Chapter 96: What the Island Keeps

The stairwell of Hotel Transylvania had the specific quality of a stairwell that had been in continuous use for a very long time by people who did not require the same things from architecture that humans did — the oil lamp Dracula carried threw light in the specific warm radius that oil lamps produced, and beyond that radius the dark was the kind of dark that didn't feel like absence so much as presence.

Rango had prepared himself, before the island, for several categories of encounter.

He'd mentally walked through the kong-scale creature possibility. The ancient entity predating the current supernatural order. The specific weirdness of an island that existed outside ordinary geography. He'd prepared for all of these with the specific mental pre-work of someone who had learned that preparation wasn't about anticipating the exact thing but about being in a state where the exact thing didn't collapse your ability to function.

He had not prepared for Count Dracula as a doting father.

This was a category failure on his part, and he acknowledged it.

Because the Dracula walking in front of him with the oil lamp — the specific Dracula of Hotel Transylvania (2012) rather than the Coppola version or the Stoker source or any of the other interpretations — was a man who had just been visibly, immediately, and completely overridden by his daughter's smile. The cold authority of four hundred years of vampire sovereignty had dissolved in approximately eight seconds when Mavis had looked at him and said birthday party.

Which made him, simultaneously, one of the most powerful supernatural entities Rango had encountered and one of the most comprehensible people he'd met on this island so far.

The totem had gone from the specific heat of encountering something at the top of the supernatural hierarchy to something more ambient — still significant, but the reading of something that was contained and directed rather than operational.

Powerful, the totem said. Not currently the problem.

Rango filed that distinction carefully.

The cellar level had rooms off a central corridor — doors closed, the specific quiet of a place that was organized rather than abandoned. Whatever was behind those doors was Dracula's business rather than Rango's, and Rango had enough business of his own to leave other people's alone.

Dracula stopped and turned.

The lamp light caught his face from below, which produced the specific dramatic quality that had made the vampire aesthetic a cinematic staple — but the expression it was illuminating was not the cinematic one. It was the expression of a parent who had been thinking about something during the walk and had arrived at his position.

"You were hiding under my daughter's bed," Dracula said. Not accusatory. Factual.

"Yes," Rango said.

"Because you were going to leave through the window."

"Yes."

"Because you assessed the hotel's supernatural concentration and concluded that an unannounced departure was preferable to an introduction on unknown terms."

Rango looked at him.

"You read the situation correctly," Dracula said. "I appreciate that. Most humans who arrive on this island either don't assess at all or assess incorrectly." He looked at the totem — the specific look he'd been directing at it since the bedroom, patient and unhurried. "You assessed correctly and then chose concealment over confrontation. That's — a reasonable choice, given the variables."

"I was also going to come back," Rango said. "After I found my companion."

"The historian," Dracula said. "In Lilliput."

"Yes."

"I'll send a message to the Lilliputian King in the morning," Dracula said. "Edward will resist the request, as Edward resists all requests that originate from outside his direct command structure, but the King is reasonable. Your friend will be returned." He looked at Rango. "In the meantime, you are guests. Mavis invited you. I don't override Mavis's invitations."

He said it with the specific expression of someone who has tried overriding Mavis's invitations and has concluded that the cost-benefit analysis doesn't support continuation of that practice.

"Thank you," Rango said.

"Don't thank me," Dracula said. "Make sure the party goes well. She's been planning it for six months."

The guest rooms in Hotel Transylvania had the specific quality of rooms that had been designed for the comfort of dark creatures, which overlapped with human comfort requirements in most respects and diverged from them in specific ways that Rango noted and decided not to address.

The bed was excellent. The window looked out on a courtyard that was entirely reasonable at this hour and presumably more interesting when the hotel's full guest list was present. The lamp on the side table burned something that wasn't ordinary wax but produced ordinary warm light.

He sat on the bed with his grandfather's envelope.

