Chapter 95: Hotel Transylvania
The Curator was being dragged toward a medieval city by hundreds of finger-sized horses.
Rango was being carried home by a girl with black hair and Gothic makeup who had the specific gentle efficiency of someone who had done this before and found it unremarkable.
These were different experiences of the same island, and the difference was significant.
He came back to consciousness in stages, which was becoming a pattern he didn't love but had learned to navigate.
Stage one: he was moving. Being carried, specifically, with the specific motion of someone walking at a normal pace with a load they'd decided wasn't going to slow them down.
Stage two: Toothless was nearby. The Night Fury's specific warmth and weight were present — resized to his compact form, apparently, and also being carried, which Toothless was accepting with the slightly embarrassed dignity of something that could fly and was currently not flying.
Stage three: Ted was somewhere in the arrangement, which Rango confirmed by hearing Ted say, in the approximately-awake register: "This is fine. This is a fine situation."
Stage four: the girl carrying them was — he opened his eyes and confirmed this — approximately eighteen, with black hair cut short and straight, wearing a dress that communicated Gothic aesthetic with the specific sincerity of someone who had grown up in that aesthetic rather than chosen it as a statement. Her makeup was dark. Her expression was focused, kind, and entirely unbothered by the logistical challenge of carrying a large man, a compact Night Fury, and a small bear.
She was carrying all three of them.
Without apparent effort.
Which told Rango something.
He filed it.
"Hey," he said.
She looked at him with the warm, unselfconscious smile of someone genuinely pleased that the person they'd been carrying had regained consciousness.
"You're awake," she said. "Good. We're almost there."
"Where's there?" he said.
She nodded at something ahead.
He turned his head.
The castle was the specific kind of castle that existed in the specific part of the imagination that produced Gothic architecture and had never fully left it — stone, towers, the accumulated aesthetic of something that had been built to last and had been lasting for long enough that the lasting had become its primary characteristic. At its entrance, a sign.
Hotel Transylvania.
Rango read it.
Read it again.
Processed the specific combination of those two words in that specific sequence.
"Right," he said, to himself.
"Almost there," the girl said again, helpfully.
The kitchen of Hotel Transylvania had the specific quality of a kitchen that had been cooking for a very long time for guests with very specific dietary requirements — certain ingredients that didn't appear in standard culinary traditions, certain preparation methods that suggested the clientele had preferences that differed from the general population.
The girl — her name was Mavis, she'd told him when she set them down, with the easy directness of someone who considered introductions straightforward — had made a pie.
The pie looked like a pie. It had a crust. It had been baked. It was the size of a pizza and it smelled, genuinely, like something that had been made with care.
The filling moved.
The worms in the filling were the specific variety that Rango didn't have a name for and that existed, apparently, in the culinary tradition of Hotel Transylvania's kitchen as a feature rather than a problem.
Mavis was watching him with the bright, earnest expectation of someone who had cooked for the first time for someone other than her father and was hoping for a positive response.
Ted was on the windowsill looking at the courtyard.
Toothless solved the problem.
The Night Fury's head came around the edge of the table with the focused attention of something that had identified food and had made a decision about it, and the pie disappeared in a single committed motion that left Toothless blinking with the specific expression of something that had been pleasantly surprised by a flavor it had not anticipated.
He pressed his head against Mavis's arm.
She laughed — the specific laugh of someone who had been hoping their cooking would go over well and had received enthusiastic confirmation from an unexpected direction.
"He liked it," she said.
"He clearly liked it," Rango confirmed.
"I'll make more," Mavis said, and lifted her skirt and went out of the kitchen with the purposeful energy of someone who had identified a project and was committing to it.
The moment she was gone, Rango was at the window.
He looked at the courtyard. At the castle's perimeter. At the specific quality of the night — which was, he registered, genuinely dark in a way that night on an island in the South Pacific shouldn't be, darker than the moon and stars accounted for, the specific darkness of somewhere that operated on different light rules than the outside world.
The totem was hot.
Not the ambient warmth of Victor on the plane — the specific, sustained heat of a significant concentration of supernatural entities in close proximity. The kind of reading it gave in the immediate aftermath of a major engagement, except there was no engagement. There was just — the castle. And whatever was in it.
The last time the totem had run this hot had been in the Addams family driveway, and that had been one family.
This was — he ran the reading — considerably more than one family.
"The Adams family energy," Ted said, from the windowsill, "but amplified."
"Significantly amplified," Rango confirmed.
