Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16

CHAPTER 16, THE RACE AGAINST DARKNESS

The night had deepened into something far heavier than darkness.

When Jay and Elara stepped out of the cave, the air itself felt different—as if the world had quietly shifted in their absence. The cold wind brushed past them, but it no longer felt natural. It carried something unseen… something watching.

Jay held the unconscious girl carefully in his arms. She looked fragile, almost peaceful, as if she were simply asleep. But the faint black veins crawling beneath her skin told a completely different story.

She wasn't just a victim anymore.

She was becoming something else.

Elara walked beside him, her staff glowing faintly to light their path. Her eyes moved constantly—left, right, behind—never resting for more than a second.

"We need to move faster," she said quietly.

Jay didn't look at her, but he nodded.

"They know."

Elara didn't ask who.

She already understood.

Whatever that fragment was…

it was aware now.

And worse—

it was connected.

They moved away from the cave and deeper toward the rising terrain that led to the Ashen Mountains. The forest began to thin, the tall trees giving way to jagged rocks and uneven ground.

The silence followed them.

But now—

it wasn't empty.

It felt… alive.

After some time, Elara spoke again.

"We can't keep carrying her like this forever."

Jay glanced down briefly at the girl.

Her breathing was steady.

Too steady.

As if something inside her was controlling even that.

"We'll stop when it's safe."

Elara let out a quiet breath.

"And where exactly is 'safe' now?"

Jay didn't answer.

Because there was no answer.

Not anymore.

They kept moving.

The ground turned rougher, the forest almost completely gone now. Only a few twisted, lifeless trees remained, standing like broken remnants of something long forgotten.

They were entering the outer edges of the Ashen region.

Then—

Jay stopped.

Not suddenly.

But sharply.

This time, Elara felt it too.

Her body tensed instantly.

"…Something's coming."

Jay slowly lowered the girl, placing her carefully against a large stone.

"Stay behind me."

Elara stepped back, raising her staff.

The air grew heavier.

The silence broke.

And then—

they appeared.

Figures stepped out from the shadows.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

More than before.

Each dressed in dark clothing.

Each holding a weapon.

But unlike the assassin they had encountered earlier—

these ones did not hide.

Their presence was overwhelming.

Cold.

Sharp.

Killing intent filled the air.

One of them stepped forward.

His face was partially covered, but his eyes were clear—

focused.

Dangerous.

"You've caused unnecessary complications," he said calmly.

Jay didn't respond.

The man's gaze shifted briefly toward the girl.

"Hand her over."

Elara stepped slightly forward.

"And if we refuse?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Then we take her."

Silence.

Jay stepped forward.

"Try."

That was enough.

The man raised his hand.

And instantly—

they attacked.

All at once.

Fast.

Precise.

Deadly.

Elara reacted first.

"Arcane Barrier!"

A wide blue shield formed in front of them, glowing brightly in the darkness.

But the attackers didn't stop.

They split into groups.

Some attacked the barrier head-on.

Others moved around—

flanking.

Jay vanished.

FLASH!

He appeared behind one of them.

His blade struck instantly.

The man dropped.

Before the others could react—

Jay was gone again.

Reappearing to the left.

Another strike.

Another body fell.

But these enemies—

were different.

They reacted.

They adapted.

One of them blocked Jay's next attack.

Another attempted to counter.

Jay stepped back slightly.

Analyzing.

"They're trained…"

Elara shouted from behind,

"These aren't ordinary fighters!"

Jay already knew.

These were organized.

Coordinated.

Not random enemies.

The leader stepped forward again.

"You're skilled," he said.

Jay didn't reply.

"But skill alone…"

The man raised his hand slightly—

"…won't save you."

Something changed.

The attackers' movements became faster.

Sharper.

More synchronized.

Elara's barrier cracked.

"…They're getting stronger!"

Jay's eyes narrowed.

"No."

"They're being enhanced."

The leader smiled.

"Good."

Jay made his decision instantly.

He vanished—

and reappeared directly in front of the leader.

Their eyes met.

Jay attacked.

Fast.

Clean.

But—

CLANG!

Blocked.

The leader stepped back smoothly.

"Too direct."

Jay didn't stop.

He attacked again.

And again.

Faster.

More precise.

But the leader matched him.

Every movement.

Every strike.

Elara watched, stunned.

"He's keeping up with him…"

This wasn't a normal fight anymore.

This was skill versus skill.

Control versus control.

The leader spoke mid-combat,

"You're not ordinary."

Jay answered,

"Neither are you."

The leader smiled faintly.

"Good."

Then—

he disappeared.

Not moved.

Vanished.

Jay's eyes sharpened.

"…Same technique."

The air shifted behind him.

Jay didn't turn—

he teleported.

The blade missed him by inches.

He reappeared behind the leader—

attacking instantly.

Blocked again.

The leader turned smoothly.

"…Interesting."

Jay's expression remained calm.

Then—

he activated it.

Hiddenness.

His presence vanished completely.

The battlefield froze.

The attackers hesitated.

They couldn't feel him.

Couldn't track him.

Even the leader's expression changed.

"…Where did he—"

Too late.

Jay reappeared.

Right in front of him.

Closer than before.

Faster than before.

His blade moved—

precise.

Unavoidable.

SLASH!

The leader staggered back.

Blood spilled.

For the first time—

he was hit.

The other attackers froze.

Elara took the opportunity.

"Arcane Burst!"

A wave of magic exploded outward, knocking several enemies back.

Jay stepped forward.

"It's over."

The leader looked at him.

And smiled.

"…Not yet."

Then—

his body changed.

Dark veins spread across his skin.

Just like the girl.

Just like the beasts.

Jay's eyes narrowed.

"…Another fragment."

The leader's voice distorted.

"…We are many…"

"…You cannot stop us all…"

Jay stepped forward.

"Watch me."

He vanished—

and reappeared instantly.

His blade moved—

clean.

Precise.

Final.

The leader froze.

Then collapsed.

Silence fell.

The remaining attackers hesitated—

then retreated.

Disappearing into the darkness.

The battlefield went still.

Only the cold wind remained.

Elara lowered her staff slowly.

"This is getting worse…"

Jay didn't respond.

He walked back to the girl.

She was still unconscious.

But the black veins—

had spread further.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

Jay looked at her.

His expression calm—

but serious.

"…We're running out of time."

Elara stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

Jay didn't look away.

"If we don't reach the source soon…"

He paused.

Then finished,

"…she won't survive."

Elara's expression hardened.

"…Then we don't slow down."

Jay nodded.

He lifted the girl again.

And without another word—

they continued toward the Ashen Mountains.

But now—

this was no longer just a journey.

It was a race.

Against time.

Against darkness.

And against something that was no longer just awakening—

but preparing to rise.