Ted was on the windowsill, looking at the courtyard below with the quiet attention of someone running a nighttime assessment of an unfamiliar location.

Toothless had taken the floor beside the bed with the settled patience of something that was exactly where it intended to be.

Rango turned the envelope over.

His name on the front, in his grandfather's handwriting — which he knew from the letters in the boxes in the storage unit in Queens that he hadn't opened until six months ago, which meant he recognized it as his grandfather's handwriting the way you recognize something you've been in contact with and hadn't consciously catalogued until you needed it.

Rango.

Specific. His name. Not Winchester. Not to whomever arrives. His name, which Anderson had written forty years ago and left with a four-hundred-year-old vampire with the confidence that it would eventually find the right person.

He opened it.

The letter was three pages. His grandfather's handwriting covered the lines with the density of someone who had a specific amount of information to convey and had calculated the space required accurately.

He read it.

He read it again.

Ted, from the windowsill, said nothing. The specific nothing of someone who understood that this was a reading moment rather than a talking moment and was respecting that.

When Rango put the letter down, he sat with it for a while.

Outside, the island was quiet in its particular way — the deep, layered quiet of somewhere that had been here for a very long time and had developed its own relationship with silence.

"He knew," Rango said, finally.

"What did he know?" Ted said.

"Most of it," Rango said. "The cage. Los Angeles. Azazel." He looked at the letter. "He didn't know the details — he couldn't have, forty years ago — but he knew the shape of it. He knew what direction things were moving and what the eventual pressure points would be." He paused. "He left instructions."

"What kind of instructions?"

"The island kind," Rango said. "Specific to here. What to look for. What to avoid. What the Dark Forest is." He looked at the window. "And something else."

Ted waited.

"He knew about Toothless," Rango said. "Not Toothless specifically — but the Night Fury. He encountered one here, forty years ago. He wrote about the bond — how it works, what it means, what the Night Fury is actually for on this island." He looked at the dragon on the floor, who was watching him with those green-gold eyes that communicated more than eyes were supposed to. "They're not just scouts, Ted."

"What are they?"

"Keys," Rango said. "The Night Furies are part of the island's mechanism. They can go places on this island that nothing else can access. They can open things that have been closed." He looked at the letter. "My grandfather came here forty years ago because of something he needed to find. He found it because of the Night Fury that bonded with him." He paused. "And then the Night Fury came back. When my grandfather left — the Night Fury stayed. Because the Night Fury belongs to the island."

Ted was very quiet.

"Until now," Ted said.

"Until now," Rango confirmed. "Until the system summoned one and it bonded with me and we came through the storm." He looked at Toothless. "He's been waiting. Not for me specifically — for whoever came through with him. The island was waiting to continue something my grandfather started."

Toothless made the sound.

Not the happy sound or the alert sound. A sound Rango hadn't heard before — lower, more resonant, the specific frequency of something communicating something it had been waiting to communicate for a long time.

"What did your grandfather start?" Ted said.

Rango looked at the letter.

"He found something in the Dark Forest," Rango said. "Something connected to the Cabin's Titans. To the cage. To the whole architecture." He folded the letter carefully and put it in his pocket. "He couldn't finish it. He had to leave — Los Angeles, probably, given the timeline." He looked at the window. "He left the Night Fury here. Left the letter with Dracula. Left a message that said: when the next Winchester comes through, give them this. They'll know what to do with it."

"Do you?" Ted said. "Know what to do with it?"

Rango looked at Toothless.

At the island outside the window.

At the Dark Forest visible in the distance — dark in a way that was not lack-of-light dark, the specific darkness of somewhere that had made a decision about what it admitted.

"I'm starting to," he said.

In the morning, Mavis found him at the window.

She appeared in the doorway with the specific energy of someone who had been awake for a while and had a project — in one hand, a set of small pots and brushes that communicated cosmetic intention; in the other, what appeared to be a reference book that she'd bookmarked extensively.