"This is a hotel," Ted said. "For dark creatures. On an island that preexists the current supernatural order." He looked at Rango. "I want to note that I am not surprised by this. I am noting it."
"Noted," Rango said.
He went back to the window. Looked at the exit routes — the courtyard gate, the main entrance, the window he was standing at.
"The Curator is somewhere on this island," he said. "We don't know where. We don't know his condition. Finding him is the first priority."
"Agreed," Ted said.
"Mavis is a good person," Rango said. "She found us, she carried us, she cooked — she cooked something." He looked at the window. "But this hotel has dark creatures in it, and dark creatures on an island that preexists the current supernatural order, at an unknown concentration, is a variable I'd rather assess from the outside than the inside."
"Also agreed," Ted said.
Toothless, who had been sitting with his eyes at half-mast in the specific post-meal contentment of something that had eaten very well, opened one eye.
Looked at Rango.
Made the sound — not the happy sound, the alert sound, the one that communicated I am paying attention and you should be too.
"I know," Rango said. "Window. Now. Before she comes back."
He straddled Toothless's back — the Night Fury had resized slightly in the kitchen's interior space, not to full flight size but to the size that made riding practical — and looked at Ted.
Ted hadn't moved from the windowsill.
"Ted," Rango said.
Ted looked at him with the specific expression he wore when he had a point to make and was deciding whether the moment required it.
"She carried us," Ted said. "She fed us. She found us on a beach where we would have been — let's be honest about this — in a genuinely difficult situation without her intervention." He looked at his hands. "And now we're going to leave through the window without saying anything."
"We're going to come back," Rango said.
"After," Ted said.
"After we find the Curator," Rango said. "Which is the immediate priority."
"I know it's the immediate priority," Ted said. "I'm noting the optics of the departure method."
"The departure method is the window," Rango said. "Because her father is apparently on his way and apparently hates humans, and I'd like to have this conversation on my own terms rather than whatever terms a vampire who hates humans sets."
Ted processed this.
"That's a reasonable point," Ted said.
"Get on," Rango said.
Ted got on.
Rango had one leg over the windowsill when the castle door opened below them.
Not the front entrance — the side door, the specific entrance of someone who lived in the building and used the functional rather than ceremonial access point. The figure who came through it was — Rango read the silhouette, the posture, the specific quality of movement that the Dragon Heart aura made legible in the dark — old. Very old. The kind of old that wasn't age in the ordinary sense but duration in the supernatural one.
He looked up.
His eyes found the window.
Found Rango with one leg on the sill and Toothless under him and Ted on his shoulder.
The eyes were the specific red that the Dracula (1992, Coppola) version had gotten exactly right — not theatrical, not glowing, the specific biological fact of something that saw in spectra humans didn't and had eyes that reflected that.
This was Count Dracula.
Not a vampire elder. Not a two-hundred-year-old operative like Victor on the plane.
The original.
The totem in Rango's palm went from hot to the specific temperature of something that had just encountered a data point it hadn't had a category for.
"Hm," Rango said, to himself.
A moment later — a specific, charged moment in which neither of them moved and the night was very quiet — Mavis came back through the kitchen door with a second pie and found the window occupied.
She looked at Rango.
At Toothless.
At Ted.
At her father in the courtyard below.
"Warming up," Ted said, immediately.
"Stretching," Rango said, one beat behind. "The sea travel tightens everything up, you know how it is—"
Mavis grabbed his arm — with the specific grip of someone whose physical capability was not what the Gothic teenager aesthetic suggested — and pulled him back from the window with a urgency that was entirely genuine.
"My father," she said, in a low, fast voice. "He's coming in. You need to be under the bed. Right now. He hates humans. He has — strong feelings about humans. Please—"
"How strong," Rango said.
"Strong," Mavis said. "Under the bed. Now."
Toothless, apparently having assessed the situation and concluded that the bed option was tactically preferable to the window option given the variable now present in the courtyard, was already moving toward the bed.
The space under the bed accommodated a small bear and most of a Night Fury. The remaining portion of the Night Fury that didn't fit was addressed by Mavis, who applied herself to the problem with the determined focus of someone solving an engineering challenge under time pressure.
Toothless's rear section disappeared under the valance approximately four seconds before the bedroom door opened.
Count Dracula was tall in the way that people who had been tall for a very long time were tall — not the height of youth, the height of something that had settled into its dimensions and found them entirely appropriate. The cape was not theatrical. It was the functional garment of something that had been wearing capes since capes were the correct garment for the weather and had seen no reason to update.
