I can't open my eyes without—"
"I know," Rango said.
He picked up a sword from the ground. Celestial bronze — it would do different things to a Gorgon queen than ordinary steel.
The Race Car Brain activated before he consciously decided to activate it — the red-blue charge running along his limbs, the perception shifting to the specific slowed register of very fast movement, the world becoming the version it became when he was running at speed.
The Gorgon queen was large and fast and the snakes were looking in every direction simultaneously, which was the specific challenge of something that had evolved eyes in multiple locations specifically to address the closing-your-eyes strategy.
Rango looked at her collarbone.
Not her eyes. Her collarbone — the specific anatomical point three inches below the throat, the reference point you used when you needed to track someone's movement without engaging the part of them that would cause you problems. His father's training, specifically. When something can hurt you if you meet its gaze, find a different geography to navigate by.
He moved.
The Gorgon queen tracked him — he could tell from the body movement, the orientation of the torso — and the snakes were looking at him, which produced the peripheral wrongness of the petrification mechanism attempting to engage without the direct line it required.
He didn't give it the direct line.
The sword found the right geometry at the right moment, and the Gorgon queen made a sound that was neither a roar nor a scream but something that was its own register entirely, and the head came off in the specific way that celestial bronze produced when it found the correct application.
Silence.
The snakes went still.
The queen's body completed its collapse with the specific trajectory of physics taking over from the supernatural.
Rango stood with the sword and looked at the collarbone region of what remained, because he hadn't looked up yet and wasn't going to until he was certain the mechanism was no longer operational.

He looked up.

"How," she said, and then stopped.
"My father taught me," Rango said. "When something can hurt you if you meet it directly — find what you can look at instead. Navigate by that."
She looked at the queen.
At the sword.
At Rango.
"The collarbone," she said.
"The collarbone," he confirmed.
She processed this with the full Athena tactical intelligence, which meant she had already run it against every documented engagement with petrification-class entities and had arrived at a conclusion.
"Nobody has ever done it that way," she said.
"First time for most things," Rango said.
He looked at the body.
Ted, from somewhere behind him, said: "Back in Ghana, there was a saying about things that could harm you if approached directly."
"What was it?" Annabeth said.
"The thing that blinds you," Ted said, "cannot also blind your feet." He paused. "It means: if you can't use your eyes, use something else. The body knows how to move even when the eyes are compromised."
Annabeth looked at Ted.
"Your colleague," she said, to Rango.
"My colleague," he confirmed.
She looked at the eight demigods coming back to themselves — checking their hands, their faces, the specific inventory of people who have just been somewhere else and are confirming the return.
Then she looked at Rango with the expression she'd had in the forest when he'd mentioned Anderson.
"Your grandfather," she said. "He said whoever came back would be able to do things that didn't have a method yet." She held his gaze. "He was describing you."
Rango looked at the forest.
At the Dark Forest's center, still ahead, still waiting, still holding whatever Anderson had started forty years ago and left unfinished.
"Not just me," he said. He looked at Mavis, who had returned to her human form at some point during the engagement and was standing at the ruins' edge with the wide-eyed expression of someone who has seen a significant thing and is fully present with it. At Ted. At Toothless, who had stayed at the perimeter and watched with the patient attention of something that knew its role in this moment was witness rather than participant.
"All of us," he said.
Annabeth looked at the group.
At the Night Fury.
At the vampire girl who had navigated the Dark Forest's moving trees by echolocation.
At the bear who had been in the field and knew what it meant.
At the man with the blue face paint and his grandfather's letter in his pocket and a totem in his palm that nothing in four hundred years of Dracula's documentation had produced a name for.
She made a decision.
"The central approach," she said. "I'll take you."