"The party is tonight," she said. "Everyone comes. And they're going to think you're human."

"I am human," Rango said.

"That's the problem," she said, pleasantly. "Most of the guests haven't had positive experiences with humans. If you walk in looking like yourself, there will be—" she searched for the word — "a situation."

"A situation," Rango said.

"Screaming, mostly," she said. "Some of the smaller guests are easily startled. And then the not-small guests respond to the startled smaller guests, and then it escalates." She held up the reference book. "So I've been researching."

The reference book was, Rango saw when she brought it closer, a compilation of monster aesthetics from approximately forty different documented supernatural categories, with bookmarks in sections she'd apparently found relevant.

"You want to do my makeup," he said.

"I want to do everyone's makeup," she said, with the enthusiasm of someone who had identified a project she was genuinely invested in. "Ted is easy — I have some ideas for him already. Toothless is fine as he is, everyone loves a Night Fury." She looked at Rango. "You are the challenge."

"What category are you going for?" he said.

She showed him a page.

He looked at it.

"Blue," he said.

"It reads as a specific type of sea entity," she said, with the earnest authority of someone who had done the research. "Nobody bothers sea entities. They're considered neutral."

"I'll look like a Smurf," he said.

"You'll look like a respectful guest," she said. "The alternative is screaming."

He sat down.

While Mavis worked — with the focused, careful attention of someone who took what she was doing seriously and had the skill to back the investment up — she talked.

Not nervously. With the specific ease of someone who had been in a castle with a limited conversational pool for a long time and had a lot of accumulated things to say to someone new.

"The island," she said, adding a layer with a thin brush. "Has your father told you — has anyone explained how it works to you?"

"Some," Rango said. "Three areas. Land of Giants, Lilliput, the hotel's territory. Dark Forest in the middle."

"That's the basic geography," she said. "But the island is older than the geography. The geography is just—" she searched — "how things organized themselves. The island underneath is something else." She added another layer. "Daddy says the island exists because something needs to exist here. That the something required a location and the location required everything else to grow around it." She paused. "He doesn't say what the something is. He says it's in the Dark Forest and it's been there since before he arrived, and he arrived four hundred years ago and it was already old."

"Has anyone been into the Dark Forest?" Rango said.

"Daddy. Once." She said it with the specific weight of something that had been told to her as a significant fact and had remained significant. "He says he went to the edge of what's at the center and then came back because he understood that going further required — something he didn't have." She looked at him. "He says a human came, forty years ago, and went further than he did. He says the human had a Night Fury."

She looked at Toothless, who was watching the makeup process from the doorway with interested attention.

"Your Night Fury," she said.

"My grandfather's Night Fury," Rango said. "Before me."

Mavis processed this. "Then the Night Fury waited," she said. "For forty years. For you."

"For whoever came next," Rango said. "I think the distinction matters to him."

Toothless made a sound that Rango had learned to read as something between that's accurate and the distinction matters less than you think.

Mavis smiled at the dragon with the warm, unselfconscious affection she'd had for him since the worm pie.

"Can I tell you something?" she said, to Rango.

"Yes," he said.

"I've been in this castle for a hundred and eighteen years," she said. Not sad — factual, the way you state a fact you've been living with. "I've been to the grounds, to the beach, to the courtyard. I've watched the island from every window in the hotel." She kept working. "Daddy says the outside world is dangerous. He says humans are dangerous. He says the island is safer." She paused. "I used to believe him. I've been — believing him for a hundred and eighteen years."

"And now?" Rango said.

"And now," she said, "a human arrived through the storm that isn't supposed to let humans through, with a Night Fury that's been on this island for forty years, carrying something in his palm that Daddy won't tell me about but which makes him look at you the way he looks at things that are important." She stepped back and assessed her work. "I'm starting to wonder whether safer is the right thing to be optimizing for."

She said it with the specific careful tone of someone who has arrived at a conclusion that contradicts something they've been told for a very long time and is still working out how to hold both things.