His face, when it found Mavis's slightly-too-bright smile by the side of the bed, changed completely.
The cold authority of something very old that owned this building and everything in it became — paternal. Immediately, completely, with the specific warmth of someone whose child is the one thing that operates outside the hierarchy of everything else.
"My little bat," Dracula said. "Still awake?"
"Nightmare," Mavis said, with the specific unconvincing delivery of someone who is normally a good liar and is currently distracted.
"A nightmare." Dracula's expression hardened. "Dream entities. I'll have them cleared from the island by morning—"
"No no no, it was just a regular nightmare, the — the kind everyone has, you don't need to—"
Dracula was already in the room, because Dracula moved the way What We Do in the Shadows (2014) understood vampires moved — not dramatically, not with announcement, just present somewhere they hadn't been a moment before and not requiring explanation.
He sniffed.
The specific, slow, thorough sniff of something with olfactory capability that operated in ranges humans didn't.
His eyes went to the bed valance.
"There is," he said carefully, "a smell."
"Candle," Mavis said. "I was burning a new candle. It has a strange—"
"The candle smells like a human," Dracula said.
"It's a very realistic candle," Mavis said.
The bed valance lifted.
Under it: Rango, in the specific posture of someone who has committed to a hiding place and is maintaining commitment to it despite the hiding place having been definitively located. Ted, with the complete stillness of something that had decided its best move was to be as inanimate as possible. Toothless, looking up at Count Dracula with the bright, interested attention of a Night Fury who had been in stranger situations and was curious about where this one went.
The moment held.
Rango looked at Dracula.
Dracula looked at Rango.
"So," Rango said.
"So," Dracula said.
"This is a misunderstanding," Rango said.
"It appears," Dracula said, "to be several misunderstandings, combined."
They moved to the dining room because Dracula, whatever his feelings about the situation, had specific standards about where conversations were conducted, and under a bed was not on the list.
The dining room of Hotel Transylvania was the dining room of a place that had been hosting guests since before the concept of hospitality had been formalized — long table, high-backed chairs, the specific atmosphere of somewhere that had seen significant things and had learned to look appropriate regardless of what was happening at the table.
Dracula sat at the head.
Rango sat at the far end, which was where Dracula had gestured, which was the positioning of someone being evaluated rather than welcomed, which Rango accepted as the accurate description of the situation.
Ted was on the table. Toothless was beside Rango's chair, watching the room with the alert curiosity of a Night Fury encountering something it found genuinely interesting.
Dracula looked at Toothless for a long moment.
"Night Fury," he said.
"Yes," Rango said.
"I haven't seen one since—" Dracula paused. "A very long time." He looked at Rango. "They don't bond with humans. They haven't, in any account I've encountered, in four hundred years of documentation."
"He bonded with me," Rango said.
"Clearly," Dracula said. "That's what concerns me." He folded his hands. "You arrived through the storm. You weren't supposed to. The storm is the island's primary defense. It doesn't permit passage to people who haven't been — selected."
"Selected," Rango said.
"The island chooses who comes through," Dracula said. "It has always done so. The storm passes those it permits and processes those it doesn't." He looked at Rango with the flat assessment of something that had been evaluating people for four hundred years and had gotten very good at it. "It permitted you."
"And my companions," Rango said. "There were five of us on the yacht."
"Five arrived," Dracula confirmed. "Dispersed across the island. The storm does that — it places people where the island needs them rather than where they intend to go." He paused. "Your companions are on the island. My people are monitoring. They are — so far — managing their respective situations."
Rango thought about the Director.
About the specific situations the Director might be managing.
"One of them," he said. "Older man. Historian. He's been looking forward to this island his entire professional life."
Something moved in Dracula's expression — not quite amusement, something more knowing than amusement.
"The Lilliputian beach," Dracula said.
Rango closed his eyes briefly.
"General Edward found him," Dracula said. "Edward finds everyone on that beach. It's his beach. He considers it a personal achievement each time." He paused. "Your friend is currently being transported to Lilliput City. He's unharmed. Edward is — enthusiastic, but not cruel."
"Can we get him back?"
"Eventually," Dracula said. "The Lilliputian King is not unreasonable. He will require a demonstration of good faith and possibly a formal acknowledgment that the giant is not a spy. Edward will resist this." He said it with the specific tone of someone who had been managing Edward's enthusiasm for a very long time. "It's a process."