Rango looked at her.

At the girl who was a hundred and eighteen years old and looked eighteen and had been in this castle for all of it and had been told the world outside was too dangerous and had built a life inside those constraints with genuine grace and warmth and had also, clearly, been feeling those constraints for a very long time.

He thought about the Director, shouting into an empty beach.

About his parents, who had made a decision about what was worth doing and had done it at a cost they'd apparently known they might pay.

About Dean and Sam, on the road because staying comfortable in one place wasn't the work.

He thought about what he'd said to the Director in the museum office.

No. I wouldn't stay home.

"There's a kind of creature," he said, "that I've read about in accounts that go back as far as your father's documentation. Documented on this island specifically, in the oldest records anyone has." He nodded at Toothless. "The accounts describe them as scouts. Something that goes ahead of what follows."

Mavis looked at Toothless.

"What follows?" she said.

"Someone coming to finish something that was started forty years ago," Rango said. "Someone who needed to see the island for themselves to understand what finishing it requires." He held her gaze. "Someone who's been waiting for permission to actually be where they are."

Mavis was quiet for a moment.

"Are you talking about yourself?" she said.

"I'm also talking about you," he said.

She looked at him.

At Toothless.

At the window and the island beyond it — the beach, the forest, the Dark Forest in the distance, the whole geography of a place she'd been watching from windows for a hundred and eighteen years.

"Daddy won't like it," she said.

"Dracula will adapt," Rango said. "He loves you. He'll argue about it and then he'll adapt, because that's what people who love their children do when their children are ready to be somewhere larger."

She was quiet for another moment.

Then she turned back to the makeup.

"Hold still," she said. "I'm not finished."

He held still.

"After the party," she said, carefully, and the words had the specific weight of a decision being made rather than a desire being expressed. "After the party — will you take me to see the Dark Forest?"

Rango thought about the letter. About what his grandfather had written about the Dark Forest. About what it contained and what it required and what the Night Fury was the key to.

He thought about the island choosing who came through.

He thought about a hundred and eighteen years in a castle on an island in the middle of the storm that kept everything out, and what it meant that Mavis had spent those years maintaining her warmth and her curiosity rather than letting those things calcify.

"Yes," he said.

Mavis nodded once.

Kept working.

The blue was, he had to admit when she handed him the mirror eventually, quite good. He didn't look like a Smurf. He looked like something that belonged on an island that operated by different rules than the ordinary world.

He looked like he'd arrived.

"Well?" she said.

"Good work," he said.

She beamed.

From the doorway, Ted looked at the blue makeup and at Rango's face and at the specific expression of a man who has committed to a plan and is seeing one of its side effects for the first time.

"Back in Ghana," Ted said, "warriors painted their faces before important things."

"Is that relevant here?" Rango said.

"It might be," Ted said. "The color was usually red."

"Blue is what we have," Rango said.

"Blue works," Ted said, with the specific decisiveness of someone closing a discussion.

Toothless padded over, looked at Rango's blue face, and made a sound that communicated no judgment whatsoever and complete acceptance, which was the Night Fury's characteristic approach to most things.

"Okay," Rango said. "Let's go find the Curator. Before the party starts and I have to explain the blue face to Indiana Jones."

"Jones will appreciate it scientifically," Ted said.

"Jones will take a photo of it for the documentation," Rango said. "And then the Director will see the photo and he will have feelings about it."

"The Director," Ted said, "is currently in Lilliput."

"Which is why," Rango said, "we need to get him out before tonight."

He stood up.

Looked at the island through the window.

At the Dark Forest in the distance, dark in the way of something that had been keeping a secret for a very long time and was ready to stop.

At Toothless, who was looking at the same direction with the patient certainty of something that knew where it needed to go and had been waiting for the right moment to go there.

"After the party," Rango said, to Toothless.

Toothless made the sound.

They understood each other.