Mavis, who had been standing in the doorway since the dining room conversation started, said: "Daddy. Can they stay for the party?"
Dracula looked at his daughter.
At Rango.
At the Night Fury sitting beside a human it had bonded with, which hadn't happened in four hundred years of his documentation.
At the totem on Rango's palm, which Dracula had been looking at since the bedroom — not obviously, with the peripheral attention of something that recognized something it didn't have a category for and was maintaining its notation.
"The party," Rango said. "What's the party?"
"My birthday," Mavis said. "Every dark creature on the island comes. It's — everyone's here."
Rango thought about Victor, who was also on this island with an agenda that wasn't Jules Verne appreciation.
About Jones's contact — the father, who knew people were coming, who would know Rango was here.
About the thing large and patient in the island's interior that had registered their arrival.
About a Night Fury who had returned rather than arrived, who had been documented on this island in accounts older than Dracula's four hundred years.
About the island choosing who came through.
The journey has already chosen you. And it knew, when it chose, exactly who you were.
"The party," Rango said. "Everyone's there."
"Every dark creature on the island," Mavis confirmed.
Including, Rango thought, whoever had been here long enough to have a daughter who had never known anything else. Including whatever was in the interior that was large and aware and patient. Including whatever Victor was here for.
He looked at Dracula.
"We'll stay for the party," he said.
Dracula looked at him with the expression of a very old, very powerful vampire encountering a human who had arrived through a storm that wasn't supposed to let people through, who had bonded with a Night Fury, who was carrying something in his palm that four hundred years hadn't given him a name for, and who had just agreed to attend his daughter's birthday party.
"You will," Dracula said, "behave."
"I will try," Rango said, which was the honest answer.
Dracula looked at him.
"Your surname," Dracula said. "Winchester."
Rango held his gaze.
"I knew an Anderson Winchester," Dracula said. "Once. Briefly." He turned his wine glass. "He also arrived through the storm. Also bonded with something the island had documentation on." He paused. "He stayed for considerably longer than a party."
The dining room was very quiet.
"What happened to him?" Rango said.
"He left," Dracula said. "Eventually. With what he came for." He looked at the totem. "He gave me something before he left. A piece of information I've been holding for—" he calculated — "approximately forty years." He looked at Rango. "He told me a Winchester would come back. He said when one did, give them this."
He reached into his jacket.
Produced an envelope.
Set it on the table between them.
Rango looked at it.
At Dracula.
"My grandfather," Rango said.
"Yes," Dracula said.
Mavis looked at the envelope. At her father. At Rango. "Did you know his grandfather was coming, Daddy?"
"No," Dracula said. "I knew a Winchester was coming. Anderson was specific about the coming. He wasn't specific about the timing." He looked at Rango. "Forty years. I was beginning to wonder."
Ted, on the table, looked at the envelope.
Looked at Rango.
"Back in Ghana," Ted said, "when someone left a message for you with someone else, to be delivered when the time was right—" he paused — "that was either very good news or very specific instructions."
"Which was it usually?" Mavis asked.
Ted thought about it.
"Depended entirely," he said, "on what needed doing."
Rango picked up the envelope.
His grandfather's handwriting on the front.
His name.
Rango.
Not Winchester. Not to whomever. His name, specifically, which meant Anderson had known — forty years ago, when he'd sat in this dining room and left this envelope with a four-hundred-year-old vampire — specifically who was coming.
He turned it over.
Looked at Dracula.
"The party," he said. "When is it?"
"Tomorrow night," Dracula said.
"Then I'll read this tonight," Rango said, "and we can talk tomorrow about what it means."
Dracula nodded once — the nod of something that had been waiting for this conversation for four decades and had learned to wait.
"Guest rooms," he said, to Mavis. "Make sure they're comfortable. The Winchester and his—" he looked at Ted, at Toothless — "companions."
"Yes!" Mavis said, with the specific energy of someone who has gotten exactly what they wanted and is too pleased to moderate the expression of it.
She looked at Rango with the warm, unselfconscious smile of someone who had found someone interesting and was glad they were staying.
"You're going to love the party," she said. "Everyone comes. It's the best night of the year."
Rango looked at the envelope in his hand.
At the dining room of Hotel Transylvania.
At Dracula, four hundred years old, watching him with the patient attention of something that had been holding a message for forty years and had just delivered it.
At Toothless, who was sitting on the floor beside his chair with the calm certainty of something that knew where it was and why.
"I believe you," Rango said.
